Gave me the chills just reading those old comments as everything happened in real time.

I remember I was taking a test in high school when it happened, when in the middle of the test another teacher stepped into our classroom and whispered something to our teacher that none of us could hear. I'll never forget the look that came across his face before they both turned and left in a hurry. We figured someone close to our teacher had died, and went about finishing the test. About 20 minutes later, our teacher returned, looking more despondent than any person I have ever seen in my life. I remember the beginning of the sentence he spoke, "Listen, everybody... Something's happened in New York City...." just before the TV was turned on, and from then on I could only think of how I was standing beneath those two towers only 3 weeks prior, while on vacation visiting family in New York City. I was awed by their immense size, staring up at them from their base. As cliche as it might have been, I even snapped a photo looking upward that had a good shot of both towers almost bending towards the sky. I fell in love with that city when I went there, and seeing what happened to it that day is something I will never forget. Those images are permanently burned into my mind, as I am sure they are burned to all of yours. What a sad day.

That is definitely worth re-reading every year.

What a day that was. Thank God we caught that Bin Laden fella.

Bathia_Mapes: I got chills just reading those comments.

Me too.

On a side note:
Looking back nine years later is was kinda funny to see someone actually trolled the 9-11 thread.

I did bad math 2009-2001=9 years for some reason.

Nah I knew that. It's a habit of mine to drive down on base each week and point and laugh at the people planting the memorial trees.

At 8:45am this day 8 years ago, I was sitting on the beach in Rehoboth Beach,
Delaware with my wife, watching the sun rise in an utterly cloudless blue
sky.

We then went to the Harry & David outlet, where we saw the footage of the
WTC on fire.

I don't think I've been able to eat Moose Munch happily since.

/Will be listening to Hendrix's STAR SPANGLED BANNER and Billy Joel's MIAMI 2017 this morning at 8:45

If the weather was as bad on 9/11/01 as it is today here in NY, would the hijackers still have been able to carry out the attacks?

RogerDodger: If the weather was as bad on 9/11/01 as it is today here in NY, would the hijackers still have been able to carry out the attacks?

The hijackers had pretty limited flying skills, so I doubt they could handle flying by instruments. There would have been a 9/12 instead.

I was walking down in on the first floor of my building, when I passed two older women who worked there. One said something like, "The first one just collapsed." I figured she was talking about a couple of sick people, or something.

Our classes went on as normal, but I remember making note of it in the margin of my notebook. At first they said the National Mall was hit, but later, after the hysteria settled a bit, they clarified that it was only the WTC and the Pentagon, with a fourth plane downed in a Pennsylvania field.

*shrug* Life goes on, I guess. But it's amazing how clear one's memory can be when something tremendous happens.

September 11, I was trolling the internet looking for information about what was going on and somehow ended up on Fark. I had never seen or heard about this site before that day and spent the next hours watching the TV and reading this web site.
It is hard to believe that was eight years ago.

2009-09-11 07:58:57 AM
I read this a couple of years ago but I want to read it when I get home today - it is too sad to read at work right now...

2009-09-11 08:02:54 AM
I can't believe that was 8 years ago already. Wow.

2009-09-11 08:03:59 AM
i don't think i'll ever forget a single detail about that day.

2009-09-11 08:13:09 AM
Those threads marked the day I first started lurking. Fark was pretty much the only website that was up. We didn't actually wheel out a TV in my office until just be fore the second tower collapse, so up until then, the threads were literally my only source of information.

2009-09-11 08:14:40 AM
Wow, the thread that, to me, put Fark on the map. Have a great day everyone.

2009-09-11 08:21:42 AM
I remember that day like it was yesterday.
I had just gotten up, made myself some coffee and was smoking a bowl while listening to talk radio (hey, first year of college, give me a break). I heard that there had been a plane accident in NY, so I turned on the TV, thinking I had to call my friends who worked in Manhattan later.

Turned on the TV, watching this. I had just finished the bowl and the cup of coffee. I had just gotten up from the couch, was about to get a refill of each and... my mind went blank. The second plane had just hit the other tower live on television. It was such a punch in the gut that I literally fell backward on the couch. Never sobered up as fast before either. I spent the rest of the day reading that thread on Fark while listening to the TV news and frantically trying to reach everyone I knew in New York.

