Factors to consider:

1. Stopped the Holocaust. Yes, worth it.

2. Everyone who fought against Hitler adopted all of his ideas *aside* from turning Jews into household knicknacks. No. Might as well have stayed home.

Are you farking serious? I'm seriously surprised these guys haven't gone apeshiat over the fact that liberal and innovative thinking led to the US being separated from another country.

NRO: Was the Revolutionary War worth it? Inside, information on how our lives would be better if we still served the Queen.

Was the fall of Rome worth it? In retrospect, non italo-centric peoples gained greater representation in their political determination. I would submit that there would not have been the reordering of Europe which ultimately gave rise to the movement that allowed for the creation of God's greatest blessing upon humanity; the United States of America. This is the same USA, I might add, that would ultimately bring its forces to bear upon a beleaguered Europe under the yoke of a neo-Roman regime determined to exterminate God's chosen people.

History is clear on this. We are all better off for it.

TFA isn't really as bad as the headline makes it seem. It asks a rhetorical question "Was all this bloodletting really worth it?" which only makes sense if viewed from the German/Japanese point of view. The Americans/British didn't do the bloodletting.

The Soviets got screwed. 25 million dead. Can you imagine a Vietnam War Memorial wall for 25 million KIAs? It would be a mile long.

When the answer to the 'rhetorical' question is: "Perhaps," I think it pretty much kills any goodwill the writer may have banked in earlier paragraphs.

Good point. We were the only kids on the block to, really, get a chance to try out the new toy. No wonder we have such a hard time coming down on cops who unnecessarily get their gun off...

It also guarantees that the next real honest-to-goodness dust-up between power players will most likely result in near-sterilization of this godforsaken rock. So there's that.

Obama is quickly turning this country into a spitting image of Nazi Germany without the armed forces buildup, no, wasn't really worth it. Only time until Obama and company start firing up the ovens.

I read earlier this week or maybe last week that the USA had not much to do with the outcome of the war, so I guess it was a waste to have so many of our people killed. God Save the Queen, and lose our number next time.

Any war should be examined, evaluated, and questioned. It's not that I am a pacifist or a tinfoil hat guy, but World War II is remedially explained as "The Good War". It was much, much, much more complex than that. Obviously, putting an end to the final solution was inherently good. However, the world still let approximately 11 million people die. There were a lot of things the U.S. did that should have been prosecuted (and might have if the U.S. had surrendered), a brief lesson that the "good guys" always win. At least that's what the history books tell us as they gloss over many other important facts.

Meh, the right's been on a giant anti-FDR kick since it became clear that people were getting pissed about the circumstances leading to the recession.

This is just an (un)natural progression of that particular propaganda campaign: anything FDR touched HAD to be bad.

The actual question from TFA was, "Did any good come from such a monstrous bloodletting?" It's a rhetorical device used by the author so that he can relate some of the justifications for the conflict, not an implicit criticism or obtuseness. Some submitters and commenters need to get some training in reading comprehension. Or maybe actually read TFA in some of your cases.

In the article, the author is making a not-so-subtle metaphor to the war in Afghanistan. Am I the only one getting that from actually reading the article, as opposed to just the headline?

Sure, if you were a St. Louis Browns fan.

2009-09-04 07:35:53 AM
"Was World War II worth it?" and "Did any good come from such a monstrous bloodletting?" are not, by any rational stretch, the same thing. This is a fairly solid "World War II sucked, but there were reasons we fought it" sort of article.

And those of you who took subby's word for it and went on ahead to your standard "NRO is teh stoopid!" are, well, idiots.

2009-09-04 07:36:28 AM
Wow, Subby... That is some world-class douchebaggery...

FTA: The Holocaust was finally stopped before every Jew in Europe was killed as Hitler had planned. Germany, Italy, and Japan were transformed from monstrous regimes into liberal states whose democracies have done much for humanity in the ensuing years. And Western civilization survived its own heretical cannibals - to foster in the ensuing decades the greatest growth in freedom and prosperity in the history of the planet.

Yes, NRO asked the question... but they also answered it. Better question though is, who greenlit this WHARRGARBL headline?

FTFA:

"Lately, the role of the United States in World War II has been downplayed, since we came late to it, and suffered the fewest military and civilian casualties of the major Allies. But no other power fought on so many fronts in so many crucial ways: strategic air campaigns against Germany and Japan; invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Western Europe, and the Pacific islands; submarine and surface fleet operations against Germany and Japan; and massive convoys and supplies to Britain, China, and the Soviet Union."

The butthurt is strong in this one. The author of TFTA should read this:

The role the Soviet Army played in liberating Europe from the Nazis was deliberately played down in the postwar years as well as during WWII. This could be seen in the delayed opening of the second front, in inconsistent and often superficial coverage of the events on the Eastern, or Soviet front. Our allies, particularly, Great Britain and Churchill personally, sought to show that the main role in the victory belonged to them alone, and Britain in particular. (new window)

Also FTFA:

"Likewise, it has become fashionable to diminish the British role, given that by 1943 its manpower reserves were exhausted and the bulk of the later fighting against the Axis was conducted by Russian and American troops."

It has? When? AFAIK the UK single-handedly defeated the Luftwaffe. If it hadn't been the the UK, the US wouldn't even have been able to enter the european theatre.

2009-09-04 07:37:11 AM
even if we discard the political considerations of destroying the axis member country's imperialistic expansion plans and the brutal nature of their regimes, there is one undeniable benefit received from it's participation in the WWII conflict, that of economics. WWII singlehandedly pulled the U.S. out of the great depression and gave us nearly 50 years of world economic dominance.

2009-09-04 07:37:38 AM
Any of you pussy liberals going to actually deny Obama appointed a 9/11 truther and a communist as one of his top advisors? I would like to see this. Oh ya, that's right, you are stupid kids and suck Obama's taint all day, he can do no wrong.

Get a job.

2009-09-04 07:37:42 AM
It seems that the author is mostly positive about WWII. He uses phrases like "saving western civilization". His is it worth it phrase is in the context of the massive amount of lives lost in the war. Which is a common theme in the modern day debates about war. Is it worth it to stop "evil" if the cost is going to be "this" high. I think subby needs a class on reading comprehension since this article is obviously not a "WWII=bad idea"

Actually, being familiar with the work of Victor David Hanson (read culture and carnage if you are looking for the most intricate detailing of major west vs "east" millitary conflicts of history) I wouldn't be surprised if this was an article designed to justify modern wars, such as Iraq and Afghanistan. By pointing out that we were willing to lost MILLIONS of lives to beat back tyrants, shouldn't we be willing to lose THOUSANDS today to do the same. That would fit with VDH's mo. So when you get all mad about his "perhaps" statement he can then turn around and say "if you are so mad about that statement, why can't you get behind our middle eastern millitary plans today?"

Marginally less retarded than the headline makes it out to be (barely), but we're missing the real issue: Victor Davis Hanson is a bootlicking, chickenhawk farktard. The dude hates Mexican immigrants so much, he claimed he'd rather live in Iraq than Southern California. Seriously.

Ramming bills against wishes. Does the Patriot Act count? Appointing communists. Hey if a "communist" can get the job done, whatever. Better than appointing unqualified dipshiats to posts in the government like say FEMA. Personal advisors? Cheney and Rumsfeld and some of their peers were some of the biggest twats to ever come out of the Nixon administration. As for liars and criminals? Are you farking kidding me?
