WTF? They got dust masks?

When I was a kid we got NOTHING! And we had lead paint on the walls and asbestos in the ceiling!

It's either $2 dust mask or 2 dollar dust mask. It ain't both.

$2 dollar doesn't make cents.

I read it as $2 duck masks, so I was very confused.

When you type your PIN number into the ATM machine, it gives you the special $ dollars.

thalassatx: And we had lead paint on the walls and asbestos in the ceiling!

My school had the ceiling tested. Three times.

One place said it was asbestos
One place said it wasn't
One place didn't have a clue what it was.

As an added bonus, this practically guarantees that the kids are safe from SARS, avian flu, and swine flu.

Good thing they weren't handing out condoms.

They took out all of the asbestos in my high school's ceiling while we were in classes every day. They poured hot tar to replace it, which sometimes leaked through and nearly scalded a few kids. The workers had full hazmat suits. We had nothing.

That might explain some things about me.

"I think I shouldn't be in the school because I might get sick," the seven year old said.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by the media adding in the random comments of people who probably don't even understand what's going on?

That's like an earthquake story, where they just HAVE to add in, "A 5-year-old commented saying, 'It was really loud.'" Well gee, I never would have guessed.

EPA stats ^ on toxic air quality at schools throughout the country. I can vouch for the fact that nothing is being done here by any agency to address the problem, though industrial pollutants have been implicated in lowering student I.Q. as well as innumerable other ill effects.

Unsurprisingly, the schools with the worst air quality tend to be the poorest and the ones where parents often don't have the resources to advocate on their kids' behalf.

I wish I had that after a fire in our chemical stores room in high school. It was a few inches from the big bottle of 8 mol HCL. They cleared us to go back in about an hour after the fire (contained by the Biology teacher and a fire extinguisher), even though our lungs and eyes were uncomfortable the rest of the day.

A hot plate plugged into decades old wiring caused the fire. Hurray for budget cuts to building maintenance!

At least you all were told that their might be air pollution, we were told to carry on but stay away from the GYM for unknown reasons.

EPA? OSHA? They sound socialist.

Our college cafeteria developed a leak in the ceiling, so they shut it down and made us go across campus while they repaired it and removed the asbestos. Except they vented all the white dust out of cafeteria and into our open dorm windows. Yay progress.

"Students and parents at John Burroughs Education Campus were greeted at the door by the PTA with face masks and a letter warning parents to keep their kids out of school for 72 hours because of concerns over last minute construction."

Non-issue. Admin personnel had been staffing the building for the past MONTH, the PTA had it's panties in a twist because they weren't coddled with enough pseudo consulting duties regarding the state-funded upgrade.

Because that protects you from the general bad air quality surrounding some of these schools? It's not all from internal sources.

A school in my region is in bad shape as well. The water is contaminated so the little terrors can't drink from the fountains and sinks. The lunch ladies are having to use bottled water to cook. I can see it if there is a mistake:

Today children we will be learning about Montezuma's revenge, the Hersheys, and brow tidal waves. You won't have to worry about blockage.

The school year is like the hockey season. Gets a little longer every year. Soon it will be year round with 2-week break.

Then the teachers union will call a strike....

I can see justifying a 4-6 week break in the summer, with another long break from thanksgiving till just after New Year, with little 3-4 day weekends here and there.

But you are right, the teacher's union won't stand for it...

We just pulled our shirts up over our mouf's in my day, if we were lucky enough to have shirts. We'd smoke asbestos out behind school at recess.

Not to threadjack or anything, but I wonder how many of these folks running to the EPA and OSHA about their snowflakes' exposure to asbestos are the same folks screaming "get the Government out of our lives, the Government can't do anything right!" when it comes to healthcare.....

Judging by the polls, there's bound to be a bunch of 'em.....

i used to pick at the covers they wrapped around the asbestos coated pipes in the back of the band room hoping it would get them in trouble with the inspectors. i also turned my music teacher in for illegally copying sheet music. i had to keep myself entertained somehow in that cesspool.

Wow. The staff have been there for the last MONTH. I think these kids will be just fine.

2009-08-24 09:14:14 PM
When I was in high school, they did some air quality tests at one point because my school had asbestos in it.

The formally announced that the asbestos didn't pose a threat and the air was fine, then promptly sealed off the main office and removed the asbestos from there. (The rest of the school? Nope.)

As for Phifer, he didn't have to step inside the school before making up his mind. Even if everything inside seems okay, he says his daughter is still staying home. "It might seem okay but what you can't see can be harmful. What you can't smell can be harmful," Phifer said.

...this guy is probably on the committee to ban all wi-fi access points and cell phone towers from within 500 yards of school property...

/if I ever have kids they'll be painting the walls, house, fences, etc...
