Women's poker events are a marketing tool. The goal is nothing more than to encourage more women to play poker. They are trying to create an environment that is a little friendlier for ladies to play in. I wouldn't even say a woman wouldn't want to enter a regular tournament because they're intimidated by all the guys. It is far more likely they wouldn't enter because it looks gross. Most poker tables are surrounded by several sad sacks of shiat, and one or two actual humans.
They are trying to create an environment that more women would actually enjoy playing in (to the long term benefit of the game), not level the playing field.

No woman in her right mind would come near you.

Pxtl: My only problem with this story is that the guy didn't take the cancer patient up on her request to split the pot and call it a game.

I mean, he didn't have to, but it would have been classier. This guy is obviously a sleaze...

but he's also right. "Women only" is supposed to be as dead as "Men only", outside of the bathrooms. Besides that, if the purpose of the tourney is to be newbies only, don't you think it's kind of
a) presumptuous that all women are newbs, and
b) unfair to male newbs?

c) strange that a newbie poker tournament would have a prize fund over $30k

smells_like_meat: Podmore: It's interesting that some people are saying that women should be allowed to have women-only tournaments for cash prizes. The reason they're not is because men-only tournaments were found to be discriminatory. I'm guessing the discussion would be different if it were a black guy crashing a white-only tournament (and vice versa).

My dad was in the rotary club when they were forced to stop being a men's club and allow women. Interestingly, the people who had the biggest problem with it weren't the men in the club; it was their wives, who didn't want their husbands hanging out with other women.

There are no men's only tourneys. Never has been. Anyone withthe money to buy in has always been welcome, if just for their contribution to the prize pool. However the typical tourney has only about a 5% participation of women. I consider woman's tourneys to be special events. Let them have their fun. The tourneys run by LIPS are more like a bachelorette party with cards. Men who play in woman's tourneys have the legal right to, however it's just a macho power play.

Or a chance to pick up a nice prize pot. Professional poker players play mainly to make a living. They don't do this by playing in the hardest tournaments they can find, they do it by picking soft tournaments with nice prize pots.

I don't buy the crap about "for new players", "ladies night", "just a bit of fun". The game had a prize pot running into tens of thousands of dollars. If there's serious money to be won, then the game will attract serious players who are mainly there for a payoff, not to have a fun night. Hence the final round being contested by 2 professionals.

Why do we need a "women only" poker event?

I can understand say sports segregated by gender, but Poker? What biological advantage would men have to make such segregation warranted?

Came to say This. The way to stop professionals turning up to an amateur event is to have a prize pot that isn't worth their while. Still kinda douchey for a pro to compete but it sounds like he wasn't the only one, so also kinda douchey of this author to single him out.

It would be one thing if this guy came in and won at an all-women arm-wrestling contest, but for cryin' out loud, this is POKER.

And you all know that if anyone were to hold a high-stakes poker tourney open only to men, the howls of enraged protest would be deafening.

Much like people of any race can be racist, people of either gender can be sexist.

littlett's: Alex Chilton: littlett's: What an asshole.

So I can assume you would call a woman who tried to enter an all-male poker tournament a biatch too, right?

Under those circumstances, yes.

Mykeru: Alex Chilton: littlett's: What an asshole.

No, that's different™. Let me anticipate Littlett's well-considered response to your attempt to impose consistency: You're gay, you don't get laid, you're bitter and you just want to get in her pants.

In fact, let's start a pool: Is Littletts going to go for the "gay" gambit, the "bitter" canard or impugn Alex's ability to get laid?

/Add "You're angry at women" and "You're whining" and we can play bingo.

pwnd. your a idiot.

tsalaroth: pwnd. your a idiot.

Perhaps, but at least I know the difference between the possessive "your" and the contraction "you are" and the proper use of the indefinite forms "a" or "an".

A three word sentence and "idiot" is the only word you got right.

/No doubt from sheer repetition, douche-nozzle.

Hey buddy, I love you and all, but seriously, what part of you thought that this didn't warrant a NSFW somewhere in the post? Bad form, keep it up.
