Okay, i get that people like to keep stuff, i'm a bit of a pack rat myself. But I keep it to where it only clutters corners and isn't composed of foods or other spoilable items that can mold and rot.

Dunno, but there was a TFD thread about it earlier. Someone got invited to that show called Hoarders. They never outed themselves or provided DIT/pics so we may never know.

Hoarders is such a fascinating and yet gross show. There was a woman who was a food hoarder...her house was similar. Rotting food EVERYWHERE. Gross, black squishy pumpkins on the floor of her kitchen, flies all over the place. Her freezer door was duct-taped shut (ish) and there were nasty puddles of rotten, soupy liquid all over everything in both the fridge and the freezer. Her rule was that it wasn't bad if it hadn't puffed up yet. She had food years out of date that they had to fight her to throw away...stuff like yogurt. Ugh.

Yeah, we farked up by busting into your apartment without permission or a warrant, so we're going to send YOU for a psychiatric evaluation against your will.

Double plus good.

Brown Sauce's picture is disturbing in so many ways. Mosty because the guy looks like my mentally-ill neighbor from up the street. KURT, PUT SOME PANTS ON!

2009-09-08 07:24:24 PM
Wow. How the hell do people get away with that kind of thing? I've lived in some pretty skeezy places, and you'd get curbed for that kind of thing.

Why does that dude in Brown Sauce's pic have a camel toe going?

2009-09-08 07:26:23 PM
Once the roaches start infesting the apartment I'm gone. I haven't seen a palmetto but yet, but I've seen roaches big enough to spot moving in a dimly lit room. Allston, MA cockroaches freak me out. At least the German cockroaches are small and not intimidating.

My late mother in-law was a hoarder. That battleaxe had narrow aisles to move through her house, a full attic and a full basement. It took us weeks to clean out her house after she went to the rest home because inserted randomly in each pile of trash was cash, or jewels, family heirlooms and other valuables. It was like the Collyer brothers in miniature.

I believe the worst form of hoarding would have to be those individuals that hoard cats. I have a cat (possibly the reason I can't get a girlfriend) and the smell that comes out of her litter box is disgusting. Now times that smell by thirty and I don't know how you could even breath, especially since our sense of smell is so closely tied to our sense of taste. It is almost as if you are eating cat crap every time you breath.

Man, now there's nowhere to eat in Bithlo on my way to the beach except for McDs and stuff.

Of course I do see great things there like 3 kids on two ATVs, one of which was broken and being towed behind the other with a rope.

Try using wood chips (basically horse bedding) instead of clumping cat litter. Seems to soak up odour better - just scoop the crap out daily and change it once a week (or so). They sell it at most pet supply stores in my area.

WhatABurger is the best, I'm originally from Miami they didn't have any down there, since I've moved to San Antonio they are at every corner..

The dude's 69 years old. I wonder if he's an immigrant who lived through Mao's various reforms and the awful famines that resulted; that might explain some of the hoarding. Or he could just be crazy.

simpsonfan: The officials are useless in a case like that. If his stench makes your apartment unbearable, kick the door down, beat the crap out of him if he resists getting rid of the mess.

My sister (a former home health scheduler) said that when the cops or social services can't create action, the landlord will. He will be outta there because the landlord will kick his ass out, or lose tennants.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have been using Freshstep and cleaning it every other day. She just has gotten into this habit of not covering it anymore. My ex recently moved out and took our dog with her so perhaps her behavior is reflecting this. Cats are strange creatures

I never thought about it before, but I worked with a guy who had a cat, and his apartment always smelled like cat pee. I don't recall ever being particularly interested in him, but if I had ever entertained the notion, the fact that his apartment equalled "cat pee" in my mind would have immediately put a stop to that. You might want to look into that problem.

Didn' read suggestions, but I:
1) wash out all litter boxes once a week
2) have 1 more box than # of cats
3) Put 1 lb. of baking soda on the bottom of each box before putting in litter.
4) Scoop daily

Really? DOA? I think it would have been quicker and actually less retarded-sounding to just say 'dead'.

I don't blame you. Using an overused meme will get your stuff greenlighted when there is nearly no reason to otherwise. I know my last greenlight was, I thought, a comparatively lame headline, but it did use a fark cliche, and it apparently improved the odds.

The other interesting part of this article was about the people who lived in the same building, saying they couldn't leave, they were trapped. It's all about New York rent control buildings, and how it creates a social-support situation that forces people to live where they can afford to.

NYC is not the place to live unless you make a lot of money.

I use the much cheaper regular clay litter ($3 for a 20 pound bag), instead of the $6 to $8 for 14 pounds of the scoopable stuff. The trick is to only use about an inch or two of litter and completely COMPLETELY dump it out and rinse out the box every. single. day.

It's a daily chore, but it will eliminate the stank. And I have 3 cats, one who is a male who never covers his turds.

Good luck!
