I wonder if in France they learn about how the US saved their ass, twice. Or do the history books skip those chapters.

France opposes armed response - Doo dah doo dah!

2001-09-17 12:13:48 AM
In other news, Scotland has suggested to the US that instead of responding to recent terrorist attacks with force, America should instead degrade. Comments were forthcoming from the Bush administration, but inside sources are telling Fark.com that the response has something to do with a kilt joke.

*giggles* clever, Squishy :)

ENGINERD : Apparently American students don't learn about how during the American Revolution, had it not been for France, the Brittish would have WON.

Oh, wait, I'm American, and I learned that. So it wasn't a failure of the American education system... hmm, you must be an idiot then.

Good one, |.

But still. They eat snails.

2001-09-17 01:18:20 AM
I bet if a snail ever tried to bite them, they would surrender.

*heh*

2001-09-17 01:25:03 AM
| yeah, i never understood the "france surrenders" thing. everyone's getting so patriotic after the past week's events when they don't know squat about their own farking history.

2001-09-17 01:44:25 AM
History, exactly. 200 years ago France was strong. Things change.

2001-09-17 01:54:08 AM
What a bunch of spineless bastards. Is this the same country that bailed our ass out 220 years ago.

2001-09-17 02:29:11 AM
I didn't read anything about France 'opposing' armed action. Just that care needs to be taken in chosing the course of action. Unfortunately this mindless jingoism seems entrenched in this forum.

I foresee (and dread) Bush, pushed along by an enraged constituancy spending billions to turn various second world countries into rubble, while terrorists and innoccent muslims alike just get angrier.

If you want to stop terrorism in the US, work out who is involved and only when you're certain bring them to justice either by the book or the sword as long as justice is seen to be done. The US also needs to wake up to the fact that firing cruise missles into somewhere just because its safer for them regardless of the risk to civilans is wrong.

Dont misinterept my words, those responsible for the recent attacks must be brought to justice.

2001-09-17 04:01:22 AM
I fullheartedly agree, Lharvey. It's just that perhaps other terrorists are going to take advantage of the fact that we're "not going to do anything drastic about it", so they'll just keep on attacking. Dunno. *rolls a smoke and thinks...* Maybe the "turn the other cheek" method would work... but I don't see that happening anytime soon, with Bush as president anyway... *le sigh*

2001-09-17 04:04:16 AM
Eeeep! I said 'le sigh'... I'm turning French!

2001-09-17 09:11:53 AM
If this were something "new" or "suprising," I'd say this was yet ANOTHER reason why the french suck.

Instead, I'll just say The French just plain ol' suck.

Ifq:"huge amount of idiots here..."

That's right, frenchie! And we're crazy, too.
-Stupid Frog!-

2001-09-17 09:14:55 AM
Germany, Italy, Norway, and . . . France are all deciding against military support and this should come as know surprise. All of these countries are home to a decided large amount of would be terrorists, or at least extreme muslims.

Not only this but US officials have already been quoted saying, "You have no chance to survive, make your time." Roughly the equivalent to telling the NATO countries to stand down and as we can handle this one with out their wine, their kraut, their pasta, their skiing, and most of all without the Euro.

2001-09-17 09:37:04 AM
When did we even ask for France's opinion? I must have missed that news flash.

I'd love to see 'em wave the olive branch if a terrorist launched a 757 into the Louvre. Too bad they're not important enough to be a target.

I mean, they're FRANCE.

Geez. That arrogance and isolationist attitude is one of the reasons why some people hate you Americans. Keep it up, and you might get attacked again...

2001-09-17 10:39:48 AM

Oh, great the Swedes speak out.
Look, Oscar.
I am Swedish-American. My grandmother got off the boat in 1917.
And I am proud of that.
What I am not proud of is the fact that during WW II the Swedish population just let the Nazis walk right through Sweden into to Norway.
WHO could be more arrogant or Isolationist?

Hmmm..
The Great Escape.
Saving Private Ryan
Escape form Colditz
U571.

Just answered my own question. Sorry!

I'm sure the French twits would have a different opinion if it had been the Statue of Liberty that got destroyed.

Goddam Euros make me fuucking sick. Anytime you farkheads need our help, whether it be money or military support, we say yes and send billions of dollars that you just burn or thousands of soldiers to die on your land.

All we ask is for some a little bit of support, and we can't even get that.

And you wonder why we are seen as isloationists or arrogant? With friends like you, who the hell needs enemies.

2001-09-17 12:08:49 PM

heh . . .

