The U.S. fell to second at 19.78 tons per inhabitant a year while Canada was third at 19.81 tons.

Am I reading that right? That's got to be a typo.

I more meant Canada with more emissions/person/year and being ranked lower.

This is because Carbon Dioxide is heavier than air, and thus sinks to the bottom of the earth, which is where Australia is located. They also have lots of American marbles down there, which rolled down after so many Americans lost theirs in the '60s.

If the England Cricket team is lucky, the CO2 will kill off the Aussie Cricket team before England has to play them again.

But Australia doesn't have the Ashes, so clearly they have reduced their carbon emissions.

Pfft, I hardly use any CO2 at all. In fact, I regularly pour a bunch of it into the atmosphere, I have so little use for it.

What do ya'll use your CO2 for?

The average Chinese person emits 4.5 tons of greenhouse gases a year

That stinks! ;)

I found http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/09/australia-largest-carbon-emitter.php, which uses swapped numbers (US 19.81, Canada 19.78).

Double standard as usual?

You think it is easy running a first-world economy the size of the continental US or Western Europe with only 20 million people?

Of-course we need to burn the oil and coal, if only just to produce enough vegemite for everyone.

Let alone the beer.

Why won't people think of the beer?

But only 2/10th of the Aussie population is obese compared to America's 3/10ths.

And Austria is less then 1/10th! [Covering all bases here.]

Who gives a shiat about CO2? CO2 hasn't got a damn thing to do with global warming.

2009-09-09 09:15:25 PM
Most likely due to the fact we run mostly off coal or hydro. There's no nuclear, most of the country is on coal, and it's pretty dirty emission-wise.

That and the farking summers down here make aircon a necessity.

Why we don't just stuff a shiatload of solar panels in central australia is beyond me. There's fark-all there but camels and dingo shiat.

/Or we can turn NT into a giant solar farm
//No one will miss it.

Not sure that yeast use counts.

Someone needs to come up with a really great sexual fetish that involves canned CO2. We could solve this so-called global warming with a win-win.

/wish I were smart enough to figure it out
//and market it

The issue is the degradation of power over distance. Unless you are using sensitive and expensive super-cooled superconductors you lose power as it travels through the lines.

Australia would be the perfect place for those huge mirrors that focus solar energy on a boiler to produce steam energy. I'm pretty sure you have some test facilities down there, just as we do in the desert southwest in the US. I think it's a lot cheaper than solar cells but I'm not sure about that.
