How about a pathological distrust of intellectuals and the scientific community, fueled in large part by religious conservatives and revisionists, as well as poor parenting?

There's that fag talk we talked about.

Actually, most Southerners see a lot of black people, and statistically that region of the country is fairly intergrated. The midwest, however is incredibly segregated and one could make a case that Indiana and Chicago taught America how to hate.

Even leaving that aside, it is utterly shameful that the kids in Oklahoma schools are that goddamn ignorant. Yes, I know inner city kids are also that ignorant, but don't change the subject: bad things happen when you try to make creationism part of the curriculum

Here's what I think probably happened; These gets get told, "Hey, you wanna take this ten question quiz? It doesn't get graded officially, and doesn't go on your permanent record."

Kid says "Sure." He looks at the questions, sees how easy they are, and decides to mess with the testers. My uncle did something like that in high school, and he said the whole school did exactly the same thing.

BleedPinstripes: Dr.Zom:

This shiat really pisses me off. My father was a product of the OKC public school system in the 1940s and he and his friends all went on to become intelligent capable adults (my dad and his two best friends from grade school through HS all went to law school, for example.) My mother is from Shawnee OK, a tiny town not much bigger than a Quick Trip and she got a first class education as well. And then somewhere along the line, everything in Oklahoma went to shiat.

I blame the fundies. And the brain drain. Caused by the fundies.

Who are the bigger idiots? The kids screwing with pollsters, or the people who believe them?

I would be willing to give these kids the benefit of the doubt if I hadn't been to Oklahoma a dozen times in the last decade.

Sticky Hands: High school students....

I'm sure each and every response was carefully considered to the best of the child's ability and never was an answer given purely for the lulz.

I doubt it. Otherwise, you'd have way more "Michael Jackson" for first president votes; and far far fewer "Don't Know" responses.

These kids really, truly DON'T KNOW American history or civics. Which is both sad and scary.

If you can't answer those 10 questions correctly by the time you are in high school I'm telling you now to get out. I'm giving your job to an 'illegal'. (Although if you answered the ocean one wrong because of Smirkle's argument I'll give you that one. The point farthest east in a state is in Alaska if that sort of trivia interests you.) We will be rounding up your teachers to have them shot.

Good God. My seventh-graders would score better on all of those questions than these Oklahoma teenagers.

Which is even more sad when you consider that my seventh-graders are French and live in the ghetto.

I don't usually comment in political type threads, but man, I gotta say that sound arguments and good policy become really irrelevant if you're the one defining the terms of debate:

I don't put much stock in this. Having been a high school student as well as raising several chances of many of those incorrect answers being deliberately incorrect are pretty damn high.

For those clamoring that omgsocialism it's the government school's fault: those two dozen or so countries that make American snowflakes look retarded in comparison every year, countries like Sweden, Norway, Germany, how is it real socialists can run schools?

Maybe it's the farking religious zealots who insist dogma by taught in place of science? Johnny doesn't know trig but boy he sure knows his creationism. I'm sure that'll help him get a good paying job.

Get sick and tired of people railing against the public school system.

Personally, I think if you say the problem with education in America is the "public school system", and the only solution is "private schools", it's fairly obvious NO school system will cure you of the stupidity that infects you.

And anything else you say is automatically clouded with doubt over your ability to think.

2009-09-16 08:27:00 PM
As an add-on to the headline, 0% of News9 reporters and editors know the difference between "to access students' basic civic knowledge" and the verb to assess. I doubt these adults could have passed the English literacy portion of the citizenship test. My immigrant mother could do better.

2009-09-16 08:27:21 PM
The scary part is like Idiocracy.

The 20% who have a clue will have 1.8 kids each. The rest of the dumb farks, yes you're a dumb fark if you don't know who the first PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES is, will have 4.3 kids.

I will brag, when I was in 9th grade, my parents could no longer help me with my math homework. But come on you dumb farks, I propose a new law: If, by the age of 13 you can not name the first president of the United States of America, or the last Major League baseball player to win the Triple Crown, you get sterilized.

Highschool, we could design a nuclear power plant.
But that was just one good school.
Unfortunatly, schools really suck in PA anymore.

OMG, I went to that one!

