I'm stocking up on chocolates, whipped cream, champagne, wine, beer, scotch, rum, vodka, condoms, dried fruits, water, and hard drugs.

What? You think if the apocalypse comes you and your rifle are going to go all mad max and survive? And even if you do, you want to be among the few survivors in a barren wasteland?

Sorry, I will welcome the apocalypse in a drug-and-alcohol-fueled-orgy.

Anyone who tries to predict the future will be wrong on most, if not all, counts.

FlashHarry: god, it's like a republican wet dream!

Yeah, democrat voters will die in greater numbers than republican voters. It's win-win!

Obvious tag? That's a pretty much guaranteed result of population growth combined with decrease in water supplies. When you have politicians and Courts protecting the Delta Smelt rather than allowing that water to be used by cities and agriculture, then yes, things are going to get bad and the government isn't going to be helping it all.

Heh. I'm just saying. Look at our record on predicting the future. For every communications satellite and submarine there are countless predictions of Armageddon, rocket packs, boutique genetic engineering and malevolent nanobots, etc.

And yes, I do want my flying car, dammit.

Fark the flying car, I want a jetpack. It can be either powered by mysterious concentric circles or flames, I don't care which.

Shaggy_C: Peak oil, baby. We've already started the resource wars.

We just need to learn to make everything out of silicon and aluminum, because they make up 60% and 15% of the earth's crust, respectively. Iron makes up another 6% or so.

We're learning to make plastic substitutes from plants, fuel from algae... I am not as paranoid as you.

\just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you're wrong

I'd like one powered by fear or hope or both. Both would be preferable since it would operate in any political climate.

Tell me, how many acre-feet a year do you think federal environmental injunctions have cost water users? I'll give you a hint: Hannity is overestimating.

elchip: We're learning to make plastic substitutes from plants, fuel from algae... I am not as paranoid as you.

The question, of course - are we learning fast enough? Given the current rate of depletion of world oil fields coupled with the lack of innovation in terms of new vehicular technologies, I am extremely worried about where we will find ourselves in ten to twenty years. All the emphasis seems to be on increasing efficiency, which, contrary to popular belief, will only increase total energy consumption as it becomes more readily available.

I have two rifles, two pistols, plenty of ammo, dozens of blades, a couple of batons, taser, taser recharge pack, a baseball bat, and weak neighbors. I'm going to take over my apartment complex at the first sign of collapse. My girl and I will become the two-person population. I will be the Supreme Dictator of a square quarter-mile nation of Wolfakia.

Chief Export? Soylent Green.

Our "capitalistic" system simple is. not. sustainable.

Any system that relies on piling on debt after debt is. not. sustainable.
