when the vehicle unexpectedly moved forward.

Weird. I expect my automatic transmission vehicle that is on and in drive to move forward when I take my foot off the brake.

2009-08-13 11:36:20 AM
FTFA:Police Insp. Frank Reuser said traffic cops are investigating what caused the vehicle to move forward.

Lou?

It's a toss-up on whether to blame women drivers or SUVs for this one.

/would you qualify that as a launch problem or a design problem?

Budai said it appeared the victim had been leaning her torso out of the open driver's door to access the ticket dispenser when the vehicle unexpectedly moved forward.

and

Police Insp. Frank Reuser said traffic cops are investigating what caused the vehicle to move forward.

Umm, why are they bothering to investigate this? Is there an epidemic of cars becoming self aware and spontaneously moving in Canada? It is not unexpected nor in need of investigation as to why when you take your foot off the brake does a car move.

When I first learned to drive this happened to me at a toll booth. Too far away so I leaned and let up on the brake, car started moving forward. This woman probably took her foot off the brake completely.

All I could think of was the "death by elevator" scene from 6 feet under. Now THAT was a horrible way to go.

At first I thought this was a farking repeat (poppity), then I looked at the date of the accident. Apparently this isn't as unusual as it sounds.

canadianloon: OniNeko: This is why it's a good idea to put the vehicle in park when you take your foot off the brake.

Terrible this had to happen. My thoughts go out to her friends and family.

No they don't. She was stupid and didn't know how to drive. My thoughts go out to the 20 or so cars lined up behind her who had to wait to get in/out of the parking garage.

If they had to get out of the parking garage, they should sue her family for the 5 extra dollars they had to pay.

Parking is expensive in Ottawa, I don't know what it is like in Calgary.

So he broke your hand, dislocated your shoulder, and wrecked your car and you took 500 bucks to keep it quiet? I doubt the 500 even covered the repair bill

I don't see why every single reply to canadianloon is this biatchy. Was he really that far off the mark? I mean, it was an "accident" caused by sheer stupidity. Judging by the lack of common sense, and the fact that she was driving an SUV, it's not too far of a stretch to assume that she was on a cell phone, putting on makeup, and scarfing down some White Castle to boot.

So a Canadian woman driving a SUV was not paying attention because she was trying to talk on the cell phone, put on her makeup, take a parking ticket, and throw down some ham at the same time has taken her foot off the brake and lodged herself in between her door and car frame, causing her to perish. It's a shame she didn't take her snowmobile to work, or carpooled with the eskimo's or taken a dog sled. She may have survived, eh?

If you have to lean that far out to reach the damn machine, just open your door the rest of the way and walk to it. It will only take an extra couple seconds, and it won't kill you in a disturbingly amusing way that reinforces existing stereotypes.

Leonard_Cohen: For 5 years my drivers side power window was broken and being the cheapskate that I am, I refused to pay $400 to fix it.
Whenever I would be in a parking lot with the automated ticket machine, I would always put it in park and most of the time I would poorly judge the alignment and I would have to get out of the car to get the ticket. Used to piss off a lot of people when the lot was busy.
Now that that I got a new car, I'm rediscovering drive-thru's.

I have to piss people off because the code pad to get in my apt complex cannot be reached no matter how close to the island you get. I have to physically get out of the car every damn time because some asshat didn't consider convenience when he put it in.

There was little to no vehicle damage, and I popped my shoulder back in. As far as the hand goes, I did not know that it was even broken until the next day when it started swelling.
