squirrelflavoredyogurt: Why is it that people continually believe that every angst filled teenager is a budding artist filled with the desire to express themselves but lacking the canvas to do so?

Because the art world is all about convincing other people that certain kinds of art is good so they will pay far more money for it than said art is worth. "Good art" and "bad art" are just matters of opinion and propaganda designed to control the cashflow from rich suckers to artists and art galleries. If the art itself doesn't matter, why not get it from punk kids who make it fast, cheap, and controversial?

You know, that look like naked ladies and not melted eggs or bad data flow diagrams?

I can stand in? Did I say that? I meant to say, "I can't stand it." Wow. That's a funny thing I wrote.

wh0mprat: If art were any good, it would sell, right? That's basic capitalism.

Sadly, "good art" in the professional art world, anywhere large amounts of money is exchanged for "art," is what impresses other rich people and art snobs. The very quality of impressiveness of art is defined by art snobs, those who buy and sell expensive art, so the definition of "good art" is also decided by art snobs.

So yes, the "good art" is selling everywhere and breaking sales records, but the pictures still look like something anyone could make.

I'm 35 and I still skate. Care to tell us what "winner" hobbies you have?

FIRST you are inferring that all who skateboard also graffiti. This is most likely not true.

SECOND... regardless of what these kids in question are called, they are still vandals with no consideration for others and no sense of responsibility or morality. They were trusted to decorate an area and turned it into a mockery.

THIRD I do not particularly like "skateboarders". To me, these are kids that roam the city carrying skateboards... occasionally setting them down to roll across an intersection purposely in front of traffic to see if people will stop for them. Then they pick it up and continue walking with it. They have no skateboarding talent, do not use the board for transportation, and usually take joy in flipping off motorists, breaking things, and hanging out on private property not belonging to them. If you are trying to change my mind about skateboarders, then I would suggest that you get some very large buses, come to my city, and scoop up the delinquents (yes, even the ones that have hit 25 - 35 years old and still haven't grown up). Then please replace them with actual athletes that take pride in learning their craft and have respect for others.

FOURTH The only REAL skateboarders I've seen are kids in college towns using their boards to get to class faster because they can't afford cars. These are true skateboarders who don't have to scrape their boards down other people's railings and curbs.... scraping them into ugliness and permanently damaging them. These real skateboarders actually stand on them and travel.

FIFTH My hobbies do not include trespassing, destructive behavior, and antisocial grunts and gestures. Sorry, but I do not have appreciation for your "sport".

The other side of the coin is your basic taggers. They are hoods looking to mark thier territory like dogs pissing on a tree. They should be held responsible.

I was told my a graffiti artist that one should never tag anything other than GOVERNMENT (as in the US Government) property. Never tag the city or the state property...this is what is causing the bad name in graffiti art.

Right... or teach them that pulling shiat like this has consequences.
Contrary to your "fight the man" and "fark da po-lice" feelings, what they did was wrong and expensive. Of course, they should have been supervised, so that was the gov't's farkup, but they still just went and proved they were delinquents, just like everybody thought they were in the first place.

Sounded like a good idea at the time. But seriously you're gonna get what you ask for if there's no supervision. Don't these people have kids?

Here in Tulsa, a lady who owns a liquor store lets the locals spray paint her 2 buildings. And they do. A lot. The look changes every few weeks as new art is sprayed over old.... repeatedly. It's cool to see the building evolving as I drive by a couple times a week. They respect her business and don't tag the front of the building or vandalize anything while they're at it. In doing so, she prolly has the best street cred of any business owner in town.

You have a real stupid and ignorant definition of "real" skateboarding. Skateboarding came about as a result of bored surfers wanting something to "surf" when the waves weren't good... hence the term "sidewalk surfing." It was born from doing tricks, not transportation.

Looking at the artwork, it looks like her building gets painted by those who do actual art, rather than the taggers. Some of the artwork is quite beautiful.

Demolish the park.

Publish a statement that says:

"In response to a clear lack of understanding on the part of local youth as to what a "gift" is, we have opted to take it back. A park will never again be built in this area with public funds. We will be happy to let you apply for permits to build your own park, with your own funding.

Have a nice day."

Art needs room and freedom to blossom. Most of the time you get shiat, but sometimes it turns out alright. You can easily squash talent and creativity with rules and regulations.

Seriously, these are people who talk back, distrust authority, and can't even clean up their damn rooms. If you give them spray paint + a skate park - supervision and expect anything less you lack the mental capacity to correctly do your job.

Ahhhh, I see. So, adults are expected to act childish and petty, and the children are expected to not act their age and experience, but instead be wise beyond their years, and show the adults the way? This isn't some movie. The adults should man up, admit their mistake, let the kids paint the area the way they want, clean up the rest and move on. Instead, they whine about how the snake they were playing with bit them.

I was a skateboarder for many years when I was younger. I used to be pretty good too. I was a bit of a jackass punk but I mostly kept my nose clean and got A's in school. Most of my friends through school were also skaters. Some were merely skater-types. Posers, if you will, and girls who liked to hang around skaters.

Now that we have the wonder of facebook and email, I've been in touch with a bunch of my old friends from those days and have found that they are predominantly successful, well-educated people who all moved away from the shiat-hole county where we all grew up. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. But I'd guess that around 85% of my old skater friends, including myself, made good. One's a film-maker, one's a corporate lawyer, one's a financial analyst, I'm an engineer.

I also find it interesting that most of those folks from back in those days who excelled in more traditional sports have largely ended up right where high school left them.

It is obvious that our experiences differ. My experiences have shown that skaters tend to be more successful, higher educated, and have higher goals and initiative than those who you seem to give a higher estimation.
