Australia would be the perfect place for those huge mirrors that focus solar energy on a boiler to produce steam energy.

Not quite...we may have the sunlight, we may have the space...we just don't have any friggin' water!

They actually use liquid sodium, because it will hold the thermal energy far better than water, thus ensuring energy when the sun isn't shining. Like those 6 months of winter you Aussies have. Or whatever.

/There's a joke in there about a gigantic spider hiding behind a clock, but I can't find it.

Australia is about 95% desert. A really really hot desert. That's why.

Lots of cooling costs.

Why the hell aren't developed countries using nuclear power?

Because a vocal group of know-nothing, bedwetting handwringers are more afraid of the n-word than they are of wearing socks.

No one likes handwringers!

BMFPitt: In the Southern Hemisphere, CO2 causes global cooling though, right?

Yeah, but like subtard sez, the Aussies are busy using it all up.

But seriously, we believe the carbon numbers coming from China because Communist dictatorships are known for their honesty and freedom of the press, right? I mean, that's a believeable number of course. Good job China! I hope we can be a green country like them sometime.

More power to the Austrians/Australians/whatever. As far as I am concerned they can double their per capita C02 output. The whole global warming / C02 thing is a steaming pile of crap. Just another fear tactic to control the masses. In 10 years when everybody gets tired of hearing about it and it no longer strikes fear the powers that be will dream up some new coming calamity. The whole thing reminds me of the huge ozone hole scare back in the 80s. Where is that concern now? Nowhere. Just like global warming it wss junk science. That of course didnt stop the chicken littles from running around screaming about how the skay was falling.

Australia uses more energy to heat houses than Canada but the only house I've seen in Australia with double glazed windows is in the one I'm in. The thinks cut my winter heating bill by half and that was when the back of the house closed off by plastic.

Heating isn't really the problem in most parts, unless you live in Geelong or Tasmania.

Here in Queensland summer will increase electricity usage, and I am wondering if double-glazed windows would help all that much?

I've always thought that population density (among equivalently developed countries) was one of the most significant factors in CO2 emission, especially once you exceed a certain size threshold. People in the U.S. are spread out so far on average compared to most of Europe that their emissions tend to be higher. The U.S., Canada, and Australia are all large countries with a relatively low population density. Long distance transmission and higher vehicle miles must contribute significantly.

Of course, it doesn't help when we refuse to look past the next Presidential election...

It's like the old joke: Americans think 100 years is a long time; Europeans think 100 miles is a long trip.

Slartibartfaster: There is that water thing too

The water may not be a problem in Victoria soon. Last year there wasn't enough to put out fires approaching Melbourne but the wind changed at the last second and the small fires in Fern Tree Gully were contained. That is an outer leafy suburb but the trees were very dry. This year there is less water and the fire season is just starting and its only September. The local lakes could be completely dry by the end of 2010 if the worst water trends of the last decade are repeated.

global wombats: Here in Queensland summer will increase electricity usage, and I am wondering if double-glazed windows would help all that much

They can
if you have appropriate flooring and some basic mechanisms for shifting heat.
Double glazing stops transfer, it works quite well if you give the heat somewhere else to go.

I saw some great old roman style houses south of Sydney recently (and one hotel on Stradbroke Island), underfloor ducted bricks, properly placed for sun, and one had auto louvres, timed for release in the afternoon, and capturing in the morning... cool design.
