Give the devil his due, there's no evidence that Sherman ever had any civilians killed. Furthermore, his orders relevant to the destruction of property applied only to any locals who resisted the troop movements or hid forage from troops. Sadly, this. No matter how much we want to be nice to our enemies, the fact is that most cultures won't accept defeat without being beaten so damned hard that they never want to let it happen again (please see Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and The Old South).
