Oh great, I guess I'm just screwed all around then. Damn it science!

This is why I don't try to do anything in my life.

I don't know all of the rules to black jack, but I've never lost money at a casino.

Don't know jack about how the stock market works, but I'm making good money in it.

Don't know how women work, but I get to have sex with them.

I've been addicted to tea for the last year or so...started drinking it because of its antioxidant level. Now I'm going to have to quit tea and probably lose a limb to diabeetus in the process. Thanks, science.

I never believed this magical anti-cancer crap about anti-oxidants, I find it annoying that some things I like advertise their anti-oxidants :/

1) correlation != causation

2) fta: `The researchers show that low levels of ROS - and hydrogen peroxide in particular -- might actually protect us from diabetes, by improving our ability to respond to insulin signals.`

naughty subby.

Article actually says moderation is key basically.

If you're healthy, don't jam down as many anti-oxidant vitamins as you can, and if you're not healthy - than it's possible that you may need more anti-oxidants - but they don't know where the good/bad levels are.

2009-10-06 05:13:58 PM
uh...since scientists can't seem to cooperate, communicate or make up their minds over time.

Just eat sensibly,
and live everyday as if its your last.

Because no matter what you do, you're going to die.

This. Simplest medical advice you can get: get your RDA of all vitamins and minerals. Don't sweat the rest.

But if it's your last day who would want to have hot kinky sex with someone bloated, farty, and asking for Pepto?

Dr. Melik: [T]his morning for breakfast, uh, he requested something called wheat germ, organic honey, and tiger's milk.

Doctor: Oh yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life preserving properties.

Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak, or cream pies, or hot fudge?

Doctor: Those were thought to be unhealthy. Precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.

=================================================

That's the way it always is. Even with vitamins and anti-oxidants and other things that are 'good' for you... too much does do harm!

If you're already healthy and get your recommended vitamins through your foods, don't eat more! You have enough!

I assume the article is saying the same thing about anti-oxidants... they're good. But no need to shovel them down your throat.

Green tea has many different components. A quick Google scholar search indicates that in humans and in animal models, the net effect seems to be greater insulin sensitivity.

In many epidemiological studies, green tea has been shown to be almost universally beneficial, so I wouldn't sweat it.

If it is bad for you will you stop drinking it? Jesus Christ, just live life in moderation.

Can any of the medically trained people here tell me how a high-fat diet causes insulin resistance? I'm genuinely curious.

You'd think most people would have picked up on this by now: fad foods are just that. Fads. Give it a few years and wait for the REAL research to come out.

Or, barring that, just don't pig out on any one particular "healthy" food. Eat a balanced diet and try getting a little exercise now and then. Next thing you know holy shiat you're perfectly healthy!

richmassena23: Can any of the medically trained people here tell me how a high-fat diet causes insulin resistance? I'm genuinely curious.

Abstract
Insulin resistance is often seen as a consequence of obesity and there are several possible links between
adipose tissue function and insulin resistance determined in other organs such as skeletal muscle or liver. One
such link is the regulation of NEFA (non-esterified fatty acid) delivery to the rest of the body. Simplistically, an
expanded adipose tissue mass delivers more NEFA to the systemic circulation and these fatty acids compete
for substrate utilization in skeletal muscle, which in turn reduces glucose utilization. This increases blood
glucose concentration and provides the stimulus for increased insulin secretion and hyperinsulinaemia is a
key feature of the insulin-resistance syndrome. However, there is abundant evidence that adipose tissue
is exquisitely insulin sensitive and hyperinsulinaemia may therefore lead to a constant lipolytic inhibition
in adipose tissue. Consequently, the main function of adipose tissue, to rapidly switch between fat uptake
and fat release, will be hampered. Adipose tissue blood flow is the conveyor of signals and substrates
to and from the adipose tissue. In healthy people adipose tissue blood flow is much enhanced by food intake,
whereas in insulin-resistant subjects this response is blunted. This is another facet of unresponsiveness of
adipose tissue in the insulin-resistance syndrome.
