I think there's a certain irony in claiming that postmodernist theory is the best tool to identify stupidity in others.

To repeat the joke I made the LAST time this was greenlit: "I'll bet they only offer degrees in law, journalism and political science." I'll add that the mod who approved this must be a graduate, since this was Boobiesed about three weeks ago.

Cool idea. Get liberal arts majors to sit around discussing Beavis and Micheal Moore.

Then you can have students from science schools come in and observe stupidity first hand through two way mirrors.

And that's it and that's the only thing I need, is this. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray and the course. And this paddle game, the ashtray and the course and the paddle game and that's all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the course, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, the course and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, and the course, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that's all I need. And that's all I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one - I need this. The paddle game, the course, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that's all I need. The ashtray, the course, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair.

Actually, I don't believe that any of the people you named are stupid. If they really believed the things that they post, yes they would be stupid. But the league of fail members that you mentioned has a more complex psychological disorder. They crave constant attention from any source they can get it from. What they have found here is a place where there are many liberal/moderate thinking people that they can easily tweak to get responses. All they need to do is open a Fark tab and a Freeper or Fox news tab and they are all set up to satiate their need to be constantly acknowledged as human beings.

This is why I have grown to despise the Fark troll. It's not really the stupid things that they post, it's the intellectual laziness. How hard is it to post one sentence nonsense off of another website? They show no creativity or imagination whatsoever. There hasn't been an original troll here since the days of RLSM and Skookum. At least those guys put some time and effort into it. Pretty much every post from the trolls here these days can be easily distilled down into some variation of "libtards suck".

In conclusion, me and my GED in Psychology submit that rather than being just simply stupid, the typical present day Fark troll actually suffers from pronounced Narcissistic Personality Disorder, with a heavy side dish of intellectual laziness. And probably really bad acne and/or herpes.

I don't think there is a tie-in between smart/pretentious. In fact, a lot of dumb people are pretentious and solemn in an attempt to give weight to their ideas through solemnity that they couldn't give those ideas by actually thinking.

Um, yeah, does that matter if an unhappy person can cure polio or invent the computer or camera or raise children properly? What does that have to do with "pretension"?

Being smart is important.

Bah. Sounds more like a course where the professor is trying to be shocking and popular, and the students are looking for easy credit.

Three hours a week discussing movies is scholarship? Seems to me that if you spend three hours a week discussing intelligent people and their works, then identifying stupid people would be a trivial exercise to be left to the reader.

FTFA

"And while others who commented suggested that a course in stupidity was an implicit liberal attack by Democrats on Republicans, the student said that politics "can never be removed from a class, whether it is biology or history. But this professor refused to reveal his political bias, and I found it hard to determine the way he leaned. This class addresses politics, but it is not meant to be any sort of political brainwashing."

This is the Republicans pretty much admitting they're stupid.

"OMG It's a class on stupidity! They're referring to US!"
