Would never buy a GM or Crysler after what they did.

Ford? NONE*!

Oh, and 156,673 people were lied to...

*Volvo took some...but not the parent company.

45% decline - is that year over year Sept '08 to Sept '09, or August to September '09?

Ah found it. That doesn't mean as much, car sales as a whole are still weak. Month to month is a very different thing from year to year. Also, you should have picked something better for your stopped clock moment.

A 45% drop be it daily weekly monthly or annual farking BLOWS.

It actually makes more sense to do year-over-year comparisons, that's how numbers usually are with car sales because they greatly fluctuate seasonally.

Only reason I asked is because I didn't see it specified in TFA, and because subby mentioned Cash for Clunkers which makes it sound like a direct comparison to August.

GM was actually down in August by 19% vs '08, which is not good, but is a lot better than being down 45%.

Ford: Aug up 17%, Sept down 5%
Honda: Aug up 9.9%, Sept down 20.1%
Toyota: Aug up 6.4%, Sept down 16.1%
GM: Aug down 19.9%, Sept down 45%
Chrysler: Aug down 14.4%, Sept down 42%

Then there's
Hyundai: Aug up 47%, Sept up 27%

Also found this:
At G.M., which is eliminating four of its eight brands as part of its post-bankruptcy restructuring, sales for the four brands that will remain - Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC - were down 41 percent in September. Sales for the four brands being cut - Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn - were down 67 percent.
Ouch, down 41% not including their soon to be orphaned nameplates. And yeah they're all struggling but GM and Chrysler are struggling the most - though just coming out of bankruptcies, that's not all that surprising.

It'll be fun watching the feds try to justify propping up Chrysler further, once Hyundai passes them in sales. And that month isn't too far off...

the only "people" buying GMs are rental car companies! no one really buys American..i mean not purposely. do they? BTW, had a rental car from enterprise, Ford Escape, looked up the MPG it SAYSSSS it gets..its like 22mpg. Yeahhh about that. BS!!

To be fair, you can say the same about Foreign cars.

I moved from Madison, WI to Lansing, MI (don't ask) anyhow... I was surprised to find people actually driving GMC vehicles somewhere. If you're wondering where all there sales are from, my guess is a good portion of them come from people who live in Michigan or who work for GM in general. Not that many people around here can afford a car, let alone a new car. I don't think I've ever seen as many driven to the ground GM vehicles in my whole life prior to this as I have the past month or so.

2009-10-01 07:31:08 PM
GM and Chrysler won't survive. Bailing them out is seen as one of Obama's plans. People who support Obama and his policies tend to hate vehicles from the big three. People who can't stand Obama and his policies, and the union ownership of GM and Chrysler, used to love vehicles from the big three. Now they find themselves wanting to undermine Obama by only buying Ford. The owner of my company, a Dodge man his entire life, just purchased his first Ford.

So GM and Chrysler shouldn't plan on getting a huge segment of the market any time soon.

You realize that the manufacturers post EPA numbers, right?

As far as GM, I bought a Vue last July with 0% APR and I've been very happy with it. I would buy another. Traded in an 05 Vibe at that time, and was happy with that as well(and it had a little bit better mileage) but the wife treated it like shiat and 0% and a supplier pricing discount was too good to pass up.

The company sold 28,683 units this August versus 18,932 units in August 2008 and had an 11-percent gain year-over-year. Subaru sales for August 2009 also showed a 31-percent increase over July 2009 Subaru sales, which was also a record month for the company." (new window)

We just bought a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The whole process was great from walking onto the lot to closing the deal weeks later. Walking onto a lot for a GM model, Chrysler, or Ford dealership was like walking onto the set of dawn of the living dead. Swarming sales droids and all. Its like they didn't want anyone to buy a car.

/and their cars sucked

Sometimes I just don't understand GM. This is a company that puts cheesy independent front suspensions on class 3 trucks.

If Ford/International could get their acts together to get a good, reliable diesel in their pickups like they had with the 7.3, GM would be doomed forever.

We're holding out on buying a Jetta Sportwagen because the 2010 models are going to be sporting a redesigned grille and better interior electronics.

Find me another midsize wagon that gets over 40mpg on the highway and can run biofuels and I'll buy it. Heck, I'll even buy a GM vehicle if they make one like that.

Don't let ancient Martina in a Forester commercial influence your whole understanding of Subaru. I beat the snot out of our Impreza Sport off-road and it rocks. '97 we bought used at 40k. We put 100k HARD use on it and it still runs like a top. Looks like a shiatbox now from all the outdoor adventures we take it on, but you don't have to worry about theft or breakins and it is tops in the winter and on frozen lakes.

Wish I could afford a WRX.

I don't know that they're premium price for a non-premium product. I'm looking at the 2010 GTI. It's more expensive than other tuned compact hatchbacks (with the exception of the Mini S), but you also get a MUCH nicer interior, better design, better noise insulation and ride.

Agree on the service though. I don't want a compact car that's as finicky as a sports car.

If only lesbians drive them then I guess I am now a lesbian. I love my subaru, it drives awesome on dirt roads through the mud and is one of the best cars I have had in the snow. Not to mention it still runs fantastic with 200k+ miles on it. The next car I get will be another subaru as well, just it will be an STI so it goes a little faster.

Ford was down 5% compared to last year, down 34.8% compared to last month

well, 156,673 cars in a month may not sound like much, if you do the math, they are selling 3.6 cars per minute at that rate. Say GM's average cut of each sale is $1000, it's amazing that they lose money while bringing in $3600/minute.

That's what I mean. You're paying a premium for aesthetics rather than performance or longevity/dependability.
