You'd think Obama is smiling because of the great personal story of this man's life...however, as a white sox fan, I'm pretty sure Obama just made fun of him since the Indians traded Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez and mailed it in the rest of the season.

I originally posted this in the redlit thread about Joe Medicine Crow.

From wiki:

Joe Medicine Crow joined the army, becoming a scout in the 103rd Infantry Division. Whenever he went into battle, he wore his war paint beneath his uniform and a sacred eagle feather beneath his helmet. Without realizing it, Medicine Crow completed all four tasks required to become a war chief. He touched a living enemy soldier (1) and disarmed an enemy (2) when he turned a corner and found himself face to face with a young German soldier:

"The collision knocked the German's weapon to the ground. Mr. Crow lowered his own weapon and the two fought hand-to-hand. In the end Mr. Crow got the best of the German, grabbing him by the neck and choking him. He was going to kill the German soldier on the spot when the man screamed out "momma." Mr. Crow then let him go.

He also led a successful war party (3) and stole an enemy horse (4), making a midnight raid to steal the horses from a battalion of German officers (as he rode off, he sang a traditional Crow honor song.) He is the last member of the Crow tribe to become a war chief.

Damn, that's just farking cool.

What's funny about that is it's basically a myth.

There are no records, as I recall, of disease-ridden blankets being deliberately given to the OIA (Original Illegal Aliens)to infect them with disease.

Most of the devastation due to disease suffered by the Native's occurred many years before America was a glint in anyone's eye. The early explorers Spanish, French and Dutch brought the disease over from Europe. It's nice to see some Native's getting some big recognition considering the amount of blood they themselves shed to help create the US as a free and independent country.
Hell, it was The Half King under the command of a young and green George Washington that slaughtered French Ambassadors to begin the damn Seven Years war.

I am afraid you are wrong.

As Snopes fully indicates, there was a discussion via the correspondence of two men about such a deliberate infection taking place.

However, there is no evidence of such a thing occuring.

So I still stand by my statement. There is no evidence of blankets being deliberately given to natives to infect them.

Colonel Henry Bouquet was a pig.
Ecuyer, pig.
Forbes, a fumbler.
Braddock, a captain wrong-way peachfuzz.
In short, they all took their "respetable" places in "American" history as "Heros" yet one cannot deny they were but mercenaries for a foreign throne, bent on plundering resources to secure their domestic glory.
No better than Cortez.

Yes, one British general in colonial times, did.

The myth that this was widespread policy among the U.S. Army was a lie perpetrated by Ward Churchill and gobbled up by the same folks that buy dreamcatchers and other nonsense.

This just in, Europe was a disease infested shiathole so those who survived had developed decent immunities to some terrible things. Groups of people who lived in isolated parts of the world didn't have the same immunities. Slaves were brought into the Caribbean to replace the local workers who died off pretty much as a people due to "everyday" illnesses the Europeans brought with them.

Right... just a coincidence that smallpox broke out among the native tribes at the same time Amherst was discussing the tactics in his letters.

...that Vermine ... have forfeited all claim to the rights of humanity"

Was it a widespread practice? Seems doubtful, but Amherst's contempt for the native population was well documented.
