Wait, Ok. Starting........ now !

Well, it seems we'll keep going younger and younger on this round-the-world solo sail until some kid driven by a self-indulged parent ends up in Davy Jones' Locker.

Jessica Watson left Mooloolaba on Queensland's Sunshine Coast on Tuesday on a 10-day preliminary solo journey to Sydney in her 10.4-metre sloop Ella's Pink Lady

This sounds vaguely obscene.

2009-09-09 12:19:14 AM
FTFA: "Ms Watson hopes to become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world."

So, since she had her boat inspected and needed to put in for repairs, she's starting over, right?

2009-09-09 01:01:33 AM
She should change her course and set sail for Darwin. Who is grinning.

2009-09-09 01:25:01 AM
Well, who didn't see that coming? Besides the girl, of course.

2009-09-09 01:36:31 AM
In her defense, cargo ships are notoriously small and elusive vessels, known to sneak up on unsuspecting sailors.

She's cute.

2009-09-09 02:44:17 AM
This isn't her solo around the world attempt, this is just a 10 day trip. Usually a good idea to test out a boat a bit before heading off around the world in it.

DO OVER!

She set sail during a Mercury retrograde. What does she expect?
It's most likely going to get worse.

my girlfriend is rather competitive and sick of the recent 'ooh-wooh i've been around the world on my yacht and haven't can't even buy a beer' types and wants to do something about it.

so, she suggest we kick out an embryo with innate sea-skills, set it adrift in the tradewinds on a saltine.

difficulty:
-she has no womb.
-we have no idea what to do if the tides are against us.
-we haven't thought it out beyond the above.

other than that, i figure we could get enough sponsors to buy ourselves a banner and a six-pack.

To be fair the seas around Australia can be very unsafe.
Sometimes the front falls off.

"The good news is that we know the tracking systems and communication system on her boat are second to none," he said.

The collision-avoidance radar, on the other hand, is a massive piece of crap

10:1 she was texting when when she hit the cargo ship.

"The good news is that we know the tracking systems and communication system on her boat are second to none," he said.

That's good. When she runs into trouble they'll be able to find and help her. know where to not be able to find her body.

Seriously though, isn't something like this a huge indicator that maybe she isn't qualified for a trip like this? Shouldn't there be alarm bells going off in her parents heads?

That pic gave me a flashback to that Paula Abdul video where they tried to make her look skinny by stretching her out like that.

She probably crashed because she was alone long enough without a parent to find her little man in the canoe.

I really don't know how any collision with a ship like that could be trivial. I'd code brown if I even felt the bow wake in my 25 footer.

The Earth is covered by over 140 million square miles of water she can navigate...

... and she hits a 5 story tall 100x20 yard ship.

They are Australian satirists John Clarke and Bryan Dawe who mock the issues of the week on Australian TV. One is always the "Government Minister" concerned answering questions from the other.

There's a few other clips on YT from them.

Sorta like this 7 year old (new window) whose parents thought it'd be a good idea for her to become the world's youngest pilot. 7 years old.