The Three Billy Gruff = The Three Billy Goats Gruff

2001-09-17 12:40:49 PM
yes, clearly the people in here who are jumping to conclusions about the "spineless French" didn't bother to actually read the article, which clearly says that the French support measured and RESPONSIBLE retaliation.

of course, these fools who don't know anything about history are probably also lashing out at innocent muslims and sikhs (who are from India!) in their communities. wise up, people -- you're making america look bad.

2001-09-17 12:55:13 PM
CharlieBrown: You might be a Swedish-American, but you're nonetheless still a half-witted American. I'm not proud of Sweden's actions during the Second World War, but I fail to see its relevance to what's going on in this world today. (It happened over 60 years ago.) The US Government failed to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, and walked out on the UN world conference against racism this year alone.

There seems to be glimmer of hope for change though. Your president said this last Friday: "The United States will lead the world to victory over terrorism." Sure, he's still arrogant, but at least now appears to be open for international co-operation...

Gwinny
Are we starting an office pool on when the French will join the fight?
My money is on never. Where is your money?

2001-09-17 01:14:06 PM
Oscar,
I hope attitudes have changed in Sweden.
150 years of Swedish neutrallity speaks volumns, my freind.
Think of the major wars that have happened in that time.
Sweden has never picked a side. Never stood for anything.
Would you say that isolationist? Would you say that is arrogant?
Before Tuesday, I was a great critic of George W Bush.
I don't think he will be impulsive or unrealistic.
What has Sweden done? Are you picking sides?
Or is my country of origin going to stay neutral.
I hope the Taliban are not interested in Norway.

2001-09-17 01:15:27 PM
Charlie: you are totally missing the point, but that's your loss, not mine.

Faux French Fags.

2001-09-17 02:00:11 PM
Oh, did I say 150 years? I meant to say 187 years.
Did I say that Sweden hasn't stood for any thing? I am wrong.
Many people say that Sweden's worst treachery during the Second World War was the extensive export of iron ore to the German weapon industry...Calculations say that the Swedish iron ore export lengthened the war by two years.
Gwinny I will admit to not liking the French. I will admit to rubbing their noses in it. You are right, time will tell. Let us wait and see how the French people perform. (I say that without sarcasm, really. No really).

2001-09-17 02:12:56 PM
Is this an experiment to see if people read the articles?

The link ain't working for me.

2001-09-17 02:18:07 PM
Now it works.

Yeah, they waffle, but they don't overtly 'oppose' military actions. They say the same things most of the more intelligent farkers have been saying - look for the individual terrorists, don't just bomb the f out of Afghanistan.

2001-09-17 02:19:14 PM
Here it is in a nut-shell:
French President Jacques Chirac has pledged support for the United States in combating terrorism attacks but senior members of the government have warned against following Washington blindly into any possible military retaliation. I pass no judgement on it's meaning.

2001-09-17 02:30:59 PM
French President Jacques Chirac has told CNN: "When it comes to punishing this murderous folly, France will be at the side of the United States."

I hope people can read the above sentence.

Btw here's an article about Germany's stance on the issue
Germany, and it's similar to what the French are saying.

2001-09-17 03:19:33 PM
Ok..which one of you tools sent the EXACT fark link text to the dOpie & Anthony radio show just now?

2001-09-17 03:25:50 PM
I was just wondering the same thing.

2001-09-17 03:40:18 PM
CharlieBrown: So you've actually resorted to quoting irrelevant high-school essays now? That's just pathetic; and you're not making any sense either. True -- Sweden doesn't belong to any military alliance (for the moment), but that doesn't mean that we don't "pick sides". Sweden was opposed to America's war in Vietnam, and helped ANC to power in South Africa. Your whole perception of neutrality is completely warped.

2001-09-17 03:59:25 PM
I think if you really want to dig deep, you will find out that during the Revolutionary War, Benjamin Franklin traveled to France to buy .59 caliber Charleyville muskets for the American Army. The important word is BUY. Not receive as gratis. And the ONLY reason the French helped us was because they saw it as an indirect opportunity to fight the British.

I think we should form committies to investigate the various other avenues of approach to terrorism, like the French have suggested. Aw, hell, on second thought, fark THE FRENCH.

2001-09-17 04:07:07 PM
Oscar,
As I said before, I have always been proud of my Swedish grandparents. They came here without a penny in their pockets. They worked during the day and took English classes at night. Their work ethic was impressive. But I could never get over the fact that the country that they came from was a 'tool' for Germany during WWII.
But yes, that is in the past and my personal issue to deal with.
Keep us updated on the Swedish stance on this war.
