It's not for the bank - it's for the federal authorities. The bank doesn't actually use the fingerprint at all. In case the check is fraudulent, the bank dutifully sends the fingerprint to whatever law enforcement agency requests it, ostensibly as part of investigating the fraud.

The more to the story: "Steve Valdez says he was shocked when he was told he had to put his thumbprint on a check written on his wife's Bank of America check. Valdez says the check was written to him with the same address he has on his driver's license. Although he had two forms of identification both with pictures, the bank still required Valdez to give a thumbprint before it would cash the check.

When Valdez told the manager giving a thumbprint would be impossible, she suggested he either bring in his wife or open an account. Valdez says that's not the way the bank would treat someone without prosthetic arms, and he refused."

Dude is wrong. Bank of America is one of the banks which make it difficult to cash checks drawn on themselves. Which is only funny because they're also one of the banks which have been most illegal alien friendly. But Bank of America does indeed do that to everyone...... if you don't have an account.

He should have just taken the check to his own bank. Or had a joint account with his wife from the get go, though I understand why couples dont.

He's banked with Bank of America forever, I assume, since it's his wife's account (and I won't go into the wtfs of that). I wonder what's happened all the other times he's tried to cash a check on his wife's sole account?

When I worked retail there'd be a couple folk who insisted on NOT providing driver's licenses when paying with a check. What do you do then? our manager overrode the license requirement in that case and we had to put '9s' in for what the driver's license number was .. but I was like, why are we requiring this of anybody if just saying 'no' will allow someone not to do it? I don't know much about that kind of stuff. Anybody who was ever a manager or a banker know why?

If I was the bank manager, I would've found the guy's predicament terribly disarming.
