I was just wondering the other day about the Anthrax suspect who died from Tylenol overdose. Seems strange, you wouldn't get sick and heave it up before it kills you ?

And since Obama is from Chicago, this is all Obama's fault, or this has rubbed off on him and he's a killer, or something... *yawn*

True story, my mom almost died of an aspirin overdose. This was in the 1970s. She was having some kind of pains, I don't recall what it was, I was just a kid at the time. Her doctor told her to take 5 aspirin every 2 hours.

Couple of days later she was damn near dead and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance. I guess they fixed her up okay, because she's still alive. But she now has a severe allergy to aspirin.

She could have sued the dumbass doctor for malpractice, but that wasn't very common back in those days, so she just let it go.

Wow, that's an insane amount of aspirin. I'm thinking that maybe the directions were written wrong, and it should have been 2 aspirin every 5 hours.

In this guys case though, it was suicide. In your mom's case, she inadvertently ingested probably 100 or so in a 48 hour span.

This guy did it all at once, and the word "accident" is not coming to mind.

Years ago, I went out with a girl who's mom commited suicide.
Apparently, at first, the mom tried some nonsensical method
I forget what it was (something like slitting her wrists while watching TV), but the wise ass ambulance attendant told her "hey, if you want to kill yourself, just swallow a bottle of aspirin".

The next day, that's what happened.

GOPers should follow same example. Kill yourselves you dickless cave dwellers.

Blood thinning drugs and herbs can be dangerous. I knew someone whose mother was from Eastern Europe and her remedy for any illness was to eat raw garlic. She ate 3 entire bulbs one day after eating a bulb a day for almost a week. And she ended up in the hospital, blood thinned too much and body rather fragrant.

He brings ibuprofen, you bring benadryl.
He sends one of yours to Walgreens, you send one of his to CVS.

Aspirin doesn't kill by thinning the blood. It does do that to some extent, which is why it's recommended for folks with certain heart conditions to have a small amount each day.

It kills by causing the liver to fail, which can take a couple of days. A couple of days of agony and the doctor telling you "no, sorry, there really isn't anything much we can do"

I tried to commit suicide by overdosing on Marijuana and it didn't work, so I refuse to believe some over the counter medicine people use everyday could be more harmful than marijuana which is Schedule 1.

Or of course that could just be the crap I was fed by some health worker. Wikipedia (that oh-so reliable source) gives a mortality rate for acute aspirin poisoning at 2%, with a variety of countermeasures available.

Or like hitting yourself 32 times in the head with a hammer (including hitting yourself on the left side of your head despite being right handed)?

Damn fine police work there, Lou.

Gothnet

Sounds like you're confusing aspirin with Tylenol (acetaminophen). The latter has been linked to complete liver failure, especially where the liver has already been hammered (e.g. by alcoholism).

I just thought the dangerous part of blood thinning too much was people got woozy or passed out while driving or doing dangerous stuff.

I RTFA and (from the flimsy evidence given) I would look at the "girlfriend". The guy calls her to tell her he's taken pills; she then drives him to a hospital that can't treat him, drops him off and calls police. The hospital, meanwhile, has to transport him to ANOTHER hospital, by which point it's too late.

I did a rough calculation to see how many aspirin I would have to take to hit the LD50.

~195lbs using 525mg aspirin pills.

Over 300 pills to get a 50% kill rate. That takes some commitment, baby.

I knew a guy in high school that tried to kill himself with an iron pill OD. Didn't work, but his liver was farked.

Slow, painful death.

I thought most of the suicide attempts using pills were more like cries for help. If you're serious you eat a bullet.

Pills don't always work.

I know of a cardiac surgeon that only gives Acetaminophen (after surgery)for CABG's (by-pass graphs). It's painful and a bit crazy, but works. Hold the pillow and cough your lungs out without worry of bleeding out. You learn to control every muscle in your body and are on the road to a healthier new you. If you don't figure out how to control then you just hurt like hell.

In the "Aspirin alone" category, 63 people died in 2007. (source: 2007 AAPCC Annual Report: Table 18) Link to get pdf file (new window)