Didn't do nuclear power, though, I took the easy shot and designed a lock system for the Three Rivers that would have increased efficiency by 45% if constructed.

And yeah, PA sucks now. But they're still better than WV.

I hate to stick up for any portion of humanity, as I subscribe to the George Carlin theory, but many of these answers show obvious and deliberate intent behind them.

If you pick Lincoln over Washington, sure you might just be an idiot. But most of the answers were meant to be funny, and are even tied to current events. The Obama/Michael Jackson/Communist/Indian ocean answers (among others) actually show effort.

Ever notice how we pretty much gauge our sense of worth against the, to us at least, "OBVIOUSLY INFERIOR ASPECTS OF" ( insert school, state, city, favourite bar here ) ?

That sort of reeks of desperation, dunnit?

1. The Masonic Code
2. The Ten Commandments
3. The Bureaucratic & the Idiotic
4. Thirteen (Because there were 13 colonies)
5. Moses
6. The Indian Ocean (Duh, that's why they are called Indians)
7. The Superbowl and the Oscars Parties (there are more birthday parties, but only if you count all the days together.)
8. They serve until they lose all their chips
9. Peyton Randolph
10. Some Kenyan

Did none of you go to high school? Those survey results tell me that only about 30% of the kids took it seriously, and the rest just answered "Don't Know" or put some dumb shiat in without even reading the question. The reason the immigration test scores are so much higher is that every one of them is taking it very seriously.

Discounting the bullshiat tests where only 2-3 questions were right (probably through multiple guess luck), you actually have a pretty high pass rate, with only three questions showing significant miss rates (Who wrote the Dec., # of justices, and senate terms).

1/ What is the supreme law of the land.
"Emancipation proclamation 3%"

Thats a little weird, even for OK, but hey, OK

2/ What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution ?
"The ten commandments"

Thought for sure that would have been higher :-) way to go OK

3/ What are the two parts of the US Congress ?
"Don't know 58%"

Sounds fair.

4/ How many Justices are on the Supreme Court ?
.... lots of numbers and 31 % dont know

OK, I did not know that one (I am not from here, I am still learning, I know now... the answer is "Don't Know"

5/ Who Wrote the Declaration of Independence ?
"Michael Jackson 2%"

is it on display in neverland ? or was that part of the early stuff lost.

6/ What ocean is on the east coast of the United States ?
"Indian 3 %"

wtf ?!? how did they know there was an Indian Ocean ?!?

7/ What are the two major political parties in the United States ?
"Communist and Republican 11%"

hehehe, ok that was expectable

8/ We elect a US Senator for how many years ?
"Four 17%"

That's what I would have answered, thanks kids.

9/ Who was the first president of the United States ?
"Abraham Lincoln 18%"

When we first moved here (to California first, then on to Oregon), I had to argue this one with his pre-school teacher (errrrr off the top of my head, wasnt he 16th ?, Ill google it later). Fortunately we had just visited the Washington monument, so my four year old son knew better.

10/ Who is in charge of the Executive Branch ?
"The President 29%"

Not bad - I would have expected that one to be harder
(anyways, I thought it was Cheney ?!? ya mean the election removed him ?!? I was waiting for the exorcism)

Hawai'i is singular. The question referred to the United States, which is clearly plural.

Hey, lame unfunny farkhead, you're aware that Obama isn't mentioned in that article, right?

As for high school students thinking that blacks aren't American...

Who are America's greatest heroes? When 2,000 high school students across the United States were asked this question-excluding presidents and presidents' wives-Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman headed the list. The only living American to make the top 10 was Oprah Winfrey, who ranked seventh.

I think maybe a lot of those kids were punking the test (high schoolers? NAH!) I mean, come on... I know people are stupid, but do they REALLY think either George W. Being from Oklahoma, this doesn't surprise me, but makes me want to facepalm. I don't know if they teach it in other states, but when I was in middle school, a required class for all of us Civics. As far as I know, it is not taught at any Oklahoma public school now. This was where you learned all of this important stuff. We took a tour of the courthouse and got to sit in on jury selection, even got to have our own mock trial in class. Took a field trip to OKC and got to sit in on a legislative session as well.
