Obviously wasn't adept at the up and downs of the amusement park business.
2003-03-02 10:43:39 PM
Actually, I'd say he's QUITE adept at the downs, somewhat less so with the ups.

I wonder if Mike had anything to do with this link getting posted. For the Farkers who don't know about the Admin Mike here is his profile. From what I have seen about mike on Fark he seems like a cool guy. He seems to like roller coasters. Me, I am scared of heights, but the fact I was aircrew in the Navy may mean I am self loathing. That is another story.
2003-03-03 12:42:44 AM
am i the only one sick of 'darwin' every time someone does something stupid that puts their life in danger?

yeah i probably am
2003-03-03 12:45:23 AM
Ok, first off, Darwin awards are for people who bring on their deaths by their own stupidity. This guy died because some other moron started the train, not him.
2003-03-03 12:45:34 AM
Backgroundnoise, yes you are.

Say we need more stuff like this.
2003-03-03 12:46:06 AM
2003-03-03 12:49:54 AM
Nope, not a Darwin award winner.
2003-03-03 12:50:47 AM
Well I guess we still aren't sure if it was the guys fault that the train was running in the first place. But even if it was an accident, I think its...

Time to chlorinate the gene pool!
2003-03-03 12:51:33 AM
I would hate to be the guy BELOW the track.
In the food court.
Munching my tacos.
That would be a most unwelcome side dish.
2003-03-03 12:51:34 AM
Just read the article, and no Darwin Award material here. Move along people, nothing to see here.

This isn't even remotely funny or interesting. Just sad. It's not clear if this guy was a dumbass or not. It is clear the submitter and one other person is.
2003-03-03 12:59:08 AM
Jeepers creepers.
2003-03-03 01:00:05 AM
This guy died because some other moron started the train, not him.

Or maybe the train was inhabited by some evil unseen ghost who wanted to kill this man for no good reason.
/running out of ideas
2003-03-03 01:04:53 AM
Saw this on the local news here tonight, the guys daughter was balling her eyes out. It was pretty sad.
2003-03-03 01:06:01 AM
What a dumb bastard! Just for the fact that he didn't even think about saying, "Hmmm, lets see, if I'm going to fix this problem with the rollar coster, maybe I should have them shut it down!" You's amazing that scientests have found the fear gene, but have yet to discover the idiot gene....

::hangs head::
2003-03-03 01:07:21 AM
Rule Two: Treat EVERY firearm as if it were loaded!
2003-03-03 01:11:29 AM
I don't see anywhere that it says some other moron started it, etc. That would be logical, which makes me hesitant to apply it. I will withhold judgement on the squished's darwin worthyness...
2003-03-03 01:12:34 AM
Everyone sure is quick to call this guy stupid. The article wasn't enen that escriptive. It just says he was hit and died. Maybe he did tell them to stop running it. maybe it was supposed to be closed, i mean why would they be running a broken coaster. All in all not funny and not worth a fark post.
2003-03-03 01:13:02 AM
Cretzal: I don't think he would do something that stupid. There's nothing in the article that screams Darwin award winner. I need more proof.
2003-03-03 01:16:26 AM
Also, imagine if a friend or family member saw this posted under dumbass much less what was said in the thread.
This should be removed in my opinion.
2003-03-03 01:17:03 AM
OMFG!!! Someone was doing his job! What a stupid moron. Only stupid people do their jobs. He deserves the Darwin Award.
2003-03-03 01:20:15 AM
uhhhhh to be that guy
2003-03-03 01:20:30 AM
2003-03-03 01:21:05 AM
It is all fun and games until someone gets hurt!
2003-03-03 01:26:48 AM
I think that this is exactly the reason we must register any and all roller coasters. It is clear that roller coasters a re a danger not only to those who ride them but also any who are foolish enough to repair/operate them. if rollercoasters are outlawed, only outlaws will have rollercoasters. Also, we will be free of asshats who insist on setting "Most rides on a rollercoaster world records." Thank you.
2003-03-03 01:28:43 AM
RandyJohnson, you sound like those guys on irc:
hotsailor4u: hey ladies
hotsailor4u: a/s/l?
firemanNY25: hey dude stop cramping my style

i wonder if this darwin fellow worked at "fashionable male"?
2003-03-03 01:30:26 AM
Does anyone want to see my Fireman?
2003-03-03 01:34:56 AM
I dont know about small roller coasters, but at the large one I worked at, they had two buttons (in different places) that has to be pressed at the same exact time before the train would move. This would prevent a single sneaky person from doing something if stupid they happened to stumble upon the keys.

Also, when the coaster was being powered up, a very loud tone would go off, to give everyone fair warning. I hope even the smallest of coasters have that.
2003-03-03 01:42:43 AM
Ok folks, there's a couple of conditions for it to be a Darwin award:

A). A person has to do something incredibly stupid that either kills themself or otherwise removes their ability to reproduce.

