Wow! Do the New Haven police wear SS uniforms?

This is tax enforcement gone overboard. They may collect 98% in taxes due to aggressive efforts, but how much do the contractors make out of all this? They're not doing it just for the fun of it.

This is why I visit places like CT, but I would never want to live there. What a bunch of assholes.

/oops, let it slip that I've visited there before
//forgot to register
///are they going to nail me for that?

My last two visits to Pepe's made me sad... the pizza wasn't that good.

I have problem with the City doing this. You live here, you need to register your car here and pay the property taxes that the rest of us have to pay. If you don't like it, you can move.

Wait, a city trying to collect taxes it is owed? Just plain crazy.

2009-08-26 05:29:46 PM
I guess people who keep their cars garaged at night are exempt from this?

I wonder how many marriages will be officially ended with this when a license plate for the wrong person is found in a driveway?

Does CT have front plates? If not you could just start backing into your driveway as well.

How do they handle apartment complexes? If you aren't registered to vote, don't have a job, and don't have a mortgage (obviously), it's kind of hard to track.

I've never been a fan of municipal and county automobile license taxes just for this reason. Too many people cheat and it skews the system. Set it universally at the state level or don't have one at all.

Furthermore, those taxes are nothing more than a grab at the rich. Something tells me that a 2009 Audi A3 causes less wear and damage to a road than a 1988 Chevy Suburban. Guess who pays more in taxes, though.

IMHO, automobile license taxes should be based on the weight and age of the car. As either goes up, so do the taxes.

As for the city of New Haven, maybe they should get with the program and have property taxes set accordingly so that you don't need a automobile license tax. Or maybe you can try to lure more commercial and light industrial, as they tend to be major contributors to the local tax base. You know, so that way you don't have to be a bunch of royal douchebags spying on your citizens and all.

Just an idea, though.

"If everybody plays by the rules, everybody pays less," Mayor John DeStefano Jr. said Tuesday.

Um, no. Where government and taxes are concerned, nobody ever, EVER pays less for anything. That's a rule that applies only to free market economies.

According to the article the contractor is taking a 30% cut of any collected revenue.

Pay your damn taxes. How dare they try to enforce the law?

2009-08-26 05:47:34 PM
So, I go to school in New Haven, but pay property tax on my car at a family member's house because that's where the car lives for half the year. Since we're all starting back to school next week, that means I'm going to get caught in this. They say that I can challenge it, but, knowing city govt., there's no way that anyone is going to believe me. NH - how about you fix the potholes in the roads from last winter before you spend the money on this?

2009-08-26 05:52:16 PM
My car's fine, but this is just another reason to add to my list of reasons why I don't go to New Haven.

Don't like a tax? Try to get the law changed. Just not paying makes you a shiatty citizen, because it means that you're screwing your fellow citizens who DO obey the law.

*Looks out window* Nope they're still there . . . I've gotta wonder though, all the tech and personnel they are going to use will net . . . how much?

Still, I annoys me no end with the PA & NJ plates on the streets. I mean, I pay, my neighbors pay so why can't they pay?
OTOH, not really in favor of their tactics. Just how will photographing only the illegal plate help discover who the owner is.
Confession- didn't read the whole article. With all the newspapers failing why hasn't the Register? Six year old can point out typo's

So much wrong here, my head hurts.

I don't get the China connection. Having spent considerable time there, and having a wife from China, I can tell you that there isn't even a fraction of the government oversight of daily life that exists here.

2009-08-26 06:10:43 PM
And here I thought there would be a discussion about the so called one child law in China which only applies to the poor people. I have spent the past year teaching English to kids from China who have multiple brothers and sisters.
Sort of love the place I teach at, only one language allowed on campus, English oddly enough.

havaniceday: ooh ooh, how about a system where nobody gets screwed?

That's what we would have, if people would pay their damn taxes. (I'm using "screwed" to mean "being forced to pay a tax that other people are getting away with not paying"). Unfortunately, since lots of people were getting away with it under the lax enforcement, it's reasonable to try to enforce it.
