More unfortunate than sad. Grizzly's are becoming a big problem in Montana and Wyoming. It's getting so bad in areas that this thing is going to start happening more frequently. In some of the heavily populated grizzly areas, the bears have learned to go towards gun shots as they mean a free meal for the bear.

The bear had been dead about a month.

It was a grisly find.

BGates: More unfortunate than sad.

So habitat loss is in no way responsible for this? At this point in history, all problems with animals are humans' fault. We can go to to the farkin moon and find particles so small they have no mass.

We can find a home for a bear. The people who shot it deserve similar treatment.

And then I want them revived, shot again, and lit on fire, preferably using Charmin as a starter.

I'd suggest you visit this part of the world before jumping to conclusions such as you have. Grizzly's are still on the endangered species list, so killing them (even under self defense situations) can carry some very stern penalties. We don't know the situation of this killing. It might have been a hiker acting in self defense.

On more information, it appears the bear committed suicide.
Looks like it was just too much...to bear.

Didn't see the first bear for about a half-hour. Grizzly. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the butt. What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, bears come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the bear come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that bear he go away... But sometimes he wouldn't go away.

Sometimes that bear looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a bear is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those bears come in and... they rip you to pieces.

You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many bears there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist.

At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the bears took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

/Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Some men hunt for sport,
Others hunt for food,
The only thing I'm hunting for,
Is an outfit that looks good...

See my vest, see my vest,
Made from real gorilla chest,
Feel this sweater, there's no better,
Than authentic Irish setter.

See this hat, 'twas my cat,
My evening wear - vampire bat,
These white slippers are albino
African endangered rhino.

Grizzly bear underwear,
Turtles' necks, I've got my share,
Beret of poodle, on my noodle
It shall rest,

Try my red robin suit,
It comes one breast or two,
See my vest, see my vest,
See my vest.

Like my loafers? Former gophers -
It was that or skin my chauffeurs,
But a greyhound fur tuxedo
Would be best,

So let's prepare these dogs....

BGates - Having lived in many places that had a lot of bear, people need to learn to live with them. It's really not all that hard and bear are not such a problem to live with that they require being killed.

Do a GIS "living in bear country" if you need some info to help you become a better human when it comes to dealing/living with bears.

You are correct that the grizzlies are becoming more of a problem in our area. I live in Wyoming also (and went to WSU for graduate studies, go cougs, don't coug it!).

At the same time, we have ranchers that will shoot anything they feel is a threat, whether it is or isn't is irrelevant to some of them. We also have a goodly amount of poaching douchebags in both states, although I doubt this was the case in this article, since the bear was just left. I would like to know what kind of weapon killed the grizzly. I glanced over the article and didn't see any reference to that information.

I do think that a limited grizzly season is due in Wyoming. It should mirror what Florida did for gators (gators reproduce faster than grizzlies though and Florida is still being overrun by gators).

Some folks say there ain't no bears in Arkansas
Some folks never seen a bear at all
Some folks say that bears go around eating babies raw
Some folks got a bear across the hall

Some folks say that bears go around smelling bad
Others say that a bear is honey sweet
Some folks say this bears the best I ever had
Some folks got a bear beneath their feet

Some folks drive the bears out of the wilderness
Some to see a bear would pay a fee
Me I just bear up to bewildered best
And some folks even see the bear in me

So meet a bear and take him out to lunch with you
And even though your friends may stop and stare
Just remember that's a bear there in the bunch with you
And they just don't come no better than a bear

This is a good point, but it is true that the grizzly in Wyoming have learned to have no fear of humans or gunshots. I used to live in Cody, WY and up at Pahaska Tepee, it was a well known problem. Grizzlies will come to the sound of gunshots in that region. You really can't compare it to Alaska or Canada in that respect.

I have the same feeling.

If it was poaching, then they should get caught and penalized. But since they didn't take the animal, I have a feeling it wasn't that case.

I just got back from Virginia. We were in Shenandoah. We were lucky to have seen several deer and two black bears. I can't see why anyone could bring themselves to shoot a beautiful animal. They should be put in a cage with a bear and given a pocket knife.

Yeah, and I'm sure the defense was "he's coming right for me!". People are idiots where bears are concerned. Forgive some of us who actually live in bear country for automatically blaming the poor besieged hiker because there are so few ways of actually avoiding bear contact.

I have no problem living with bears. But a person has to be proactive when doing so. Remember, that not all bears act the same, the older a bear gets the more willing it is to go after, easier prey, such as cattle, people, pets, etc...

I'd say something about restricting gun carrying in protected areas but "from my cold dead hands".

I bet the guy shot it from a couple thousand yards and let it crawl off and die. Big swinging dick. Such a man.

This is pretty much how all 'sport hunters' behave if they think they can get away with it.

If they don't respect nature enough to go and kill things for fun, it pretty much casts a heavy farkin shadow over any protestation that "they would never do that".

I took this picture of a grizzly a few days ago, from less than 10 yards away. It approached me, walking down the stream catching fish. I took a couple of pix and then backed away, pepper spray in hand.

I live on Kodiak Island and see bears all the time. They're pretty safe to be around, except in the early spring and late fall when they're hungry. Anybody who thinks they need to shoot a bear just because it approaches, is an idiot or a wannabe cowboy.">">i896.photobucket.com

A hiker who just happens to carry around a rifle with enough stopping power to drop a grizzly? What, your "strength training" requires you to carry around a linear weight like that?

Bzzt. False, but a good troll. Sports hunters pay for the vast majority all of the programs that go toward wildlife conservation. The vast majority of them also follow the rules. The correct term for those that shoot things illegally is 'poacher'.
