Hey we almost had a president impeeched because somebody ate his sausage.

2003-03-14 03:12:41 PM
To get to the real meat of the matter DownSouth, he was roasted because he lied under oath about someone swallowing his hot dog, not just for the actual salami submersion.

I'm pretty sure that was what most of the beef was about.

Of course, many others were shocked that he chose such a cow, and others just had some political steak in the matter.

Assuming there were democratic elections in Muslim nations, you could accuse your opponent of shaving or wearing a t-shirt and it would cause quite a ruckus.

I was once pulled over by a cop for causing a ruckus. I wonder if that's related.

Aquafortis Probably a combination of pre-Indo-European cow worship, as suggested by the cow symbols found in Mohenjo-Daro; add to that the Aryan love of cows (example: "daughter" comes from an ancestor word meaning "milkmaid") and you get cow worship. Same thing goes on in the USA except we have the good sense to eat them. After all, we feed megatons of grain to cattle in feedlots, and Americans 130 years ago tried to kill off all the buffalo, and then replaced them with cattle that can't live out here without constant TLC from struggling ranchers.

All in all the Indians could solve their hunger problems by eating the damn cows.

2003-03-14 07:26:04 PM
my guess on the origin, whithout doing any research whatsoever, which would be easy as pie, is that since they need their cattle for plowing fields, they get more out of using them for labor than eating them.

but then they are over-populated which would indicate lots of cheap labor, so that shoots that to hell...

ok, how about this; brahma is represented as a bull, so they respect that animal above all others...

oh, there is the whole reincarnation thing where you could be killing your unkle or something, but why just cows?

I. Give. Up.

Only briefly. The US uses like 3/4 of its agriculture for cattle food. If India decided to eat cattle, they would have to use up a large amount of the land devoted to growing food for human consumption. Since the cows are allowed to wander, they usually eat weeds and other things that humans wouldn't, so it doesn't impact human hunger. Plus cows that are alive produce some milk for consumption, as well as dung for fertilizing land and use as a fuel since there isn't much oil, wood, or coal in India.

I guess I did learn something in my anthropology class.

Cows, Pigs, Wars & Witches: The Riddles of Culture
Marvin Harris

Great book and he spends an entire chapter on the cow worship of India. His take on the matter is that there is a very good logical reason ancient hindu's chose the cow as their sacred animal. The milk the animal gives feeds children, the dung is fuel for their stoves.

The enviornmental conditions in that area make the long term benifits of living cows much more desirable than the short term benifits of eating them.

Great book.

Severian, thanks! I forgot which anthropologist it was that wrote about that.

Good question, RaoulDuke.

What's sacred in the US? Social Security.

If you want to slander a politician in the U.S., you start spreading rumors he wants to cut social security.

It's a death rumor. The old folks who are counting on that check to pay their green fees will make sure the candidate is buried.
