I don't need photographic evidence. My dad told me once about the times he used to go to the south side of Chicago to score some speedballs.

I also spent the back half of my high school sentence stealing my mom's weed.

That is pretty cool. I also submit that the guy, second in from the right in the front row, with the farking awesome chops kicks a measurable amount of ass, as well. Ditto for Shaggy standing behind him.

Oh yeah - my dad was also inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so there's that.

Hmm.. I always feel like my parents were born old, but my dad got some kind of award for pulling his friend out of a burning jeep in VietNam, and Mom had a very rough childhood, so she doesn't talk about it much.

/Either way, I have awesome parents.

My dad was an idealistic hippie, then he was a yuppie, now he has a diversified portfolio and a peace sign on the back of his SUV. I think that about sums up the Boomers.

My dad fires himself out of a cannon for tips and my mom owns a pillow factory.

they were kinda made for each other.

My father was a navigator with the Coast Guard during WWII. They did runs through the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean bringing supplies to Northern Africa. He told me that Tunisia was really emotionally difficult for him because all the little kids wold be begging for food - but once they got it, the parents would take it from them and the kids had nothing. So he and a group of guys would take the kids into the mess halls and feed them to make sure they had, at least, one good meal a day.

I thought that was pretty cool.

2009-09-27 11:18:24 AM
My dad is one of those guys that sees a job that needs to be done, and when everyone around him refuses to volunteer, he steps up.

So, he climbed the tower to change the lightbulbs in the high school football stadium. Probably four or five stories high. There's so many stories like this I don't remember them all.

I recently found a picture of my dad in the 70s standing on a rock on some mountain, wearing flannel and looking like Robert Redford.

The weird part is he's an Asian software programmer

Before they came up with those nifty mounted camera's, my dad would hang out the open door of a plane, and take battle field pictures for Stars and Stripes, while someone held his ankles.

My dad got kicked out of a "Christian" college for drinking on campus. The college administration then let the draft board know he was available, and off to Vietnam he went. He met my mom during boot camp ...

and my dad nearly got beat up for taking pictures of cops beating Vietnam protesters cause the pics showed the cops were not wearing badges

My Dad, who passed away this August, was a Glass Worker Union rep. He sent this pic in 2007 saying," I ran into this guy in a bar in Nashville." He knew everybody. I miss him.
I know this isn't exactly the theme of the thread, but anybody who met him knew that he was cool.

2009-09-27 01:04:36 PM
My parents weren't cool. My paternal grandparents, however, were friggin' AWESOME.

Grandma was a gypsy who was whisked out of Hungary as Germany was invading. Settled in a gypsy camp in Storrs, CT, where she told fortunes and later served as liaison between the camp & local police.

Grandpa grew up in Hell's Kitchen and was a complete hoodlum. When he realized he looked EXACTLY like Joe DiMaggio, he ran scams in boutiques in NYC, telling them he needed a fur coat or diamond ring for his girlfriend & if they gave it to him, he'd give them an autograph & endorse their store. A LOT of stores fell for this.

/Wish I had a pic of Grandpa on this hard drive. I'll come back later to post it

My mom was pretty cool.

My dad was cool in his own special way. (meaning not very)

Case in point: he bought a pair of bright yellow butt-short swim trunks in the 70's when they were cool. He wore them until they were practically obscene and they finally disintegrated one day while he was water skiing on the lake. It was the 90's.

2009-09-27 02:02:43 PM
My dad hung out with and partied with Grand Funk Railroad and he played a gig with Bob Seger and the Last Heard. Mom used to go rollerskating with one of The Supremes once in a while. I'd say they were pretty cool

My daddy was born in a holler down in Tennessee. His dad wanted him gone so bad, he signed papers so my daddy could run off to WW2 when he was 16. He always told me he didn't know what spaghetti was until he joined the army.

My mommy was a saint!

2009-09-27 02:25:36 PM
My father had a working gold mine in Arizona and my step-dad ran shine. Does that count?

Mom wouldn't know cool if it jumped up and bit her on the ass.

//Although she did dump a pot of hot coffee in George Jones' lap when he pinched her on the ass as she waited tables.

2009-09-27 02:43:04 PM
My parent's were so awesome that I feel sorry for them when I think of us kids in comparison.

The stories abound, and only now are they really starting to come out of the woodwork when we catch up over a family holiday. The most recent discovery was that dad did stunt work for movies diving out of moving cars. It took for me to be 28 before that came up in conversation so who knows what gems are yet to be discovered.

It must have been a different world back then, who just goes and does that kind of thing these days?

It wasn't until I was about 25 until I realized that my parents we're kinda cool.

They gave me money to buy Metallica, Megadeth and Motorhead albums.

Don't really recall ever having a curfew (outside school days), was pretty much self policing.

Morning usually consisting of dad plying his old records, things like The Beatles, Beachboy, Blood Sweat and Tears, Hendrix, Doors, Donovan, Yardbirds, et al.

They used to drink a beer or wine every night, since it was always around alcohol was never a big deal to me which probably led the avoidance of the whole binge drinking thing. Funny how I recall as a kid (10 or so in the mid 80's) going the my dads bowling league and him giving me money to go the bar to get a round of beer for their team. That kind of shait could never happen now.

And most of all they weren't helicopter parents, something I'm trying not to be. Kids need to fail, they need to know that failure sucks otherwise there's no motivation to do good.

Yes, Ted was hilarious in the movie, but I challenge anyone to say that a real life version of him would be "cool."

My mom wouldn't have known what cool was, even if it jumped up and bit her on the ass.

