A drug dealer lived to be an old man.

Hooray, what a hero, he didn't die!

Incredible story. He's been dishing out the booze longer than most people live.

That tag is well-deserved. Hats off to you, sir.

As a former bartender I salute him. Putting up with drunks for that long is indeed heroic.

Anyone that found a career they love and did it for that long is damned lucky.

It's better to fail at what you love doing than to succeed at what you hate doing.

Cheers.

Some bitter "legalize it" guy needs to smoke a joint and chill out.

I'd also point out to folks like Rib that unlike most of us, he will deserve his social security checks. He stayed off the public assistance teat for 77 years. And yeah, I'll drink to that.

A common man that does a job that he enjoys is far more heroic than an well paid miserable man that does a job that he hates.

Trust me, I HATE wall street fatcats and CEO's that think they deserve 25 times what their workers make. I respect the man that works hard and enjoys it.

That's why I see him heroic.

Nogale: I bet he has some good stories.

We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn't get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

2009-08-20 01:25:23 PM
Yeah, I was a bartender for way too long... Though I still would not mess with him even if he got my order wrong -- experience is golden.

I'm impressed that at his age he still has the wits and body to show up to work, even if for half-days.

Sounds like he had a decent career in a place he loved. Luckier than a lot of people.

As someone who was a bartender for 15 years, 10 of them behind my own bar, I commend this guy. The job is alot more difficult than most think. I hope this guy gets at least a few years of work free enjoyment!

Nick's Place looked way cooler than Martini's. Although the music--sounded like some epileptic spazzing out at a piano.

The last paragraph made me smile:

"It was a pleasure" -- he stretches the word -- because I met so many wonderful people."

This tells me that this "drug-peddling" "low-education" man who "contributed only alcohol to society" lived a far richer life than the judgmental pricks trolling this thread ever will.

Doesn't make him a hero, I don't see him risking his life to save someone else. Calling him a hero demeans real heroes.

CrispFlows: I respect the man that works hard and enjoys it.

I agree with that statement, but I think you underestimate the hours some of those "fatcat" CEOs and the like put in. Oh I agree that a shiatton of CEO's are overpaid, but I don't necessarily agree that my mechanic, or even myself, deserve to earn as much. Entitlement thinking like that is equally as dangerous as the rich saying "let them eat cake".
