Good news for lonely women and their over-friendly dogs,
Bad news for surprise birthday party guests in next room.

Can't say I thought Nutella was all that.... it's ok, though.
As for the article, it boggled my mind that 1.5million people have developed allergies to peanuts. Craziness.
/wonders exactly who did what to spark the creation of the allergy to peanuts. My pseudo-deep/big thought for the day.

2003-03-10 05:50:20 PM
I have a great idea. DON'T EAT THEM!

Stage-whisper to Maveno: "Read the Article..."

2003-03-10 05:52:01 PM
I didn't bother to read the article, but my question what the He** has caused so many people to be allergic to peanuts? When I was kid, everyone at PB&J and PB&Banana and PB&Mayo (don't knock unless you've tried it) and I don't think I've ever met anyone allergic to nuts. COCONUT - yes, but not nuts.

2003-03-10 05:52:37 PM
I guarantee you eating my nuts won't give you any side effects but bling bling in your thing thing.

2003-03-10 05:53:22 PM
We need to cure the allergy to the French. Or avoid them altogether.

2003-03-10 05:53:42 PM
I am allergic to peanuts. I developed this allergy as an adult (age 30!).

Peanuts, as the article pointed out, are REALLY hard to avoid (did you *read* the article, Maveno?).

For those of you making fun, you wouldn't think it was so funny if it'd happened to you -- my face and tongue swelled up, and I wound up in the ER in the middle of the night -- I was on an antihistmine drip for four hours (with a side order of a very painful shot of EPI) to make sure I didn't suffocate.

2003-03-10 05:53:57 PM
Mmmmmmmmmm.... Nutella.

Hazelnutty, chocolatty goodness. Think I know what's for dinner.

2003-03-10 05:54:28 PM
I think the generally accepted reason for the increase in peanuts allergies is that peanut oils and derivatives are vastly more common in foods than they used to be. Young children are frequently exposed to large quantitaties of the relevant protein before their developing immune systems can cope. This causes hypersensitivity via a set of mechanisms about which I know fark all.

Someone who cares more may wish to check this.

I wonder how many "eat my man nuts" jokes we'll get off of this article. . .

Good.
Now maybe the kids in my local school district can bring peanut butter sandwiches to school again. They were banned because the parents of one genetic reject were concerned that their little Einstein might eat something another kid gave him.

2003-03-10 05:56:53 PM
I_Can't_Believe: So, you're calling me a genetic reject?

You watch your mouth, boy.

2003-03-10 05:57:23 PM
No, but seriously.

YAY! My 7 yo niece (who I have never met yet, because she lives far away in a strange country - Canada) is allergic to peanuts. Anything that looks like it might help sounds great to me.

So what is it that leaps out of the article at me?

Final testing has been halted because three companies are in court squabbling over rights to the treatment

FARKWITS Fight later you assholes. There are people dying out there.

For anyone who says I didn't read the article. No, I DIDN'T read this article. And I still say, "Don't eat them!!!"

I read this article about the farking topic.

I_Can't_Believe_It's_Not_Smegma: Thing is, in sometimes it's not as simple as that. In extreme cases the smell alone can cause a reaction, and also if any oil is left on such things as a keyboard.

2003-03-10 06:04:04 PM
Someone say nuts?

2003-03-10 06:04:33 PM
Smegma - that was harsh, man.

Maveno: your link doesn't work, but speaking from *first-hand experience* I just have to say: you are remarkably and oddly proud of your ignorance.

I'm outta here.

Nutella is the best stuff on Earth. It's a spread (really popular in Europe, btw) that you eat on croissants and rolls and what not.

Is it just me or have these peanut allergy cases exploded in the past few years.
A kid can;t bring PB&J to school because they might touch the doorknob then a kid with peanut allegry might touch that same doorknob then that kid might get oil on them and the kid could die....
Crap, if it is that bad wouldn;t the kid eventually somewhere run into peanuts? What about the Chinese food fast food place at the mall cooking with peanut oil, would those fumes kill someone?

...this allergy is crazy shiat but serious it is out of hand

2003-03-10 06:13:52 PM
Peanuts are actually beans, not nuts. Nut that it really matters.

Don't know if it would kill them, though I guess the potential would be there. The person has to modify their life around it. I don't have a peanut allergy, but I had a temp working for me that did. It was dumbfounding listening to her stories of the way she had to alter her lifestyle, and avoid things like malls, but she had no choice.

Ooh, 'assholes' didn't get filtered. I thought it would.

Smegma, Maveno If you can't say nothin' nice, don't say nothin' at all.

I knew this guy who had an allergy to almonds. He was an ass to everybody. I happened to have some almond soap....

Good times, good times.

2003-03-10 06:27:53 PM
Rhiannon I agree you would have to modify your life, I have a good friend who has a crazy peanut allergy but next to living in a bubble you would think eventually, somewhere you will run into peanut oil/dust/pieces.
I guess that is why they made eppy pens and 911 speed dial

I knew a kid one time who was so allergic to peanuts that no one could touch him after eating anything with peanuts in it. The way they found this out was one time his mom ate some peanuts and a few minutes later picked him up to put him in his crib. When she went in to check on him later, he had red hand-shaped blotches on his sides.

2003-03-10 06:31:44 PM
Food allergies can be very serious and some people are unbelievably sensitive.

There was one kid in grade school who was violently allergic to fish so naturally the other kids decided to play a joke and put a piece of fish in his sandwich. The kid took a bite and somehow knew there was fish in it and spat it out *immediately*. Still, it was enough to make his tongue swell up and go into shock. Could have died. Not pretty.

To Maveno who sez "Well just dont eat them", it's not that people with nut allergies say "Hey, here's a peanut on the table! I'm going to put it into my mouth even though I might die". They are so sensitive, even the slightest trace of nuts which you or I couldnt possibly detect would be enough to severely affect them.

Stompn_Tom: Yeah this girl just had one eppy and we made her get another to keep in the first aid box in case we couldn't find her purse. If I remember she was around 30 and hadn't had an incident since her late teens, so she was doing something right.

2003-03-10 06:35:04 PM
In the case of the temp worker we had, we required all staff who may consume peanut products during their lunch (whicj would be outside of the office of course), to bring toothpaste and a brush. They were all quite happy when her contract ended.

2003-03-10 06:35:12 PM
Sorry to sound ignorant, but what is an eppy?

2003-03-10 06:41:36 PM
It's a spring powered needle that injects epinephrine to stop the allergic reaction

I was going to say that it used to be that if you had a peanut alergy, you died. Then you didn't pass on your inferior no peanut handling genes to your offspring.