/so, I can safely say... Have you ever experienced 9/11 on weed??

"Phwoar!!! That CG looks incredible! What movie is this?"

Did Ken ever make it back to the apartment?

2009-09-11 09:34:25 AM
I was a senior in High School. In Government class at 9:03am. We were watching tv at 9:04 when the second plane hit. I have never heard 35 seniors suddenly go silent before. I remember thinking "Are we in a war now?" I was 17 years old.

2009-09-11 10:26:38 AM
I was getting ready to go to my summer job as a bank teller and was toweling myself off when my sister screamed and I ran into the front room just a few seconds after the second plane hit the tower. I'll never forget that moment or that day.

It was a clear declaration of war by fundamentalist Islam fanatics against the United States on that day. I think that, despite the tactical success of 9/11, those fundamentalist fanatics probably should rue the day they did that, for its been all downhill for them since then.

I was 18.... and wondered what that was going to mean for people our age

i had also heard anecdotes of people that day going to the recruitment office

I was sick at home, lying in bed. My brother came in to tell me what happened and I told him to stop farking with me because I was sick. He just told me to turn on the TV, any channel, and left.

I go back and read that thread every once in a while. Scary stuff.

"This is Ken's roommate. He is currently stuck downtown in the midst of a bomb threat on the Empire State Building.

He will update you when he makes it back to the apartment."

Anyone know whatever happened to Ken?

See there are some parts I block out for a reason, and I don't need to be reminded of them.

I remember getting up around 5AM. While eating breakfast I turned on the TV, and Fox News was reporting that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. They showed a big gaping hole, and there was very little information at the time. For some reason, I just assumed it was a horrible accident.

During my commute, the station I was listening to said that a second plane had crashed into the other tower. I quickly realized it wasn't an accident.

My old office was close to the airport, and you would constantly see commercial aircraft in the sky. During the "no fly" rule, it was creepy to see an empty sky up above.

Can't we just move the fark on people!

2009-09-11 11:03:43 AM
I remember one guy coming in to work and saying ... something just hit one of the towers in new york or something. And then us using the really crappy internet with really crappy pictures that made no sense especially when they started talking about the towers collapsing and just showing these huge clouds of grey. And then our boss actually having the assholeness to say get back to work we need to get that software release out. To which I pointed out to him that our American clients might not be so happy to see that we were more concerned about getting a software release out then anything else. Considering we had more then a few clients in the building.

I also then remember going home at night (I live near an airport) and being totally striken by how quiet it was for the next 3 days with no planes going anywhere.

Could it be possible that 8 years later, some people can also find humor in the tragedy? Or is that not allowed?

Holy living fark....

I 've been in classes and away from news sources.

What the hell is going on?!

I was like this guy. I came out of class and it had all happened.

2009-09-11 11:08:11 AM
I was sitting in my 7th grade social studies class when the phone rang, the class clown chirped "I didnt do it!" and got some laughs. The teachers face didn't show anything except he turned the TV on to CNN and we could see the first tower burning. I figured some pilot got lost and crashed.

Went to next class and in the halls I heard someone yell "Another plane just flew into the other one!" and that is when people got scared. We spent the rest of the day just watching the news in all our classes.

I was in the hall again when my friend told me the first tower collapsed and I coudln't believe it The damage didn't look that bad from the footage they showed and I figured that the fires would be put out within a few hours.

I was 13 at the time but I can still remember it all.

On the board I was administrating the thread's headline was simply, "Why?." It got about 4,000 posts. I am no longer affiliated with that site. I will direct you to my current site: http://www.notthatstupid.com . Not a real URL because I may be a stupid girl, but I do know the Fark rules.

I was in the middle of an ugly divorce and moving when this happened. I hooked up the television and turned it on to a local station since the cable dude hadnt arrived yet and that was just before the second plane hit. I remember thinking "Oh shiat, whoever did this just brought the wrath of the whole US government and the rest of the world down on them" and Worrying about a few friends who are in the military or who have kids either in or thinking about joining. I was sure we would utterly destroy those responsible.

Glad that worked out so well, but this isnt the time or place to debate that

We're a nice counterbalance to the self-entitled potheads who foggily remember watching it on television.
