Hopefully they encrypted the information. Knowing the government, they probably did nothing of the sort.

Meh. I'm in the military, so my identity gets lost, stolen, traded, sold, or otherwise compromised almost quarterly (not kidding). I don't even pay attention to the alerts anymore. At least I got free credit report monitoring out of it...

Okay, I hereby proclaim the Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy Law (also known as Teddy's Rule of Socialist Government Health Care Analogies):

"As a Fark discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Socialist Government Health Care approaches unity."

FTFA: The government isn't even sure when the hard drive was last seen; the most specific they can get is that it was last spotted "sometime between October 2008 and the first week of February and was discovered missing on or about March 24, 2009."

This is awesome info for a fark political thread. Righties can blame the Obama administration, and lefties can blame the Bush administration. Could have disappeared on either one's watch.

"My biggest legacy? Well I lowered the bar of repectability for the office of President. I
took advantage of my power, espcially with a young naive intern who was unfortunate
enough to be assigned to my shark tank. She will never be the same again because
of my selfish actions. All in all, I'm OK with that."

Or we can just blame government because odds are it involved the same almost impossible to fire, unionized civil service employees regardless of administration.

This woman is making a big deal out of nothing. I got the same letter from NARA. I am not alarmed.

It seems what was stolen were the entry/exit logs from the buildings in the White House complex. So, it's your name, birth date & SSN.

I'd be much more worried if the Secret Service files used for deciding security clearance were compromised...but, that does not seem to be the case. That file would include things like your past addresses, credit information, etc.

The only strange part is that the letter sort of devolved into a sales pitch for Experian:

We have no evidence that an unauthorized individual has actually retrieved or is using your personal data. However, as an added precaution against the possible misuse of your information, we are offering you free credit monitoring, identity theft insurance, and fraud resolution assistance for one year, through Experian's Triple Alert Credit Monitoring program. Triple Alert is completely free and will not hurt your credit score.

The Clintons kept tabs on everyone in case they had to be "Vince Fostered" later on.

2009-10-06 09:51:20 AM
FTA: The National Archives' letter didn't say if another person who happened to be a White House intern at the same time, Monica Lewinsky, also has had her security breached, but based on what they did say, I'm betting it was.

Why would it? And why would you care? Oh, right, you are trying to make your article no one gives two shiats about more "newsworthy" by leeching off a decade old scandal.

Well done.

And we shouldn't be in Iraq either. But you don't leave without finishing the job....whatever the hell that means. My brother did 3 tours in Iraq before we finally convinced him it was not worth going back. The reason why he kept re-upping? He wanted to feel like he accomplished something.

Also, I hear people biatch about this...but I don't usually hear those same people biatch about Reagan's cutting and running after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing:
The Marines were moved offshore where they could not be targeted. On February 7, 1984, President Reagan ordered the Marines to begin withdrawal from Lebanon. This was completed on February 26, four months after the barracks bombing; the rest of the Multinational Force was withdrawn by April.

We (Americans) nearly had Somalia taken care of. It was the UN that farked things up for the US and Somalia. Read Gen. Anthony Zinni's take on Somalia in "Battle Ready".

YodaBlues: The reason why he kept re-upping? He wanted to feel like he accomplished something.

This is faulty thinking. It's what kept us in Vietnam so long. Reminds me of that exchange from War Games:
Stephen Falken: The whole point was to find a way to practice nuclear war without destroying ourselves. To get the computers to learn from mistakes we couldn't afford to make. Except, I never could get Joshua to learn the most important lesson.

David Lightman: What's that?

Stephen Falken: Futility. That there's a time when you should just give up.

Jennifer: What kind of a lesson is that?

Stephen Falken: Did you ever play tic-tac-toe?

Jennifer: Yeah, of course.

Stephen Falken: But you don't anymore.

Jennifer: No.

Stephen Falken: Why?

Jennifer: Because it's a boring game. It's always a tie.

Stephen Falken: Exactly. There's no way to win. The game itself is pointless! But back at the war room, they believe you can win a nuclear war. That there can be "acceptable losses."