Dad was... strange. He was listed as 4-F for the draft in WWII, so he created an electrical contracting company with his mom and won the wiring contract for the Bremmerton Navy Shipyards. He swore up and down he hated cats, but every stray kitten he found wandering around his work ended up having a forever home at our house. He would proclaim that education was important, yet pull us out of class on Thursdays to go ride trains, watch ball games or deliver cars with him and Fridays were "optional" for classes, since we would head to Nevada every weekend.

He came up with a few classics, my favorite being "You kids need to realize that life ain't gonna hand you everything" as he handed me the keys to a new car.

My other favorite of his: "Yeah, you're never gonna make a living playing around with those damn toy computers" - as he accepted a part time job offer from me to install the operating systems of the computers I built for a local computer store chain.

My mom used to play sax in a band. Grew up in Spanish Harlem, which I imagine, she needed to be cool to survive. My dad used to hang at the Copacabana. My uncle ran the place. He also did special ops in Vietnam. I never had the time to ask about it, he died when I was 17. He was still cool when I was a teenager, got into a bar brawl at the Limelight in Manhattan. Someone insulted my stepmother. I didn't realize, as an adult, how cool my mom was until she moaned over not getting Stones tickets. Who knew!

But when you lived in central Arkansas in the 70's, there isn't much more to do outside of football season. I just hope my mom didn't pass on some disease to me that she caught from my dad after he did his deed.

belhade: penthesilea: My was mom a junkie whore in a biker gang. My dad was a drug dealer. Theirs was a business relationship. My dad gave mom goods in exchange for her services. Mom got knocked up and grandpa was rather insistent that the two crazy kids get married. Five months later, I was born.

My Dad spent every night for almost fout years on a PT boat hunting Jap supply barges.

Sold JFK an important island artifact that the natives used to prepare virgins for their wedding night.

JFK was stupid enough to buy the story.

My grandfather was in the navy during WWII and got ribbed his entire career because he got everyone riled up about an incoming torpedo when it was just a floating broom ;)

My grandma was with a group of women who typed up incoming secret messages for the military (WWII) but never knew what the whole message was because they would only encode a bit of the message, and another girl would take over, and so forth.

As far as I know my parents were pretty low key ;) Unless you count a 27 year old getting a 17 year old knocked up :P

When we were stationed overseas, my mom and her friend Marge Vasheena would sneak off for a week in Bangkok or Hong Kong.

My dad was a conservative military dude but a couple of times I came home and Chuck Yeager was drinking a beer at our dining room table. He went fishing once with Clint Eastwood. Both of my parents were very attractive and were younger than everyone else's parents. So that was cool.

Also, my dad always bought some crap Russian or Czech car every year. I have no idea where he got them. I remember one called a Publeeka(spelled phonetically). Anybody know anything about those?

The coolest thing they ever did was eat a candlelight dinner.

Let me explain.

A tornado had just gone down the other side of the street and darkened everything. We kids hurried downstairs and there the 'rents were. Eating dinner. Our whole world had just been turned upside down. People were shouting in the street. Sirens were wailing. And Mom and Dad were smoking their cigs, drinking their beers, and eating their burgers by candlelight. Very soothing.

My dad won't talk about growing up. But every once in a while I get my uncle, (his little brother) to share some stories.

My Grandpa was apparently a big drinker and gambler. He used to let the boys run loose at the track. One day the boys were running loose and met a short guy with a cigar and a whole group of hangers on. From that day forward the boys spent most days at the track in Jimmy Durante's box with the high rollers.

My brother found some old hobnail boots in the basement. Turns out one summer during college my dad's summer job was fighting forest fires in Idaho (he was a city boy from Chicago).

Most awesome: I've never known my dad to tell a lie. I've seen it cost him, plenty, but he seems incable of lying.

My dad was a Guinea Pig in 13 Atomic bomb tests, Jimi Hendrix opened for his Chicago Guitar Rock band "The Tornados" in the early 60's, and was a studio guitarist for years.
My mom had a nationally syndicated newspaper column, is an internationally published writer.

What a happy, wholesome thread and a nice link to go with it. Thanks subby.

My parents are awesome. After 30 years together, they are still playful and super cute together. I just love the story of how they met though. It was the late 70s in Japan, and my dad was lost in a subway station ('cause his Japanese sucked). My mom was coming home from school (she was an exchange student) and helped him out because she was fluent in Japanese. They started dating and married a few years later. Just a really cool chance meeting. Of course, in the 70s there weren't too many black people in Japan, so they probably would have found each other from a mile away.

/loves her parents to death
//both are quite morbid and quirky which is where I get it from

Me and my Uncle Jerry, circa 1987. Digging my brand new Interceptor. Closest thing I had to a parent. He was cooler than cool. Would take me for a ride on his '67 Triumph TT Special when I was just 4 or so. Got me Honda Minitrail when I was five, but Grandma figured he stole it and made him take it back.

Note about eight kinds of eighties horror and/or awesome, depending on how you look at it.

Oh, I'm actually third gen cool - my great-grandfather brought his family over on a boat from Europe. That's as cool as it gets for me personally!!! I have a photo of him circa 1933 at Union Station, but I can't find it right now. He just exudes cool in that photo.

My Dad wore green, pink, and powder blue suits, white leather shoes, drove a Cadillac Convertible and wanted to be a professional gambler for a living. The drinking that goes with this flash took him out pretty young.
Mom was cool before she knew it for growing up in different countries all over the world by the time she was 10. She's still cool!
PS-Mt stepfather was a race car driver, motocross racer, pilot, part owner of a gold mine, and an asshole through and through. He once crashed his plane and dragged himself across miles of California desert to dafety with two broken legs. Thats pretty goddamned cool even if he was a tool.
