Ok first of all I just want to say that i'm surpsrised she was found alive and also relieved. There are a few things that have tickling me. First of all if you're gone for 9 months with two bums then I think she would have more than one opportunity to escape but she didn't. I mean they found her 19 kms from where she lived, she couldn't have jumped on a damn bus or something? Couldn't she have made a commotion or something and say i'm Elizabeth Smart in a public place. People would've helped her and the kidnappers wouldn't have done anything to her in a public place. Something tells me she probably enjoyed being gone for 9 months. I know I would if I had to share a room with my 9 year old sister(which I don't have). She probablt doesn't wanna come home but that's just me. Or she probably was too damn frightened to do anything in those 9 months. Maybe.

Buddypickle: Psycho-Jay's comment was certainly a troll, and a poorly written one at that. Hell, I'm surprised he didn't start rambling about the International Jewish Rye Bread Conspiracy while he was at it. I don't want to troll (famous last words) and I know I'm getting a little off topic, but any organization that sets different standards of behavior for members based on arbitrary criteria seems oppressive at best.

On an unrelated, more on topic note: I'm sorry, but this isn't news. Here's news, Serbian Prime Minister Killed. While it's unfortunate that a girl got kidnapped, it really doesn't change my life in any way, shape, or form. Conversely, last time an important head of state was killed in that area, we wound up with World War I. Yes, I know Ferdinand was killed in Sarajevo, not Belgrade.

According to the press conference, the PD got a call about a man that looked like the guy known as "Emmanuel" that the cops wanted for questioning in the case. The tipsters told them they were walking down the street. Cops answered the call, met them walking down the street, questioned them. They all had on disguises the police said in the news conference. Not just Elizabeth. Then, they took them to the SLC police station.

oh goody, psycho jay, the same guy who has heatedly retarted opinions on video games has heatedly retarted opinions on other people's religons.

2003-03-12 08:09:43 PM
Malinois You said it. I never would have thought that this girl was still alive, even if I were a relative and really, really, wanted it to be so. No matter what may be wrong with her, she can be fixed. If her parents are talking about "a miracle"--well, I'll just shut up and let them say it.

Don't blame an organized religion for the crappy additude of some butt hole sitting behind you. That's all I'm saying. in the end it all comes down to individuals. In New Orleans, there are nice catholics and jerk catholics...but a WHOLE lotta catholics. SLC / Mesa suffer from the same problem.

That lady is a dork, and she's responsible for her dorkness.

Looking at her picture thats up on the front of CNN right now......

who the fark owns a harp????

2003-03-12 08:12:03 PM
Oh, and at 7:30, the Smart family is holding a press conference. CNN will have coverage of it.

2003-03-12 08:12:08 PM
Actually i have to agree with Psycho-Jay.. i grew up in Utah in the Mormon church no less. The way the church treats it's members is bad the way they treat non members is even worse. If you are not a good mormon (or at least put on the front of such) you should be boiled in oil until you repent and see the error in your ways.
I am just happy that she is home and safe, where it goes from here we will just have to see.

Psycho-Jay
My guess is her father is literally going to kill her. I believe she ran away because her father, being a devout mormon, sexually mentally and physicly abused her. Now he'll probably kill her to restore his family's honor and street preacher will get blamed for that. The church could arrange it. Utah is run by a vast mormon conspiracy that has as much racist hatred as any of Hitler's Nazies. They also treat their women just as bad as any muslim does. That's what mormon is; a combination Nazism/Islam.

This isn't trolling, these are my honest beliefs. If I had know Smart was still alive and well prior to anyone finding her, I would have prayed no one ever did.

Buddypickle
No...its trolling. Tell my wife that this is how you think she is treated ("as bad as any muslim does") and she will kick you in the nutts so hard you'd have a hard time remembering your name.

2003-03-12 08:15:02 PM
When does a religion get nutty enough to be considered a "cult"?

Cause Mormonism crossed that line on Day One.

2003-03-12 08:15:46 PM
Press Conference in 15 minutes at the LDS Church that they attend. ... Global coverage

2003-03-12 08:16:06 PM
Uhm... let me clarify.

8:30 Eastern
7:30 Central
6:30 Mountain
5:30 Pacific

2003-03-12 08:16:06 PM
The way the church treats it's members is bad the way they treat non members is even worse.

Cept for the money we give the poor, both member or not, and the predomiant belief that all men should be able to worship who, what and how they may.

Whatever...do something you are really embarassed about or something?

2003-03-12 08:17:12 PM
I also believe that the woman from that case where she was supposingly kidnapped and kept in a BDSM dungeon for 7 years went willingly. I saw it on A&E, she was actually allowd to visit her family and never once did she mention to them that she was kidnapped. She played the "kidnapper" and his wife. But Bill Curtis is a f*cking conservative.

2003-03-12 08:17:15 PM
"When does a religion get nutty enough to be considered a "cult"?"

What religion isn't nutty? When was the last time you saw someone get turned into a pillar of salt, part a sea or walk on water (That Cars music video aside)?

Great news for people in Utah.

The press was going a little overboard on some things, though.

Worst question from the press conference: Chief, if you knew in October what you know now, would you have focused more on Mitchell?

His response, dripping with sarcasm: You're asking if I would have focused more on Mitchell if I knew then what I know now? Yeah, I think I would have.

Canadianbeersux: who the fark owns a harp????

My old Celtic Musical Traditions teacher does. But then, I guess that would be pretty obvious.

I am with the conspiracy theory folks...

