"What scares us about this is that the church was all locked down from the outside, so there was no means of getting out of the church for these four adults and the child," Chong said.

It's been over 20 years since I've been in a church, but I remember that they had water fountains. And padded pews to sleep in. Was this church airtight or something?

I don't think that's the point. What if there was a fire? Were these people being held against their will?

Also, were there no telephones in the church? Nobody had a cellphone? Did this take place in 1984? Also, most churches have a bell, they could have...

/oh, never mind.

This story goes well beyond weird into surreal.

You pitch this scene to David Lynch, and he'd just say "What the hell? That's too damn weird for one of my movies."

Who needs windows when you have a loving God to send an angel to assault a cab driver and save you?

Seriously, who's the good guy here, from a divine perspective? It's not like the cab driver was TRYING to free those people.

Who robs a cab driver by choking them WHILE they're driving the car, honestly?

And a telephone. Most churches have landlines.

Are you guys dumbtarded? It is a derelict old church. I would assume no power or water, but they might still have been active. In any case, what happened is clear. They were in the middle of being smuggled in to the US.

Well, the guy WAS trying to kill the cab driver over some money.

The cabby is the angel 'cause he was just doing an honest day's work.

Exactly the same thing happened to me only last week. Freaky. I'm going to have to quit choking taxi drivers.

Two of the three churches I serve (rural Nova Scotia) have no running water, no phone, and no bell. On the plus side, they do have windows, doors that open, and no hijacked taxis crashing into them.

Don't most cabs have that glass partition thingy between the driver and passengers? Or perhaps the robber was sitting in the front? Maybe the driver, noticing that his assailant was not properly seat-belted, deliberately crashed the cab in the hope that the impact would launch the latter through the windshield.

The five people were of Caribbean descent and taken to Mount Vernon Hospital Center as a precaution, he said.

That is what pisses me off. As a precaution for what exactly? Who takes uninjured people to the hospital? So they get charged with unneeded emergency services. grr

/this really gets me

"Locked in" is obviously a hastily constructed cover story for whatever was really going on in the church.
