FTFA: "I stood up to a hoodie and it was me who got done."

What the hell? I thought the British could speak English. That doesn't even make sense.

That is something I'd hear in Georgia.

Nothing wrong with that line - bit slangy in a UK tabloid aimed at UK people with UK language.

But then why not simply ignore the horror of the story itself. I know the hoodie can't be nicked, but then the gran should not have been either.

Assault usually has a degree of intent, and I can't think she rushed out of her house to pick on him seeing him pass her home innocently.

I love how the article goes on in painful detail about this woman's life story when the fact is absolutely none of that matters as far as the law is concerned.

This.

Being old, talented, rich, poor, or having any number of tragedies and success in your life does not excuse a crime... be it drugging and raping a 13 year old girl (and murdering her in 1990), or hitting a neighborhood hoodlum.

It makes perfect sense. Sorry, should a British newspaper start using American slang instead of British slang so Americans can understand it? The people who the newspaper is geared towards and sold to understand it perfectly. Perhaps Mexican newspapers should start being printed just in English too while we're at it so you can understand them? It's American-centric people like you who think the world should revolve America around and be Americanized who make the world hate Americans.

It seems the author of the article had already decided that there's no possible way that a 71 year old woman could be the aggressor. I have to wonder about the honesty of a woman using a "walking frame" to appear in court after she was willing to leave her house, confront the teenager who is much bigger than her, and apparently was holding him by the lapels (hoodies have lapels?) when the police get there.

Maybe she just made a series of bad choices and really was the victim, but it sounds like she may not be as innocent as the story implies.

What's a hoodie? Are these guys as badass as they sound or are they complete pussies as I imagine them to be.

When I read prodding, I was expecting she used a cattle prod, not her finger. Using a cattle prod would be grounds for assault IF she were not defending herself. But her finger? WTF???

In the US there are lots of circumstances where if you (as an adult) get into an altercation with a minor then you are liable, no matter what the kid did.

Thumping a 17 year old in the chest is "battery"?

That 17 year old has self-respect oozing from him like sweat on a cold beer. The cops are automatons.

funny I kinda figured the same, cuz i didnt think people would arrest a 70+ lady for poking someone. Its very possible this women is old and a bit crazy and did step over the line. But come on. she old.

also bringing in the whole surviving Nazi Germany, while interesting is so completely irrelevent and it make her seem more guilty. Why would that need to be a an issue?

It's impossible to say what really happened because the article is pathetic. In the old-school definition of pathetic.

i suspect that said old lady was asked by the police to let go of said young man and refused. the suns' belief that there is nothing that an old lady can do that merits arrest is a little odd.

for the record a hoodie is a person who wears a hooded top, often chavs but tecnically i am a hoodie as well as i have quite the penchant for the comfy piece of clothing.

Just because she's old and tiny doesn't mean she can't be an @sshole. I see lots of little old lady @sswipes often on the subway. They think everyone owes them and they can't keep thier lipstick-smeared mouths shut.

stjeanp: Rule, Britannia...

so if you were a chief constable you would push the ACPO to issue a guideline to arrest the youngest person in an altercation and believe the oldest person present?

There's a Family Guy episode where a nun in poking a guy with her finger but he can't feel it because he has a super-thick sweater on. Tried to GIS the image and failed got 'nuthin.

To sum up-

1)Crabby old biatch does a get the hell off my lawn to some kids playing ball on her street.

2) Kids call crabby old biatch a crabby old biatch, keep playing.

3) Having failed to scare off kids with crabby old biatch act, crabby old biatch goes out and gets physical with teenagers, figuring, "I may be a crabby old biatch, but I want them off my street, so I'll go scare them off by being a pushy, scary, crabby old biatch. Besides, who's gonna believe these damn kids...and I'll tell people they threw rocks, even though no one else saw it, there's no broken windows, or any other evidence besides my old lady righteousness. Maybe I'll ever claim they attacked me."

4) Kid is smarter than crabby old biatch, and actually uses the law to protect his rights to play ball without being hassled by crabby old biatches.

5) Crabby old biatch meets her match.

I don't see the problem. The kid was playing football in the street, lady comes out, starts poking him in the chest and yelling at him because she thinks he threw rocks at her house. Why should the kid be arrested because some old loon wants to blame him for something?

hoodie - hoodlum, usually in a hoodie
yob - inverse of boy, sometimes derogatory
lorry - truck
lift - elevator
clenge - vajayjay

Which part are you having trouble with?

"stood up to" - confronted
"hoodie" - a hooded sweatshirt, or someone who wears one
"done" - punished

Clenge is a new one on me. Minge usually refers to the visible outer parts, including/especially the hair. Fanny sounds a bit more childish, and is used as a mild insult, you fanny - milder than "twat". Wasting time on fark might be termed "fannying about".

Disposition of character is very important in legal trials; often an attorney's main argument is framed around whether the defendant is a "good person" or a "bad person."
