I LOL'd at the toe one too... I think one of the main differences is that turtles have finny feet for swimming and tortoises have desert-walkin feet. I'm sure someone is an expert and will give you a real explanation, but that's all I got.

/never had a tortoise
//used to keep a wading pool with a turtle in it in my back yard
///mom said "put it back in the lake where you found it, you'll catch salmonella!"

belhade: What's the difference between a turtle and a tortoise, anyways?

Turtles have flippers. Also, since they live in the water, they often have flatter more hydrodynamic shells.

Tortoises have feet and usually have taller, more domed shells.

Terrapins have webbed feet, usually with long claws, and shells more like turtles. They are suited to both swimming and walking, and often live in swampy, marshy areas.

I've long thought that that site has the cutest damn pictures but I avoided it because the commentary of the blogger was just unbearably cutesy-cutesy. Looks like he's improved somewhat or has someone else do the writing. I may have to re-bookmark.

Those were cute! WTF is anyone doing feeding a tortoise mashed potatoes, though?

I don't have pics of him eating, but here is The Patched Guy, a long-term rehab case of mine. I've posted the second pic before. The first one shows him when he managed to get himself stuck on the frame of one of the snake cages. It's tough to see in the picture, but none of his feet are touching the ground.

What happened to TPG to cause holes in both sides of his shell like that? Poor boo. You could have at least pimped him out a little bit... "Yo dawg I herd u like strawberries so I glued some fiberglass strawberries to yo' shell and sprayed strawberry smell on 'em!"

ninjakirby and Llois: (If you're still hanging around) The big guy was run clean over by a car or truck and had major fractures on both sides of his shell with lungs, intestines, etc. caught in the fractures. Surgery and shell repairilarity ensued.

Those are (unfortunately non-pimped) acrylic patches on his shell. They'll hold him together until he heals.

I didn't realize that the farkers will probably try and eat just about anything.

Good on you for helping the li'l guy out tho! (Seriously... call Xhibit... yo dawg he can totally glue some crap on that shell!!)

Dayum that's one tough tortoise.

It's funny when you come home after a long day and find them stuck in funny places. I routinely would find my female upside down near knocked over stuff she tried to climb. She's climbed up tree stumps in my backyard. I've found her asleep upside down because she fell over when I left the house and just laid there all day.

I had a friend who had a tortoise with a (she says) healed bullet hole in its shell. Who would shoot a freakin' tortoise?? The most unobtrusive pet EVER?

(Caveat: this friend also told me she had a collapsed lung but was released from the hospital the same day, and that she had contracted the first case of measles in this state since the 1970s but she cried her way out of quarantine because she had no one to care for her dogs. Yeah, she's a little bit nutty.)

Also... I held the tortoise for a Christmas portrait this nutty lady wanted to do for all her friends... the bastard thing peed on me.

yay turtles!
I saved one once when it was trying to cross a busy street. I just knew someone was going to smash it so I jumped out of the car, grabbed the bugger and safely deposited him on the other side of the street (where he was headed).

Very cute. I was relived to see these guys and not, say, human babies with spaghetti sauce smeared all over their faces. (But I forget, this is Fark, and I'm safe from that crap here.)

The comments with the turtle pics are hilarious. Turtles have a mouth that is shaped like a smile- therefore all these idiots think the turtles in the photo must be SO happy.

Just like when my dogs pant and people say they're 'grinning'. Yeah, if they're on a walk or lying in the sun they're probably happy, but it's the tail, not the mouth, that tells you so.

Sorry for the threadjack... Yeah I think that's it, there was a guy named Never. My brothers caught some turtles and named one of them Never. I don't remember very much of the movie, because I was really young at the time.

She sounds...female

/troll done, sorry

I've been sort of wanting a pet, but my random schedule (I may work 8 hours, or I may work 20 hours) has prevented me from getting one.

Would a tourtise be able to accept my odd hours? And are they actuall pets rather than 'an animal I keep and feed'? Cats and dogs require affection, and return it; I find it hard to believe a turtle would any more than a fish.
