Happens more often than you'd think. Assuming "almost never" is what you'd think. From EMTingering, I have firsthand knowledge of two nursing home murders.

He only did it because the other guy supported Obama's death-panel ladened Insurance plan

They guy he killed probably had a bed by the window, and would go on and on about the scenery. Jealous, the killer murdered him, only to discover the window was bricked over. Scary stuff.

Since the guy is elderly and likely to die soon, is the Scottish government going to push for his release on humanitarian grounds?

FTA: Fatal beating at Columbia facility is Howard County's first homicide of year

It's almost September and an 87-year old killing a 91 year-old in an assisted living community is the first homicide in the county, this year?

Sounds a lot safer than most places.

From CNN:
-- At about 1:30 a.m., Murray gave Jackson 10 mg of Valium.
-- At about 2 a.m., he injected Jackson with 2 mg of the anti-anxiety drug Ativan.
-- At about 3 a.m., Murray then administered 2 mg of the sedative Versed.
-- At about 5 a.m., he administered another 2 mg of Ativan.
-- At about 7:30 a.m., Murray gave Jackson yet another 2 mg of Versed while monitoring him with a device that measured the oxygen saturation of a his blood.
-- At about 10:40 a.m., "after repeated demands/requests from Jackson," Murray administered 25 mg of propofol, the document said.

I don't know; 10:40a.m. and still hasn't fallen asleep/asking for more drugs?!
Maybe he should of just stayed up until the next night...

There was a Florida (of course) case where 80+ woman shot her cheating 'boyfriend' with an antique pistol.

Her attorney demanded a jury "of her peers" and since 70 is top age limit for jury duty .....

It's a pretty affluent bedroom community mid-way between Baltimore and DC, surrounded by farmland. Probably 65% of the population are civil servants or government contractors. Columbia is the largest planned development in the US, if memory serves. No factories, no slums, no etc. The worst thing they have to worry about is MS-13 members coming up to shop at Target.

Imagine...

The guy was likely dying (if you're 91, in a nursing home, and on hospice, you ain't long for this world), and either had enough money for a nursing home and/or people who cared enough about him to place him there (they aren't cheap; depending on the place, you are looking at anywhere from $2000-12000 per month) - then he's beaten to death.

You probably can't even blame the guy who killed him; they were probably both out of their mind. The one might have thought the other was a German or Japanese soldier and killed him (or any number of other possible "insane" scenarios).

This is what awaits most of us in our final days; no one talks about it because it isn't a pleasant topic. If we are all so lucky, we'll get some care at a loved one's house, and either our final days there or at a fairly nice nursing home (trust me, you don't want to end up in a sub-$2000 per month home - I've seen those, too). Better start saving for your "retirement" now...

Perhaps the victim was trying to steal the assailant's dentures.

I recently had to move my 87 year old grandfather into this facility, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

No... really. I moved him in there back in March after it became apparent that he was no longer able to adequately care for himself. He's at the second highest level of care in the place, which costs around 5k a month. Home care would cost even more. I just hope the medicaid waiver kicks in before the money runs out.

He's already got two. One is still injured from his fall in January, though.
