FTFA: binge drinking was defined as at least four or five drinks in a row.

In a row of what? A day? OMG you had a six-pack, you must be a farking drunk!

Drinking a fifth of Johnny Walker a day? You might have problem. Slamming a six-pack? Uhhh... no. We fought this war already. Eliot Ness says have a drink, it's legal.

This. It was all the alcoholism of later adulthood, minus any common sense.

Irrelevant study.

FTFA: "Clearly the work is not over, because what has been done so far has not put a dent in the problem," Nelson said in a statement.

Sure, youth are still binge drinking (feign surprise here), but I'd like to see a study comparing related injuries/deaths. That would be a better indicator if things are improving.

Youth are going to drink/smoke/snort/whatever no matter what laws are in effect.

I think it was within 2 hours - so yeah - if you want to keep the action going on your pet project set the definition of "bad" so incredibly low that nearly all of society has your problem and teh bucks just keep rolling in.

Next up is 0.05 or lower BAC as "drunk driving" so we can arrest everyone who's had a beer any where within 3 hours before driving a car. ZOMG! we're all drunk drivers!

Bingo. The prohibitionists at MADD have been using this tactic for years. Hell, if you read the article carefully, you'll note "37 percent of students said they had driven after drinking". Not "drunk", but "after drinking".

Drink one beer and drive home? You're in the same category as the sloshed driver with a 0.20 BAC.

Why do they keep studying this? College kids have been drinking since there were colleges in this country. In any activity you'll have those who do it more than others. Those whose nature it is to overdo something will either learn how to do it better or not. Outlawing and prosecuting those who use it doesn't work, people still do it. So any kind of intervention is unlikely. So what are they trying to discover?

2009-09-12 09:17:09 AM
I never binge drank in college. I saved that for when I had to work in a call centre.

Blowmonkey: So what are they trying to discover?

Nothing. They get more funding by proving there is a "problem". They get to push prohibitionist agenda, and politicians who approve of these studies get to say they are doing something to curb the rampart alcohol abuse that is destroying our children.

I challenge those prohibitionists at MADD to find me one person who drinks and hasn't had five or more at a time.

All I came here to say is how important it is to do this stuff while in college. The college experience was sort of ruined for me since I was working at least 3 jobs trying to pay for it because of stupid financial aid loop hole I fell into. Never had any fun at all. In 4 years. Now out of college at 27 Im trying to do the stuff I should have been doing and my married friends trying to have babies are looking at me strange.

The US definition of 'binge drinking' was defined by the neo-prohibitionists at MADD so it's a useless standard. Most civilized societies define binge drinking as 8 or even 9 drinks at a time.

Yeah, my college experience as well. Sucks to be working or studying while everyone of your peers is throwing up and getting laid all the time.

Indeed. Of course, I do not wear low cut clothes. My chest hair would be far too distracting.

Nice thing about doing the going out and partying later in life is you have more money for nicer places, the chances of meeting someone who will not wake up in their own vomit on your living room floor is greater, and most of the frat guys and party girls are fat and married and you never have to be anywhere near them again. Also, the drama level is greatly decreased.

27 is too young to be old and married in my opinion. So is 31.

What's really fun is spending all your spare time in the computer lab or library because talking to other people is so boring you'd rather do nothing but read and play games.

If you actually think that "studying" = "socially awkward," then I think I now know why as many as 30% of Americans call themselves Republicans. And why we have been reduced to a debtor nation to China.

There was a study done on a few island resorts where there are plenty of monkeys. Tourists would leave their drinks hanging around and monkeys, being monkeys, would snatch them up. Interesting thing though, was that researchers found that over the years the percentage of monkeys who would binge drink versus the monkeys who would just drink a little to those who would never touch alcohol correlates perfectly to the percentage of humans who often binge drink, sometimes drink, and never touch it.

And a drunk monkey never went cold sober, and a cold sober monkey never went drunk. Also, another interesting thing was that monkeys who liked to drink were more adventurous (even when sober) and where the higher ranking (more popular) monkeys in their little monkey tribe.

/wishes I could find that study, I think I saw it on NOVA
