Better article with good pictures here:

Secret code etched in Stirling Castle revealed to be oldest written music in Scotand

i.dailymail.co.uk

The picture is almost detailed enough to see what they are talking about. There are three rings of carvings around the figure. I can't see it in the inner ring. Could they be talking about the middle ring?

Let me get this straight. They hire a guy to make a replica of a carving that would have been seen when the nobility of Scotland gathered in that room, and the carving contains some musical notation?

Isn't this just another example of how people are making copies of music from a peer-to-peer network.

Mr Donaldson had identified a sequence which featured the Roman numerals 0, I and II, in what seemed like a binary code.

I actually can't stop laughing at this sentence.

So, when he realized what he'd discovered, did he physically reel? Was his worldview turned on its head? Cause that's how Dan Brown always describes it.

It seems the notation is a guide rather than exact notes. The musician would improvise based on the guide, so there's no telling what the actual music would sound like.

Stuff like that is why major news publications have lost all credibility when reporting anything remotely related to science.

Road to nowhere is a great song, more than two note when you listen to the melody, perhaps you mean chords?

Reading the better article, I think so. The 0/1 notation was apparently common in Wales and is present on the middle ring.

Given the frequency of the IIs in that picture, it appears they function more as a line stop/start.

Yep. The only amusing part of the article. Binary.

Is there even a roman numeral for 0? I'm not smart enough to know that. But I'm smart enough to know what binary is

Yer correct. 0 is an Arabic construct that was ruled "blasphemous" by the Pope since nothing can't exist when God exists.

/you can also thank 0 for Algebra and modern math

I see him fighting an Irishman in a gangster film. Rocky can be the champion for the Italians in Philly who manage to control everything and they quell an Irish uprising, in part, because of Rocky's grit in the ring.

I see this happening in the gritty streets of the 1890's Philly. ANd I see outrageously goofy hats.
