This should have wide support on both sides, right?

So a photo ID vs. verifying your SS and identity? Whatever, so long as EMT's aren't demanding papers before they take you to the hospital.

Though how would they do this? You'd need to go somewhere in person to sign up then. You'd be setting up a DMV for medical care. I thought that the republicans were against that kind of thing.

So, the plan is to make everything as difficult and time consuming as possible?

You have no idea.

So they just walk in and use their second cousin's ID just like they do now.

You could probably take care of voter registration right there, too. Citizen or not.

Redundant legislation is redundant.

I think you should also carry a card proving you're financially worth saving.

You mean they don't check IDs now?

make me some tea: You mean they don't check IDs now?

Yeah you have to do that stuff now. If you go to the ER whomever is checking you in has to do it. If it's an outpatient procedure you have to do it. If you are taken in by ambulance once you are stable someone from the hospital does it.

I'm not sure what the big deal is.

2009-10-01 10:36:09 AM
Just for kicks, I'd like to see a comparison of Medicare fraud numbers resulting from immigrants, and numbers resulting from docs/health service centers (hospitals, etc.).

Immigrants are always a handy bogeyman, but I imagine the fraud that exists in the current system is much bigger.

Grassley's amendment was beaten back 10-13 on a party-line vote.

SHOCKING

Wait can illegals even get driver's licenses?

The information is to get the heath care coverage not to receive medical treatment.

There's a simple solution for that problem.

Yup, just immigrants. Because people like my parents and millions of other hard-working people who left their homes and families to help build this country are a bunch of fraudsters.

Fark you republicans. I hope you all DIAF and then burn in hell.

Gwendolyn: I'm not sure what the big deal is.

It's feel-good legislation to satisfy the conservatives' home constituencies. It accomplishes nothing but appeases the home crowd. Same with Hatch's abortion amendment.

In many states, yes, they can.

// I think Grassley wants a universal govt issued ID card proving you are acceptable to be signed up for the private industry insurance plans...

// almost there, almost there...

make me some tea: You mean they don't check IDs now?

Not until you're stabilized. Which is good. Suppose you got mugged and shot, and the guy ran off with your wallet - should you be denied immediate treatment because you can't prove who you are?

I've been a proponent of universal ID. Seems to me it would alot easier to enact that for people already "in the system" than trying to get undocumented people documented for the purpose of health care coverage.

Is there some reason a simple health card wouldn't work?

Except, that you would have to be present somewhere for them to compare your face to your ID. All at once you've created a legion of bureaucrats and DMV type offices to sign up for something that could have been done either online for by mail.

The GOP wants to create the lines they have been warning us about.

Pretty much. It's a minor, redundant thing. I'm much more concerned about the fact that the Senate is selling out real reform because too many of the Democrats are corporate whores. I knew the Republicans were. But the Dems have made numerous concessions without getting a single GOP vote for their trouble. wtf is up with the finance committee? They voted down a public option that 65% of the public supports and most doctors and nurses support.

Even with the whitehouse and 60 Senators, the Democrats suck at actually getting shiat done. If Republicans had that kind of power, they'd be ramming through their legislation and laughing at the feeble attempts of Democrats to stop them.

I'm thinking the basic problem is this: Obviously the GOP is the party of big business, so when they are in power, what big business wants is what happens. However, enough of the Democrats are in the same pockets that when Democrats are in power, the GOP minority continues to vote en masse for their corporate masters and enough Democrats join them that the result is much the same. Big business gets what they want. What the public wants simply isn't relevant.

Thanks, Democratic senators, you worthless, spineless, corporate whoring twats.

On that point, yes. It's a poison pill amendment of sorts. Two birds, one stone.

How do they know whether someone is an immigrant? Might as well make everyone show IDs. There are plenty of people who don't have an accent but are still immigrants.

Absolutely. Using the same reasoning that many use in support of the death penalty, it's a shame if a few innocents die, but that is the price we must pay for vigilance. We must protect our precious health care resources at any cost, especially from those dirty immigrants who took er jerbs.

Here's an idea.

For those folks who come into the ER of a public hospital and are given treatment and are later found to be residing here illegally, when they are released, issue a deportation order and forward the hospital bills to the government of their home country.

Oh that reminds me...

That crazy huge group of illegals that lived up the street with the chickens and 12 cars in the yard someone in the neighborhood called immigrant, the police, and the owners of the house they were renting and it ended with almost everyone in the house getting taken into some sort of custody.

I never cared too much except for possibly running over a chicken or two but someone went for the jugular. The inside of the house had to be gutted. I have no idea why or for what. I felt bad for the people who owned the house and were renting it out. What the hell can you do to a house in 4 months that makes you toss out the drywall?

Well, I was kind of joking. But yeah, I'm not too keen on the mandate. Without real reform in the existing system, it's like throwing good money after bad. Except it's the people's money.

Is any of this "talk" going to create a farking job, or not? Lots of unemployed people would do the shiat jobs the illegals are currently doing to stay afloat. I sure have, and would do it again.

Prove it. Show me the plethora of Americans rushing out to take janitorial jobs, landscaping, dishwashing. Don't give me that one NY Times example either, show me some evidence. Or, shut the fark up.

Well this way its a never ending problem that can be used over and over. I say we should send the IRS after the employers, it has got to be some sort of tax fraud.

Thanks for the encouragement. Lowe's and Home Depot both told me I was overqualified for every position I applied for, even stocking the shelves. Nice thought, though. Far from reality, however.