I don't need to validate myself with you I know what happens (not just in Utah) if you even show even the slightest interest in religion (when the elders come-a-knockin') and are not within the confines of an established religion, (and some times that doesn't matter) execept The Book of Morman just to make them go away... no-way they'll be back tommorrow, and the next, and the next. Stereotypes, bah, reality! If I had a choice though I would love to live in Utah, people are very friendly (sometimes to friendly) and if you express yourself as not interested they will leave you alone (Mormans) for the most part (visits from Elders every now and then) so all in all I do envy you for where you live (even though I live in So Cal). I am a baptized LDS (jack) and was never brainwashed but that may be because I have no brain to be washed. :)

You probably have your wife so f*cked up from the mental and physical abuse that she worships you as a decendent of Jesus Christ. Get a non-mormon to back you up.

2003-03-12 08:24:13 PM
Christ...is there ANYONE who didn't think she was long by now?

2003-03-12 08:25:14 PM
I was reading the comments and some of you are jumping in way too early with troubling ideas.

A bunch of people, based on what little has been revealed are already presuming that she willingly ran off with this creep, making comments like "why didn't she escape" or "I bet running away was her idea". A few points I'd like to make...

1. any older man who kidnaps (or "persuades" her to come with him) a 14 year old girl is a farking creep. Even if the girl hated her home life (which from what I've seen, I don't believe) a grown person can make the reasoned deduction that removing her is wrong.

2. Blaming Elizabeth for not escaping (or even trying to escape) is also farked up. Who the hell knows what was going on with her? Especially this early on, for all we know, the couple may have told her they'd kill her little sister or her family.

3. Placing any sort of responsibilty for her situation on her is flat out inappropriate. (again especially this early into the story) Point blank, a horrible person (or persons) did a vile thing, and all scorn lays deservedly on him. Even if she was willing in some hard to believe way, it's still the grown-up who's the villian

could you guys be right? kinda sorta, but I doubt it....

DannySpaz-

Elizabeth Smart's little sister is only 9 years old. I can seldom get a reliable answer from my 7 year old about what she had for lunch.

You haven't thought about this too objectively, have you?

2003-03-12 08:28:15 PM
Hush up everyone, the press conference is about to start! Another half of hour of no new information whatsoever.

I'm sure that Larry King is sporting his first woody again in years right about now, and sending plane tickets to the Smart household at this moment.

2003-03-12 08:28:56 PM
What the fark man, she was all dressed up and disguised, strange story, they should make a movie about it, unbelievable, was she a sex slave of some sort, who knows, anything is possible (Emmanuel/Emmanuelle), hm a prophet, he didn't predict he would end up in jail, quite an amateur then, cute girl though.

/thinking aloud

You go ED

2003-03-12 08:30:15 PM
BullSh** !!! if you live in a "mormon" comunity and need some form of assistance, forget going to the LDS church for it, you HAVE to have a bishops auth form in order to get ANYTHING from them. I know of several instances that a single mom was on welfare and needed some food for her kids and the Bishop said you are not a member but if you will join and give us tithing we will then consider helping you.

I'm very glad for her and her family... and good news is definitely welcome, almost forgot what it looked like....

2003-03-12 08:31:22 PM
Mad_carder, you are not exaggerating about Mormonism. Those people are crazy farks. They're almost as bad as Scientologists.

2003-03-12 08:31:24 PM
Funny... I first heard about this over on 3K...
and I have only two things to say:

1. Amen.
2. I will still be praying for her.

We'll accept your praise now for cracking the case.

Yeeha! This is un-farkin'-believeable!

A friend and I were just talking about how terrible it would be to lose a child. It awesome that this actually worked out to the positive for a change.

I hope that guy goes to jail for a long time... I hope the prisoners treat him "better" that they treat most pedophiles. Let his asshole never close again.

Mad_carder
Yeah!!! Must be cause you said so! That's good enough for me! Mad_carder said so...Everyone rejoice! The only sorce of truth on planet earth has spoken. If I were you, I'd take his word for it.

Whatever...

2003-03-12 08:39:07 PM
I'm so sick of hearing all this anti-Mormon crap. If you have something that is valid and relevant, voice it, but most of you are just talking out your butts.

Mad_carder: I don't have any idea what the stake/ward is like where you live, but I know for a fact that the Church in most other places very frequently gives money to non-members. On my mission, I saw thousands of dollars in food given to non-members- often strangers who would just see the church in the phone book and call.

You don't like the church, fine. You want to share that with everyone, that's also fine. But lying, exaggerating, etc just to make yourself feel justified with your dislike for the church ruins your integrity.

2003-03-12 08:39:49 PM
Oh, this should be fun, what Emmanuel has to say to the press. If she was willing, or if she was brainwashed...wow, headlines will be coming.

Later.

Holy shiat. Maybe there is a conspiracy!!!

I'm glad she is alive but she's farked for life and this is too wierd to take at its face value.

2003-03-12 08:47:54 PM
i heard she was in her tree house the whole time

2003-03-12 08:48:03 PM
Cool. Leave it to farkers to turn a bit of great news into a religious flamewar. Yeeeaah, cooooool.

In other totally unrelated news, I think we need a "Connecticut" tag to go along with the "Florida" tag. ...to use when something happens in Connecticut. ...like, when something bad happens. 'Cause bad stuff happens in Connecticut. ...a lot.

my integrety is perfectly fine, i just do not approve of how the church has treated people from my experences, I know what i have experenced and been a part of as a former member of the hierarchy of the LDS church, this gives me a unique oportunity to understand and know what i have been a part of in the past, from the guildlines and process manuals that have to be fallowed in order to offer others assitance. I am not bashing mormons or members of the LDS church in general, i freely admit that there are alot of good people and people who i call friends that are in the LDS church but....
