it's important to teach the children ALL the skills they need later in life.
Teaching driving without teaching how to properly drive while intoxicated is like abstinence only education... FAIL

They could, but the editor probably would have corrected it to 'reeked'.

he couldn't walk in a straight line or recite the alphabet.

Who can't recite the alphabet, even in the throes of a wild bender?

/At least he wasn't an English teacher.

The one at my high school had racked up several over the years.

It never made news. I have seen him at the bars. I think he lives there.

That wouldn't have been a correction if they were transcribing a verbal quote. They would have transcribed it as "reeked" so there would be nothing to correct. And they wouldn't have corrected a written report. They would have typed "wreaked[sic] of liquor" to indicate that they did not make an error but are accurately reproducing what was in the report.

I never knew any habitual drunk drivers until I moved to New Mexico. Then all of a sudden, it was like everybody was doing it. Within a couple months of moving there, I got in a minor wreck while riding with a driver who (unbeknownst to me but knownst to him) had been drinking. Drunk driving is a serious problem down there, in part because I think it's far more socially acceptable in NM than anywhere else I've been.

Two breath analysis tests also showed that his blood-alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit.

My hero.

Actually, I hate to do this, but this isn't irony. Irony is if a driver's ed teacher causes an accident.
But since accidents happen all the time, it wouldn't really be irony even then...

Down in Socorro you have to keep a 12 pack in the front seat, that way if you get pulled over you have enough to share with the cop.

From the article: Police spokesman John Francis said when officers responded, the man had "an odor of intoxication on his breath..."

It sounds like the reporter was quoting the spokesperson. If the reporter had spelled it 'wreaked', the editor would likely have corrected it.

My basketball coach was our driver's ed teacher.

He took the bus the wrong way down a one way street one year.

The next year he took me and other player to basketball camp. Driving home he got a speeding ticket. After "shiat", he said, "don't say a word". We just smiled silently.

According to the initial news report, this guy had a .30 BAC, was on his way home from work, and rear ended another vehicle at a stop light. Not only is a driving instructor, he's owner of the school!

/ submitted this last week with a much better headline

Lice In the Merkin: I see this as no different than any other DUI, basically harmless, and very unworthy of attention.

I suppose you are trolling, but just in case: since I moved to New Mexico about three years ago, there have been at least three major head-on collisions in the state involving multiple fatalities, caused by drunks driving the wrong way on Interstates. This is not "basically harmless."

When I was in high school, this happened to one of the Driver's Ed teachers. They apparently busted her while teaching the class, legally drunk. It was one week before the end of the semester.

As part of her sentencing, all of her students were given an immediate "F" on their report card for driver's ed. - and yes, that showed up against their GPA. Oh man, the parents were down in the principal's office screaming bloody murder and lawsuits that same day.

/ also had the basketball coach for driver's ed.

back in the day, it wasn't a 12 pack, just an oz. or two of quality dope, fresh from the mules driving up from el paso/juarez

ok so the day was a long damn time ago

I've got a better story. I used to be a public defender in northwest NM (Aztec/Farmington), and most of my cases were DWI related. One of the prosecutors I faced got a DWI up in Colorado. Not one of those borderline cases where you just miscalculate the sobering up time, but actually a BAC above .2 The guy prosecuting DWIs getting one himself, talk about irony.

I had a driver's ed teacher in HS named Mr. Reckage. Pronounce it. It's true.

BTW, he was SEXY!

Zero tolerance in California now. Blowing a .01 can land you in jail and demand thousands of dollars in fines under a provision called "wet and reckless." I'm not kidding. And the state's so broke, they're pulling over drivers like you wouldn't believe.

Our drives ed teacher (for the classroom portion, not behind the wheel) got a DUI the year after I took the class - he had to ride a bike to work and lost like 100 lbs (which he needed to do). Since this was a while ago and he lost his license, I am guessing it wasn't his first DUI.

Of course, drunk teachers at school was no big thing for us - my English teacher was so plowed one time she fell off her stool, then started laughing about it.

Man...I really want to move out of NM...this DWI crap is ridiculous. I've lived all over the country and have never seen it be such a huge problem as this state has.

There is a 50 - 60 percent chance the guy will get off based on state statistics. Yet to sell a 6 pack in my job to get me through college I have to attend a 5 hour long class and pay 30 bucks out of pocket. Oh, and should I sell to an undercover sting officer, it's a class 4 felony and a 500 dollar fine.

This state has the most MESSED UP liquor laws / enforcement.

Well I hate to say it, but you don't have to worry about the felony and fine if you follow procedure. If, however, you decide to break the local laws, you are therefore revoked of your right to biatch.

I can't say the same for the class and money, that does seem a tad excessive, though still nothing to write home about.
