Some of TFA is flat out wrong. For example, the Dog not learning guilt but acting submissive when the owner is angry. Our old dog would act like that before we found out what she did. So unless we were angry about something we didn't know yet....

Also, the "dogs are the only creatures that can understand a signal like a pointed finger other then humans".

Yes, after lots of trainign that nobody has tried much with any other animal. Except monkeys. People used to train them to do tricks on cues all the time (can fido steal a wallet?).

And contrary to TFA, they don't have that naturally, as anyone who's actually tired to train a dog understands. It has to be taught, as it does with humans. It's just taught in different ways sometimes- humans will pick it up from the society surrounding them, as will dogs if they're raised around other dogs. The teach each other things. But if you bring a puppy at a young age into a house with no dog, you have to teach the dog those things on your own.

In short, it's a 'dogs are great' article with very little actual scientific basis.

I don't think my dog cares that much about steak he seems just as happy with hamburger drippings over dry dog food. As long as he has something to eat he's happy.

got my Mom's dog after she checked out. Mom made me promise to take care of the dog ( miniature poodle ) if anything happened.
With no formal training (ask Mrs Dogboy) she was able to alert neighbors and lead rescuers to where she was.

/damn, I love that pooch. She is 13 now and has a bad toof ($700 -800) but well worth it.

That's the thing though- no formal training. They pick up on who to talk to and how to get people's attention very early on. It's the same process of learning that humans go through, but it's not just dogs. There are a lot of document incidents of cats doing similar things, or waking up owners in fires, or even dialing 911 (dogs have done this too, BTW).

Contrary to TFA, it's not just dogs who are smart. Anybody who's lived with multiple animals should be able to tell you that. Cats just aren't as good at the "put up with doing repeated tricks to prove it" part.

The plagiarism:
Wow, just wow... and not about the dogs, I've actually brought o up some of this stuff in conversation....

There was a special on a nature channel, same people involved (to be fair), even the Germans and Rico... this is like a DIRECT 1:1 rip of the special.

I think whoever "wrote" this article saw that special. I wish I remembered the name, but it's word for word that special.. .even the "Hey my dog can do that" comment...

Does it cite to the video source at all? Or is there a way of finding out.... because if this claims to be even the least bit original, the author should be fired.

Our dog started out as the dog from hell, but she's grown out of it. We still joke about it though.

It was hilarious to watch when we took in a rescue puppy for a few weeks and she had to put up with a puppy bugging her in the way she used to bug our older dog. What goes around comes around.

Dogs sometimes learn more useless things though. Our old dog learned how to work power windows.

From the time our dog was 8 weeks old, the only other animal he was around was our old ex-tomcat. At first, the cat just sized him up for a meal and constantly stalked him; we couldn't leave them alone together. As time went by, he grew and grew. he's 90 lbs, cat, less than 10. He and the cat patrol and mark the same territory every day and lay on the carpet together and groom themselves cat style. At night, they go into the woods and hunt together, you can sometimes see two pairs of bright yellow eyes reflecting the porchlight. The dog flushes varmints for the cat but never kills them himself. Seldom around other dogs, he'll play until annoyed then rear up and swat them cat style. It scares the hell out of them. I know he learned that from the cat because despite the size difference, if the cat raises a paw in threat,he's gone. He also has some other less obvious feline traits. But he does know where to go when I point!

The dog begs, the kitten diabolically snatches food from your plate. Both, however, would like steak.

Understanding a pointed finger may seem easy, but consider this: while humans and canines can do it naturally, no other known species in the animal kingdom can.

I seriously doubt that.

I have had other dogs. our German short haired pointer would sit and stare at a steak all night until she was told she could have it.
Would also check everyone on the trail while hiking. I got off the trail on purpose to try and fool her. didn't work, she led me be the hand and showed me the way without any coaching (i did know the way). What a great dog! Too bad some one shot her.

If the dog was shot because she was menacing them... then I'm sorry for your loss but I cannot really fault them.

But if your dog was shot out of malice or sadism, then I hope you shot the other person.

Who the hell shot her? And what did she do to provoke someone to shoot her?

No. She didn't do any thing that would provoke anyone. just passing thru, doing dog things. not a mean bone in that dog's body.