B). Do this BEFORE they do manage to reproduce.

Natural selection. Its whats for dinner.
2003-03-03 01:42:48 AM who will ante up?
2003-03-03 01:54:52 AM
This strikes me as NOT FUNNY.
2003-03-03 02:09:53 AM
jeff - did it actually say someone else started it or was it still going when he was stepping onto the tracks... cuz that would be a bit of a difference.
2003-03-03 02:20:47 AM
I don't think this is a Darwin candidate. Not a strong enough case for the tag.
2003-03-03 02:23:49 AM
It's all right, the guy was 43 years old and he was ASSISTANT MANAGER of a ROLLER COASTER. IN THE MALL.

He was gonna kill himself any day now anyway.

/typical fark asshole
2003-03-03 02:35:52 AM
I worked at a rollercoaster this summer. This is either extreme stupidity on his part or extreme negligence on everyone else's part. He either forgot to make sure it was locked/tagged out and that he had the key, or the other workers completely ignored the lock/tag out. It was probably a little bit of everyone being lax because nothing interesting or bad ever happens. We almost had a major accident for the same reason.
2003-03-03 02:40:27 AM

Several thoughts.

- So you're working on a ROLLER COASTER. It NEEDS REPAIRS. There are a certain number of people who are able to TURN IT ON. I would say it's Darwin worthy. In my line of work, we deal with huge wattages, and we tell the engineers on duty not to touch a breaker when we've got a box open. If someone flips a breaker (which is not only in a separate room, but on a separate floor) you will die a 720-ampere death. Period.

[image from too old to be available]I guess he didn't mind 'getting it from behind.' muahahahahahahah...

/Do not pass go, do not collect $200, go directly to hell

2003-03-03 02:44:10 AM
Ok... he would receive an Honourable Mention at least guyz.. c'mon!
2003-03-03 02:54:32 AM
he was probably Mexican, hence all the funny jokes about his death
2003-03-03 03:32:54 AM
is this imdb? what are you on about, topher99? :P
2003-03-03 03:37:04 AM
does the AP care at all about the quality of writers submitting stories thru their service? this example of quality newsgathering had to be written by an 11 year old sitting in front of his tv and smoking pot for the first time. nice how the first three paragraphs end:

..according to a broadcast report.
..WJBK-TV reported.
.. the station said.

how did that call to the police station go?

OFFICER: livonia p.d.
REPORTER: um.. yeah.. um, can i talk to someone about the dude who got killed at the mall?
REPORTER: um.. ok. bye

When Nicky first comes up to to Earth's Surface he steps onto subway tracks with a fast arriving train. Without knowledge of the above world he quickly is hit by the fast moving subway and is sent back to where he came. I don't want to give too much away for those who haven't had the pleasure of seeing this movie but it happens more than once. BTW what is IMDB?
2003-03-03 03:43:56 AM
btw.. this is the ride that killed the guy. i bet that bastard python still has that grin on his face. he's a coldhearted snake...

god damn Jill Billy that was out of left field... nearly fell out of my chair laughing...
2003-03-03 04:09:13 AM
lacks the subtlety of Darwin nominee.

however, definitely a contender in the "didn't expect to die like that" category.
2003-03-03 04:12:50 AM
Hyuk, hyuk, people dying is funny. Let's laugh at cripples too.
2003-03-03 04:15:39 AM
Darwin-worthy if he had lived. Sad, since he was killed instantly. Can the poster explain the humor to me? I don't get it.

Used to work on the roller-coaster for annual travelling fair 'Funderland'. Three weeks around Christmas for three years 91-93.

One year, whilst re-painting the tracks during annual maintainance, some bright spark had painted over the contact surfaces - where the wheels meet the track.

Of course they had sanded the shiat out of it, and greased it like a mofo... but depending on load and temperature, the carriages would occasionally slow-down enough not to make it over the last incline.

So, January bank-holiday - the busiest day for Funderland. Two hours past opening and they still can't get it over the hump. My co-workers fill the 16 seats whilst the gruff Scottish engineer applies grease where he feels it's required - That's right - he is wandering around the interior of the track, and occasionally clambering up the pylons... as the carriages thunder past!.

I have been left to tend to the (increasingly angry) queue, when one of my co-workers BOUNDS past me, heading in the general direction of the front office. Turns out the Old Bastard was thwacked on the noggin by the front carriage as it rounded the last curve.

He wasn't killed, but was doubtless diminished significantly by his encounter. All I saw was the large red stain being hastily covered with sawdust. For the rest of the day, I fended off frustrated fair-goers and curious radio journalists, stifling my giggles at the novelty of it all.

As an unsolicited bonus, the four attendants in the front carriage were so traumatised, they quit the next day. Serves them right for leaving me with the queue :)

Oh, and the coaster seemed to run no problem after that. Ahh memories!
