Humm something stolen. In prison. hummm.

This is not the stolen painting but damn the man was a genius. If you ever dare venture into the cliche that is Florida plan a stop at The Dali Museum in St Pete.

"We can't say definitively that it was a copy," Antenen said. "But everyone's opinion was that what was hanging yesterday was not real."

In other articles, they note that the copy was stapled up where the framed original used to be. Yeah, it must have been hard to tell.

You know how Dali did his paintings during his Surrealist stage?

He took a hallucinogen and painted what he saw.

2003-03-02 03:28:14 PM
Most of his paintings look like an Arkieboy Photoshop ...
Has anyone ever seen Arkieboy and Dali together at the same time? Hmmmmmmm

2003-03-02 03:28:18 PM
stolen by the guards no less

Hmm, the several pics I've seen of his are like tripped out Escher.

About the stolen painting... was it the lighter color they noticed first, or the GOLD FRAME THAT WASN'T THERE ANYMORE!

I'm still trying to figure out why a original dali was hanging in a prison.

My money is that the tossed salad man stole it.

I have seen a lot of his stuff, he is my favourite painter... The guy is really hmmm... cool... Anyone know how I can get to see his movies?

"He took a hallucinogen and painted what he saw."

Rubbish. That is an old art-school phony story. I challenge anyone to take an hallucinogen and see things such as appear in Dali's paintings. I wish I knew of an hallucinogen that did that. The closest I suppose would be the dreams caused by opium, but his phenominal output and poverty at that time suggests he wasn't a user.

Dali's paintings, particularly the official surrealist period, used a pallette of imagery that eventually evolved into a sort of symbolic language representing the artist's personal issues. This is one reason why the surrealists kicked him out, because they thought his technique was not truly Surrealism, which is supposed to be devoid of conscious symbolic meaning (also they thought he was an ass).

For me, Magritte is the superior Surrealist, but Dali's technical mastery of the painting surface is second to none, he's on the level of the old masters.

blah. Back to my bong.

"The sketch, untitled, was displayed in the jail's dining room for 16 years before being moved to the lobby, where only officers and visitors are allowed."

Dali made this painting for the inmates of Rikers Island yet only guards and visitors can see it. If you ask me this painting deserved to get stolen.

Dandamanfl - I agree, I visited the museum in Florida years ago. The back wall had what appeared to several different cool paintings/pictures. But from across the room all the painting/pictures became a huge picture of Abe Lincoln.
