I get this intense feeling of Deja Vu.. haven't we seen this about 40 times by now?

Why is it necessary for the gun to be loaded when instructing on gun safety? So things like this can happen as an example of what NOT to do?

Firearm owners surender....

2003-03-06 11:26:54 AM
So, if he would have been teaching his son how to drive and had a fatal accident then we should ban cars?

2003-03-06 11:31:49 AM
But what an effective lesson! This kid will be able to tell all his friends (and his therapist) that guns really do work.

Darwin strikes again.

The first, absolutely FIRST rule of gun safety; One should NEVER point a gun at anybody that they are unwilling to kill, no matter how unloaded it is.

Unless they are pretty sure, or at least think that the gun is unloaded.

Stupid.

Thanks Yosarian.

I never would have made the connection between guns and cars without your help.

How foolish was I living my life thinking that one is a method of transportation and the other is a tool of destruction.

I compare these stories to the stories about guys loosing limbs to farm equipment; no matter how many times it's happened, it will happen again.

I guess we know where the fark admins stand on this issue.
In any case. It's not a rational response to suggest that we ban guns because accidents happen. of course accidents happen. People die and its tragic. But it's a dangerous world and there are too many ways to die to ban all of them. At no point will we ever be fully safe and we should stop pretending lik this or that action will do so.

Glenlivid - I command you to go read Coleslaw's post in the thread just below this one, about the 500-pound pet bear.

At no point will we ever be fully safe and we should stop pretending lik this or that action will do so.

We would do well to remember during the Never Ending War on Terror.

Yosarian I love that group: Cars & Roses

2003-03-06 02:53:15 PM
What, was he teaching his son how to deal with intruders by pointing the gun at his own head?

"Don't move any closer or the ****** gets it!"

I guess we know where the fark admins stand on this issue.

No we don't. How would we?

2003-03-06 02:58:04 PM
Everyone! We are missing the big story here. There has been a correct usage of the Ironic tag! Has no one noticed?

2003-03-06 03:11:56 PM
holy crap I totally missed that Impaler.
never mind clearly nothing matters for the world is ending tommorow.

Weaps

If I understand the story correctly, the gun was in the kid's hand when it went off, not the dad's. (Police are still considering charges, and ya gotta think they aren't planning to charge the dead guy for shooting himself.)

Hey man, nice shot.

Doesn't sound like he was teaching gun safety.. sounds like he was teaching how to blow away intruders..

should have started with the gun safety..

sad tho.

2003-03-06 03:45:52 PM
this must be the fifth time ive seen a story like this on fark, im in the matrix

2003-03-06 03:46:54 PM
At this time, police have not decided if they will file charges against him.

Hey, man: do the crime, do the time.

Can I help you?

"(Police are still considering charges, and ya gotta think they aren't planning to charge the dead guy for shooting himself.)"

They're considerng charging the kid?! For what, for having in idiot for a father? That's illegal?

2003-03-06 03:47:25 PM
Guns are more dangerous than cars. Remember that article about the guy who shot the rapist who tried to run him down?

I wonder what this lecture actually included, hmm, at least how to pull the trigger I guess...

2003-03-06 03:48:22 PM
Ha ha.

Have gun will die.

2003-03-06 03:48:44 PM
Oh, didn't catch that. My bad. Oh well, guess shouldn't have loaded the gun before teaching the "But don't shoot your father" phase of the kid's training.

2003-03-06 03:48:47 PM
Damn, I meant Filter.
Mods, please filter my last comment.

Hey man, nice shot.

Investigators say the man was trying to show his son how to deal with intruders when the gun went off at their home in the 100 block of South Kendall Street around 3:45 p.m.

A bullet struck the man in his head.

Have the police discovered if the bullet that entered this man's head was indeed the same one that had been discharged from the gun he was showing to his son?

Hopefully TSG has a follow-up with the results of this investigation.

Ahh a pointless gun debate, I shall be avoiding this thread after my pointless remark. What idiot shows a 13 yr old how to defend the house with a handgun? OH I KNOW the kind of idiot that buys a gun to defend the house...

OK Knuckleheads, listen up...

You can't get a Darwin Award if you have procreated.

TheGrayCat:

That's what I was saying!! That, and why the hell would they charge the kid?? He just lost his DAD!!! Is that not enough to deal with?

2003-03-06 03:49:58 PM
Gun safety, right.... Kid shoots dad for dad being a tightwad on his allowance. Dad dies. Cops show up. Kid claims was all in the name of gun safety. Cops: ohh ok.

Damn thats the 3rd dad i have shot this year. Better sign up for more safety classes.

2003-03-06 03:49:58 PM
My thought is: Why would they think about pressing charges against the kid? Don't you think that he's going to have to live with the fact that he KILLED HIS FATHER for the rest of his life?

HEELLOOOOO!

2003-03-06 03:50:01 PM
You're all assuming that Darwin Dad was conducting some kind of lesson here.

The story is from an account of the kid who had just shot and killed his father. It might be true. Maybe.

Cars have other uses, Such as a means to GET SOMEWHERE! A get is made to shoot things. Of course to some people that means getting somewhere too.

2003-03-06 03:50:20 PM
"And here is how you stop an intruder, son. You jus...
BANG!

2003-03-06 03:50:24 PM
I agree there's a deeper story here.

"Gun safety" is the kid's excuse. Who's there to disagree?

"F**k you, dad! I'll go out when I want! Clean my room? I'll f***ing clean your room! With a gun!"

Blam!

"uh.. he was teaching me gun safety when it just went off."

(yeah, I've got issues. So what. Saw Natural Born Killers again last night.)

2003-03-06 03:50:32 PM
While the death is tragic, I can't help thinking this guy would have been a great public school teacher.

2003-03-06 03:50:48 PM
that's kinda sad, actually.

I love these forums.

Woah, Sheena, great minds think alike...and 3 seconds apart!

2003-03-06 03:51:38 PM
I learned gun safety from my old man, I have taught my kids. We (all 3 generations) took NRA classes with the BSA. I can tell you this man was not teaching gun safety, this man never learned gun safety. I feel bad for his family and their loss.

If you own a gun (car, axe, pocket knife, pool, ...) learn how to use it safely. This could happen to your loved ones.

/pontification

Sheena was a man..

2003-03-06 03:53:53 PM
C'mon, now, looka at the big picture: I'll bet the kid actually learned something about gun safety here.
