What is the ratio of workers to freeloaders in Switzerland?

Everything is expensive as hell there, but it's a great country. I'd move there if it was ever made to be an easy process.

pretty low, i think. i lived there for a couple of years. it's very, very efficient. actually, it's a true conservative's dream: state's rights (it's a confederation), low taxes, high incomes and the government stays the f*ck out of your private life. in other words, republicans would hate it.

Yes, but DOOP almost destroyed it all.

A friend of mine's son moved there for a job, and one grandchild had been diagnosed with autism here, and one had an unknown seizure problem. They had been to doctor after doctor here. When they got to Switzerland, they set up appointments to get started with specialists to care for their children. The first doctor looked at the supposedly autistic son and said "he's not autistic. . .he needs some different discipline and they need to challenge him in school." He told them a few things to do, and he's been perfectly fine now, and within 3 weeks of being there, they had a diagnosis and treatment for the other son, who is now 3 years old and seizure free. He spent 2 years having seizures here. Anecdotal, yes, but pretty damned impressive.

So if I'm reading this right, you're an advocate for turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?

Of course not. Leave the TV on while hitting your kids to drown out the cries.

Although, adjusted for differences in cost of living, the average Swiss income is apparently only about $2,000 less than the average American income.

I visited Geneva briefly in 2003. It was like a little slice of heaven...

But you know, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

That's because every household has to have a military rifle to protect themselves in case Lichsteinstein gets weird ideas again.

OK then.

But how do they have good doctors? Reading up on their system on Wiki, it appears their system isn't significantly different, I think, from what the original Democratic plan was, and I was told that such a system would drive out all the doctors. How is it possible they found a good doctor in Switzerland? The Republicans couldn't have been wrong.

If you're a landlocked country that maintains a military only for self-defense and peacekeeping, you don't need a navy much less aircraft carriers.

And you know, three dozen F-18s, a few hundred relatively new tanks, a decent number of fancy infantry fighting vehicles... not bad for a country the size of Maryland+Delaware with a population the size of Virginia.

Here are some miscellaneous Right wing speaking points that should help clarify things:

-Americans are fat
-tort reform
-illegal immigrants
-US population is too big (geography is different)

How does this story have any impact on what I advocate for children? I was just sharing the experiences of a friend. I do believe, though, that the only country in Europe in which you can spank your child is Switzerland.

We can't be like Switzerland because we're too muticultural, stupid, fat, and lazy.

Now, let's talk about "American Exceptionalism."

2009-08-28 11:30:39 AM
I spent a couple weeks in Switzerland and came to the layman's conclusion it was the greatest place on earth. Sure, it has its problems, but I got the impression that everyone had just enough sense of fairness, self-worth, and work ethic to keep everything moving in the right direction. The latter is the part where America fails time and time again, despite having one of the best political frameworks in the world. It's our people, not our systems.

I was told when I stepped off the train in Milan, Italy that it was totally acceptable to hit gypsies - even the gypsy kids.

i'm a democrat (well, a moderate one, anyway), and i LOVE the fact that virtually every swiss has a machine gun.

swiss joke: with all those guns, why don't the swiss murder each other? answer: because it's illegal.
