Man, the last time I went to a Shoneys was 1993 and I just remembered that it sucked then.

Just to complicate matters further, they should have Bigboy holding a confederate flag.

"Eating his lunch near the statue on Monday, resident Larry McNeely said it would 'sadden' him if Big Boy's pillar were to be stripped bare."

"Shoney's touched just about every Charlestonian's life in some positive way," she said. "I thought it would be sad to lose all the history that had been made there."

This is a bit over the top.
Touched lives? Did every single person work there to get off of drugs?
History? It was a Shoney's Big Boy. Then it wasn't.
This "icon" is a giant plastic chubby kid holding a burger.

Media grasping. Come on now

When did Shoney's start buying Big Boy franchises??

In my travels I've eaten at:
Top's Big Boy
Mark's Big Boy
Bob's Big Boy
Mike's Big Boy

its decent road food, but its still road food to me. hasn't been a Big Boy local here for 30+ years.

they do a decent breakfast too. When I'm at Gingerman Raceway I'll hit the one in South Haven.

Shoney's had the franchise East of the Mississippi until 1983 (about the time they got bust for discrimiation).

Bob's had it on the West Coast.

The others, I'm not sure.

For the uninitiated, a Big Boy is very similar to a Big Mac. In fact, I think McDonald's got sued when the Big Mac was rolled out.

I only ever knew about Big Boy once in my life, during the mid-70s on a family trip to North Carolina. There was some sort of parade going on, and one of the floats had a huge Big Boy figure on it, while someone on the float was throwing out cheap plastic Big Boy rings and possibly other little things. I snatched up a white one with red foil stamping. No idea why I remember this particular event, especially when it's about the only thing I even remember about that trip (I was about 4 or 5 at the time) but I don't think we ever ate there.

/I know, cool story, bro.

I remember eating a Big Boy here in Iowa when I was very young. I remember that it was vaguely depressing, in that 70s way- decaying vinyl and fake walnut interiors, and bad muzak.

Never been to a Shoney's, but I hear it's pretty depressing, too.

Well, they don't have Plymouth Rock or anything, they have to make their history out of what they've got.

i'll admit, there's definitely brand-confusion going on, because i never knew the two were different.

/i suspect it's more than just the mascot helping that impression

FTFA: Although Shoney's once ran restaurants under the Big Boy name, the company abandoned its franchise agreement with Big Boy - which once had had more than 1,000 locations across the country - in 1976 to expand its own brand.

As far as Big Boy International is concerned, that was the end of the mascot's association with Shoney's.

That might be true, but I worked as a busboy at a Shoney's in 1980, and we still had the Big Boy statue outside, and we were still known as Shoney's Big Boy, and we still had Big Boy branded products. In fact, that statue was still there when I moved out of the area in 1984.
