He was delivering the bridge, and ran out of gas.

10 pounds of fail in a 5-pound bag?

Do you really know what it means,
To drive all those giant machines?
The sign that says, "Clearance"?
Not just for appearance!
Your rig's not a can of sardines!

PacManDreaming: ♫ Sign says clearance to the twelve foot line
But them chickens was stacked to thirteen-nine
Well we shot that tunnel at a hundred an' ten
Like gas through a funnel an' eggs through a hen
An' we took that top row of chickens off
Slicker 'n the scum off a Louisiana swamp ♫ (^)

I looked at Earl and his lip was curled and his leg was fried

/or something like that...

And that's why you're not allowed to have people back there when you're driving.

Cummings, from Newtown, N.D., was not issued any citations in the crash, Lawrence said.

I think the cops must have thought the sheer embarrassment was enough of a punishment.

Well, one good thing. With today's RV market, he'll be able to get a replacement for about two hundred bucks.

Want to hear the worst part about this?

Someone does it every other farking week from May to October. Not just campers, either; moving trucks, too. One even tore the cabin from the container.

I hate to be pedantic here, but shouldn't the headline be "Man doesn't drive 9-foot high camper under 8-foot high failroad bridge"?

Or am I misinterpreting the picture?

2009-08-19 07:55:41 AM
Part of the front of the camper made it under.

2009-08-19 08:01:17 AM
At least it was a septic tank on the back of the truck

...so they have that going for them

Truck RV camping is the only way to go. You get to sleep in the cool bunk over the cab, pretend your on Skylab when eating beenie-weenies or watching your VCR tape of Goonies, all with bears and seech right outside your 5/10" aluminum door.

Ah the good life

Lice In the Merkin: What is more absurd than him hitting the bridge is the fact that anyone would build an 8 ft bridge in the first place. What do they expect to happen? It is a lawsuit waiting to happen, and deservedly so.

Indeed. Better just having a railroad crossing.

No kidding. I don't think I've ever seen an 8 foot bridge before. Hell, just driving my car I'd probably instinctively slow down and wince while going under.

Man drives 9-foot high camper under 8-foot high failroad bridge

It was about that time that a 4 foot cop arrived with a 5 foot gun. A cop that must have once stood 6 foot tall, but was met at the bottom of a mountain by a flyin', singin', writin' weirdo freak.

seriously, 8 foot? that's a recipe for disaster

/bridge needs to get high

2009-08-19 10:09:30 AM
that bridge is extremely low, but i wonder how often this sort of thing happens to all those silly campers any given year?

2009-08-19 10:24:59 AM
I like how the girl at the back of the truck is wiping tears from her eyes. No, you can't have a camper on your truck. Not yours.

2009-08-19 10:40:18 AM
I think that bridge was built that short to help the local tow truck and collision shops.

your town sucks.
/an 8-foot bridge??
//SERIOUSLY ?? That has to be among the lowest in the COUNTRY. It's no wonder poor slobs get clipped by this thing.

In all seriousness:

What an incredible dumb-ass.

There's a railroad bridge in Bloomington, IN along one of the major east/west roads through the IU Campus. The 10th Street underpass is only 10' 6" and clearly marked with low clearance warnings a good distance from the bridge on either side of the road. The trouble is the bridge is situated within a hairpin switchback, so looking down the road from either direction all you see is a sharp turn to the left. This leads, every fall when the students arrive, to numerous box trucks, moving vans and semi-trailers ignoring the signs and driving right up to the entrance of the underpass then slamming on the brakes (if they're lucky) when they see the concrete monolith in their path. As I said earlier this is one of the major roads through campus and traffic is then completely snarled for blocks in either direction as the idiot driver gets out to scratch his head and wonder where that bridge came from and how he's going to back up 200 yards to find a place to turn around. I have no sympathy for these people as there is no excuse for this happening as the signs are very clear and placed well before the point-of-no-return. The only reason they're stuck there is they have teh dumb. My advice to all out there: Know your vehicle height and obey the posted warnings!

I saw a large "8'" sign in the picture. Most cars and pickups, minus camper, would fit under there just fine.

They likely can't raise the bridge because it is a railroad bridge. Trains cannot climb very steep grades. Don't know if lowering the road is an option.

FTA (picture caption): A family from North Dakota loads their belongings into their truck after their camper was sheared off on the railroad underpass on N. 21st Street between Montana Avenue and Minnesota Avenue.

Now, is it just me or does this make it sound like some kind of "When Railroad Bridges Attack" thing?
I mean, the camper wasn't just randomly sheared off. The less-than-brilliant driver ran smack into a stationary object, and fast enough to knock it clear off his truck.

Just observing.

Such bridges should have warnings with signs that themselves have parts such as flaps with limited clearance. And maybe blinking lights that activate. Not that such things will necessarily stop that truckload of chickens.

I like it. It's a fail test. If you can't pass the test, you deserve to have your crappy camper destroyed.

Considering that bridge is also the oldest paved roadway in America I don't think it's that stupid. Also; St. Louis? Billings compared to St. Louis is Heaven compared to St. Louis. You should see where I'm going with this...
