They allowed her to control the boat using a "sip-and-puff" system. Mrs Lister said she was "hugely proud" of the six strong team who provided back-up throughout her series of 40 day-long sails.

...

The challenge has so far raised £30,000 for Mrs Lister's charity, Hilary's Dream Trust, which exists to provide assistance to disabled and disadvantaged adults who want to sail.

I wonder how much the boat cost to outfit

When did Webster's redefine the word solo? What the fark is wrong with admitting you can't do something due to the lack of physical abilities? If you're a quadriplegic, you can not sail solo. I can't dunk a basketball. If I set up a trampoline, it's not dunking. I can call it dunking all day but it won't make it dunking anymore than saying the moon is made of cheese will make it cheddar.

This effort to raise money for paraplegics to be able to go sailing is inspiring. I'm going to go start a foundation for the nation's first Lou Gehrig's Disease sufferer's polo team.

veale728: I wonder how much the boat cost to outfit

From another article (link (p)):

"The boat itself cost $30,000, with an additional $22,000 for the mechanics." And that isn't even beginning to cover the cost of the crew - paying, feeding, and supplying them on top of all that.

So yeah, lame.

In discussion of the 13-year old European girl who wanted to solo sail, I read a claim that there's always a "support" crew in a second boat, following anyone making one of these "solo" trips.

TFA doesn't indicate what exact role this "support" crew played. Were they on a second boat, ready to provide rescue should ms. Lister capsize, or were they on her boat, feeding and caring for her?

Makes a pretty big difference.

so, not only did the crew have to sail around britain, they had to change her diaper too?

Sailing around the 'whatever' used to be a big accomplishment, but can't they now make a sailboat that can sail around the world by itself.

/hoping to be the first man to sail around the world while never leaving home

@merreborn: most of these "solo sails" are in fact backed up by a support crew that follows in a powerboat in the event that something should go wrong. However, the video in the article showed her support crew actually ON THE SAILBOAT, which would just make them a normal crew.

2009-08-31 08:28:08 PM
If I had access to a boat I could completely control with simply sipping and/or puffing then I'm sure I could sail solo just about anywhere too.

Including into bikini-clad teachers.

Yeah, we're all so thrilled for her. I'm going to hire 20 guys to haul my ass up Everest to raise money for flat feet research. Lets see how much money I can 'raise'.

There's a whole list of folks who performed solo circumnavigation without a "support" crew. I'd check out Minoru Saito for starters.

Well, that's a nice 'accomplishment' but i seems like she probably missed out on the major hardships of a voyage like that, the deprivation and sense of unending solitude that you get from being out on the ocean alone.

This self-indulgent spectacle detracts from those who actually overcome great adversity through perseverance and will. All she did was make herself the centerpiece on a float, pardon the pun.

Hell, by her reasoning, she also drives, flies and walks the dog.

So let me get this straight... there are three 'tubes' that she uses to control the boat by sucking and blowing.

Were these tubes connected to the support crew?

I'm sorry, but when you have to use tens of thousands of pounds worth of technology and manpower and be hospitalized in the middle of your "feat," then you haven't accomplished anything except wasting money and my time.

A six man back up team? C'mon. Anyone could do anything if they had six people whose sole mission in life was to support their efforts following right behind them.

She's a quadriplegic, that sucks. But I don't give her any props for this.

Isn't it about time we had a BBC tag. A crap "feel good" story like this can only be from the BBC. Exhibit B, "Boy gets certificate for riding bus" from a few weeks back.

2009-08-31 09:03:08 PM
Reminds me of the lyrics of a song:

I was lost in trouble and strife, I heard a voice and it changed my life
And now it's a brand new day, and I ain't afraid to say
You're not alone when you're down and out
And I think you know who I'm talking about
When I don't know how I'll get through
I ask myself what would Willie do

What would Willie do, well he'd travel so far with nothing but a song and his old guitar
And a tour bus and some semi-trucks, thirty crew men and a little bit of luck

Well he loves all the people, the ugly and the randy
If you don't believe me take a look at the family
And they'll tell you that it's true
When skies are gray what would Willie do

Well long ago he came unto us, his words were simple but they went right through us
And the whole world sang along, but then they didn't want to hear his songs
He was gone and we thought we'd lost him
But he grew his hair and he moved to Austin
And all of the people smiled, they came to hear him sing from miles
Like a miracle all those rednecks and hippies
From New York City down to Mississippi
Stood together and raised a brew
When it's all gone wrong what would Willie do

You know sometimes I wonder when I ain't gettin' nowhere
What would old Willie do when it all gets too much to bear
And I can see him on his lonely old tour bus
And he's got his problems just like any of us
Well he'd just take a deep breath and then he'd let it all go
And he'd take another deep breath and let it all go
And he'd take another deep breath...and he'd hold it
Ah and I bet he'd feel hungry in a way that seems strange
Yeah hungry for all the things that he just can't change
Like the time he passed out in is own bedroom
And his wife sewed him up in the sheets and beat him with a broom and he forgave her
And you think that's rough, well then the IRS came and they took away all of his stuff
They took his golf course and his recording studio, and he just went out and did another show
So when it's all coming down on you
You better ask yourself what would Willie do

What would Willie do, well he'd take a little time
And talk to old rooser as he'd drive on down the line
And there's millions down that road, and with a word he's gonna lighten their load
He loves all the people no matter their races
Hell he even had a hit country song with Julio Iglesias
And that ain't easy to do, so when it's all too much, what would Willie
When the game gets tough what would Willie
When they call your bluff what would Willie do

Did she, herself, actually claim to sail solo - or was that just a prop the writer gave her? It would be far more accurate to claim she was the first quad to captain a ship that sailed that route.

Also, plenty of people spend money on hobbies just for fun, without hoping to raise a dime. She got her dream, and she raised a bit of money on the side. I'm not seeing the prob;em there.

People solo the world without "support crew" all the time. They usually have people back home who they can call for help if something goes terribly wrong, but they're 100% alone when they're at sea.

But yeah, having a six man crew and electric winches does not a solo sail make.

"Her specially-adapted vessel, an Artemis 20 called Me Too, was designed to be operated through three "straws". They allowed her to control the boat using a "sip-and-puff" system."

I think that this is very interesting. It is amazing what human ingenuity is capable of. I wish there was more information about this system, because I'm curious how she controlled the boat, aside from the six-man crew.
