31.something% efficacy - still a long way to go - still a great start

still no cure for cancer. But this is pretty good too. Good job all around.

Not surprised the Army is funding an HIV vaccine. They're the ones who made the virus in the first place.

Still no cure for cancer.

But who gives a fark when you can now enjoy cheap tricks under the downtown overpass again.

Goddamn can you imagine volunteering for that study?

Noooooooooo! We must do everything possible to block this vaccine, or young people will have sex! Young people shouldn't be having sex! Young people shouldn't do anything immoral! Young people need to get off of my lawn! Without the threat of the AIDS, young people will act with imputance, having sex, listening to their music, and stealing my Social Security! No socialism! Down with young people!

Only if they're Thai ladyboys! TFA implied it was specific to Thai virus strains only at this point, and unknown on your run-of-the-mill buttbugs.

Does the cure involve finely ground money?

GODDAMNIT!

I thought it was bad when I turned 14 and AIDS came long and shut down the sexual revolution, ending casual sex and free love for most of the country.

and now, when I'm finally off the market, they get a vaccine for AIDS?! I think God hates my penis.

Anyone involved in the creation/distribution of this vaccine will be going to hell. The homosexuals who spread this disease are meant to die. Do not play God.

2009-09-24 08:19:18 AM
Like most (all?) viruses, HIV has many strains. In other words, an HIV vaccine will be more like the flu vaccine, they will be able to protect you against some strains of HIV, but new strains will keep popping up that won't be affected.

Still, this is a huge step forward.

I guess an experimental HIV vaccine is a good idea.

Or you could just NOT inject yourself with drugs and restrain yourself from having butt sex.

But to each his own I suppose...

2009-09-24 08:25:59 AM
...er, no.

It reduced infection rates by 31%. The people in the trial all recieved information about avoiding infection and so the infection rate was small in any event. As a result there are also fairly significant error bars around that 31%.

To coin a phrase, 'HIV is a bugger'.

/Yes, double entendre intended

It's not socialism: It's military readiness. If AIDS wasn't fatal and/or debilitating and didn't effect military age people, they wouldn't farkin' care.

The military has been at the forefront of AIDS research ever since the 1980's, because it directly impacts their ability to do their mission. I remember getting AIDS tests back when I was in the military, especially the one on February 14th, 1988. Nothing like getting tested for a sexually transmitted disease on St. Valentines Day!

Let them complain. If an HIV vaccine is ever truly proven to be effective and released, it would save millions of future lives and possibly help save half a continent. The backlash against the hardcore wingnuts who proceed to fight against the vaccine will be epic.

Fun-fact: Homosexual relations is not the only way to contract HIV. I know of at least one medic that could be infected (don't know as of yet) thanks to a patient with HIV stabbing at them with their bloody keys (she tried to cut her own wrists with her house keys).

He's still waiting on the final tests to come through, and it's looking hopeful that he WASN'T infected, but it's a real bad situation for him.
