Why is this on the politics page?

I can't even imagine any scenarios in which this turns into a flamewar.

I'll post, since the very act of my doing so creates a flame war most of the time.

It works okay here in Portland. Up to 3 hens per household, no roosters allowed. We have a few. They eat bugs and kitchen scraps and don't require a lot of maintenance.

Also, places that don't allow gardening on lawns, like Whitefish Bay (kind of part of Milwaukee), suck and deserve the eventual urban decay that will befall them because of their complete lack of common sense and foresight.

I'm assuming they require a half an acre before you can have a chicken.

If I had a house, I would totally have a couple hens... I love eggs and would like to spend less money on them, especially since fresh eggs are supposed to be awesome.

2009-09-13 01:38:54 AM
This is just a movement by a bunch of smelly hippies wanting more locally grown "organic" raised chickens running around town shiatting all over the sidewalks and making the city seem like a third world country. What they fail to realize is that most of their poultry is already "local". Hell, within an hours drive there are dozens of Tyson owned chicken and turkey farms that are just overflowing with delicious poultry, all grain fed and happy. Even more conveinent, there are a couple of processing plants in the area that provide jobs to the immigrant community at the expense of the white middle class male, who we all know these granola eating local grown organic eaters hate anyway.

/that might do it

Yeah, exactly. One half acre per chicken. That could easily be interpreted as not less than one half acre per chicken, and probably is. Are you trying to put the small stones of falsitude into your gizzard of truth?

/sorry, I don't commonly use slashies or chicken analogies. Both are a sign of rhetorical weakness, so it may be a stretch.

The ordinance around here is no more than 10 chickens, no roosters. We built a coop, mail ordered the beasts, expecting eggs in a couple of months.

The eggs will be bribes for the neighboors, the chickens eat everything in their path so I dont have to weed the lawn or worry about bugs. The kids love them and the chickens are cheap.

All this in the urban sprawl.

/Wife gave them names
//Now they are 'pets'

Where I live we have a very sensible bylaw about owning poultry, and indeed livestock, within the city limits. Other than bees you can have whatever you want, so long as you don't fark off your neighbours. I have a rooster but he's locked up at night and let out at a socially acceptable hour, the neighbours get the occasional box of eggs from the girls and everyone's happy.

Some of us don't want to live next to ma and pa kettle. Having once lived next to some fat stupid white trash piece of human manure who kept several chickens on his 3/4th acre parcel, I can attest that the chickens were annoying as fark.

In my neighbor's bunch, there was an alpha female that was aggressive towards the other chickens. As a result, they were constantly fighting, making a great deal of noise. Starting at 5AM. Also, when the wind was just right in the summer, I also got to enjoy the smell. Since I lived in a state where A/C is uncommon, I got to enjoy the smell inside my home.

Want livestock? Move to the farking countryside.
