2003-03-04 01:18:14 AM
I live in Missouri and if you have full covrage insurance the state will pay for you deductable if you hit a deer. I don't care what you say but anytime i can get someone else to shell out the cash to fix my car I am all for it.

Both my parents fled from Missouri as soon as they could run away. They then met in Idaho. There's something very sad about that.

As soon as they admit responsibility for the $250 some lawyer hit them for full damages, time lost, suffering, mental trauma, etc, etc, etc...

2003-03-04 01:28:48 AM
I know that here in Idaho you can request the meat if you hit a deer/moose/elk. If you aren't quick enough claiming it, it is butchered and donated to the food banks/needy.

2003-03-04 01:30:02 AM
I'm sure that bill's gonna be a hit. I know a woman who'd support it but I can't defend'er.

I bow to the champion.

2003-03-04 01:33:19 AM
Basically, if you claim the animal it's your responsibility to haul it off and have it butchered (which isn't cheap, I think it runs around $50-100 for a whitetail, depending on where you go and how much they like you). If you don't take it the state pays for butchering and disposal.

2003-03-04 01:33:40 AM
I'd hit it!

at least in Ohio, where i used to live, if you hit a deer, the highway patrol would tag it and it was yours.

2003-03-04 01:43:59 AM
kansas roads are excellent by comparison...we go over there all the time to speed and hit deer.

2003-03-04 01:46:53 AM
What's bad is when you hit the deer doing 90.. down a city street, in heavy residential.. tell me something is wrong with this picture.

I have been trying to avoid hitting the deer, being a vegitarian.

(Not to mention what it would do to the bike.)

Now if a corn field jumps out in front of me. . .

In Texas, it's illegal to claim your kill. Also, I can personally testify that $250 won't begin to cover the damage a dear can do to a car. I nailed an a large buck at 65mph. $2500 in damage. The nice thing is that the insurance company doesn't consider this an 'accident' per se. In other words, it doesn't affect your driving record.

2003-03-04 02:12:01 AM
People hit deer all the time where Im from. $250 isnt gonna cover the cost of the paint let alone the body work. Deer are bigger than some ppl think evidently...when you hit one going 55.....its gonna REALLY mess us ure car.

They should just allow them to keep the deer instead. In Louisiana, if you hit a deer, you have to file it with ure insurance company as 'comprehensive damage' which makes ure insurance rate go up........and the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries confiscates the dead deer that just ruined ure car.

It's all good though...they SUPPOSEDLY donate the deer to the 'food for the poor' program...although EVERYONE knows that 90% of em end up in the game warden's freezer.

As you can prolly tell by my name...I am an avid hunter...using a Wichester Model 70 SG in .270Win caliber. When you shoot a deer with one of these..you usually aim for right behind the front shoulder to get a clean kill....the bullet passes thru the heart and both lungs. When skinning out a whitetail shot in this manner....i have found bruising in the REAR leg quarters from the shock of the bullet impact (roughly 1500 ft/lbs at 100 yrds give or take). I dont think a car can do much more considering.

As far as paying to have the animal butchered...that's for pansies. If you kill it....YOU oughta clean it.

I know this is a bit off topic, but in the subject of hunting, NOTHING makes me more pissed off than people that show disrespect for the animal they just killed. Rifle or car, you just killed an animal...at least you can sow respect to the creature whose life you just took....IMO

LA270Hunter

The thing is, most people who hit deer with their car won't have the skills, or the presence of mind, to dress and butcher the deer properly. Odds are they aren't going to be someone who hunts enough and butchers their own game to begin with, plus you then add in the fact that they may have serious injuries, they totaled their car, the police are all over them, etc. and they probably don't stand a chance of doing it properly.

2003-03-04 02:29:39 AM
And I completely agree with you about certain hunters. People who hunt for the rack only should be hunted themselves. If you don't want the meat give it to someone who does, but don't kill it and leave it there to rot.

2003-03-04 02:30:12 AM
Here in TN we have the "Roadkill Law" where we get to keep what we hit.

I remember being a kid looking out my dad's car window thinking "Look a deer!" Bam! My dad's month-old car was off to the shop.

2003-03-04 02:39:35 AM
I'm just glad that most hunters are respectful and good at what they do. At least around here. There are always the assholes who shoot horses/cows/dogs...but thankfully I've never had a problem with that.
