I uh...well, uh...

I can manage to say that I'm reading "God is Not Great" by Hitchens and FFS he practically talked about this very topic in the book multiple times.

2009-08-12 09:48:51 PM
Hmm...upon further examination, I call shenanigans/satire.

Poe, eh?

"My daughter suggested that it was funny," said John Copeland, whose 7-year-old daughter attends summer camp there. "She shouldn't be talking to me about this. Now I'm forced to explain genetics to her, and why the Bible doesn't say anything about it."

Talk about vile and offensive.

"Everybody is entitled to their own opinion regarding what art is," said Garrotte. "If this piece weren't visible to passersby and available for children to play on, I would not have a problem with it."

You know how sometimes you think you're reading an Onion article, and then you realize it's serious, and then the red mist descends?

You know what is really sad? I had to double check it was satire because I know people this stupid.

It's going to be a long, long adolescence for your daughter.

Okay, this is Berkley and not Okla? Huh.

2009-08-12 09:55:28 PM
Why would these morons hang out near a RESEARCH UNIVERSITY if they hate science. Berkeley actually has reserved parking for Nobel Laureates.

Brb, RAGE

k, back... anyone has a right to hate science as part of their religious tradition, but really shouldn't expect everyone else to share their complete break with reality.

Ah, okay, satire. Still...

Hmm, good catch.

I decided it was actually plausible.

Mostly because I know people who took their kids out of school and homeschooled them so they wouldn't be taught the sinful 'vlution

Well, it's about damned time.

see, there you go again. People think Berkeley is just full of leftwing hippe stoner types. But, um... you gonna pass that thing?

Oh, the troll is potent.

Satire or not, I do find the sculpture to be highly offensive.

I mean, by what right and logic can they model a phosphate-deoxyribose backbone as a simple helical cylindrical tube while only adding any structural "detail" to the nitrogenous bases?? I mean, you can't even actually tell that it is deoxyribose! It's disgusting! You can't even tell which end is 3' and which end is 5'. How will the polymerases even know which way to go?? WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE POLYMERASES?!?!

If I were there, I'd be organizing protests! THE STRUCTURE OF THE PHOSPHATE-PENTOSE BACKBONE SHALL NOT BE IGNORED!!!!

Yes, I saw that. Well done there. :)

Sure, let's replace the DNA sculpture with the Michelangelo's David, some other nudes of adult women & children of both sexes. Then the parents will only have to explain anatomy to them.

Gwendolyn: You know what is really sad? I had to double check it was satire because I know people this stupid.

Roger Ebert talked about this recently.

Especially with the pandemonium coming out of the health care debates, there just is no putting stupid past people any more. You have to assume that the most horrendously stupid thing you've heard, see, or read about people doing, was actually done with complete lack of irony or self-awareness, until proven otherwise.

And we stretch it to the breaking point every day.

Just goes to show you the dumbass liberals in Berkley are prone to worrying about not letting their kids see offensive things, too. Wonder how many are closet Bible readers hiding behind a wall/closet door of shame, praying they don't go to Hell.

2009-08-12 11:15:50 PM
OK, this is evidently satire.

On the other hand, this really does sound like a great idea for a piece of school playground equipment.

Now, which local school still has a budget to buy a starving artist some materials and a few months worth of Ramen....

Satire or not, I've had an idea for a while, but just don't have the time to devote to it. I'd love to organise a group of people to help manufacture new outrage every day. 30-50 would be sufficient, but more would obviously be better.
Start off slow and reasonably level headed, but gradually turn up the crazy until even the crazies start to wonder who the fark these idiots are. I'd like to get it to the point where the average person starts questioning whether the outrage really exists or whether newspapers are just enjoying the "controversy", however I'm not that optimistic...

So... is it okay to lock your bike to this thing, in the 100% non-satire world?

Because it looks like a bike rack. A very NICE bike rack, at that.

I've been thinking the same thing. I'm interested in seeing how quickly a rumor would spread through the right wing echo chamber. It would make a great experiment.

2009-08-13 12:11:21 AM
I want the people responsible for the sculpture to come out and say "we are people of god, doing his work, under his guidance.. he told us to make this".

then see what the dummies say about that.

Hell, i always want people to say "i'm doing gods work, he led me down this path" when someone does scientific work that fundies dont believe in.

watch their head asplode

I know a lot of religious nutjobs, and none of them actually say things like this. Are today's satirists so out of touch with those they wish to mock?

In 2006, The Ovum, a sculpture of a human unfertilized egg by Sonoma-area artist Nabry Gussom and installed at the Petaluma Community Center, generated complaints over its super-realistic undulations and dampness.

Anybody reading that and not realizing something was up has to be slow.

2009-08-13 01:12:21 AM
Come on.

I knew it was satire from the headline. Only a statue of Bush II would induce that level of outrage in Berkeley, aka "Berzerklib."
