2) IIRC, isn't there a smoking ban in Vancouver now?

There is a smoking ban, so in the head shops and cafes you can light up a spliff, but not a ciggy... It's weird.

I lived in Vancouver for 2 years. In the summer, it's paradise. In the winter, I dunno, I guess it depends on the person, but not seeing the sun for (what felt like) months on end was pretty damn depressing.

thats a whole lotta BS...
what cafes let you light up a spliff?
i would say zero.

you sir are either a liar or a buffoon.

They don't openly say you can puff a J, they just turn the other way.

The only time I was ever told to stop was when there was a police presence outside.

I'm sure it's downright fantastic, but my coworker is a Canadian from Vancouver and it's all he farking talks about. Constantly. He hates the fact that he had to move to the US, and Michigan in particular, because his wife got a great job here and she makes more money than he does and it's the worst thing to have ever happened to him and so he consoles himself by waxing poetically about Vancouver over and over and over again whenever possible and after a full year of this, I just don't farking care anymore, dude.

... and spending a day at Lake Michigan doesn't shut him up? Or the fact that it costs ~80% less than Vancouver to live here comfortably?

I mean damn, Canada is awesome, but I just bought a nice house with land for a lower price than a 1-bedroom crap apartment in Vancouver.

/ Or Toronto, for that matter.
// Dunno about Calgary, haven't been there long enough.

I don't think in the 6 years he's lived here that he'd ever been to Lake Michigan, before I convinced him to go this summer

But otherwise, no. It doesn't matter that he's got a great job (where he obviously couldn't get a good enough one there), great health insurance, a nice neighborhood or an excellent school system for his 2 kids, or that he lives in a nice city in SE Michigan where the winters really aren't so bad as they are in the rest of the state, none of it. He's a miserable person most of the time and has few friends here.

He was also convinced last summer that Bush was going to suspend the elections and crown himself dictator and we were all going to be slaves of the state. srsly.

taobananaboat: but not seeing the sun for (what felt like) months on end was pretty damn depressing

I used to deliver the Province (newspaper for the area) and I had to get the paper run completed before 6.30

So as a "kid" I saw a lot of Vancouver sunrises :-) kinda weird how it was mostly covered with cloud moments after and yet still presented itself as I rode home from the run.

The_Sponge: Dear Vancouver,

Please bring back Expo '86.

Sincerely,

The_Sponge

P.S. - Yes, I know that you'll have to rename it to Expo '09, or something like that.

Dear The_Sponge,

Expo '09 has been cancelled in favour of Winter Olympics 2010. We encourage you to visit next February.

Sincerely,

Vancouver

I imagine you did. I just bought a second floor, 588 sqft. apartment for $245K. It's near a station of our mass transit train station, and it's a decent, concrete building. But yeah, real estate prices are absolutely insane here. For a 375 sqft studio apartment, in or near the downtown core, you're looking in the low to mid 300s.

I lived for a year in Vancouver. It was great, and I wanted to stay permanently, but immigration had other ideas.

When the rains came, I holed up with a cute East Indian girl and much reefer. Portland Al's blues record store completed the picture.

Ah, hell. Now that you've replied, it looks like I insulted your apartment. And I'm too nice a person to do that -- in all probability, your place looks nicer than mine. (Previous owners had some interesting ideas regarding wallpaper color schemes.)

But... a two-story, 3bd/1bth house on 6 acres with a damn nice pole barn, a goat, and a couple of chickens, for $140K. Fifteen minutes outside of a 500,000-person city with some decent restaurants and shopping, and an hour away from Lake Michigan. For this, I will hop on a plane and visit lovely Vancouver and enjoy myself thoroughly, without scrambling to make my mortgage payment.

/ and if we get some decent health care in this country, it'll be one less thing to mock Americans about.

THE ARTICLE IS COMPLIMENTING VANCOUVER.

I am a Vancouverite, proud of my city, but either way, if you get this sensitive over someone's opinion of your city, you likely have a lot of sand irritating other parts of your vagina.

Again, this article is actually complimenting Vancouver. He is saying that Vancouver is everything his hometown SHOULD be, and he resents his town because of how awesome Vancouver is.

I've lived all over and I think Vancouver is one of the best places in the world to live - great multiculturalism, progressive attitudes, access to the world, every natural environment you can think of less than 2 hours away.... it's just great. But if someone else doesn't see it that way, it's fine with me.

It can't be more depressing than Bremerton, WA.

2009-08-07 04:18:38 PM
LittleSmitty: I bet it's a little slice of Heaven compared to Florida

I've lived in both. I'd go back to Florida in second. I'd only go back to Vancouver at gunpoint, and even then I'd have to consider taking the bullet instead.

There's a cure for the depression in Vancouver. It's called weed and Asian chicks. Take two of each and STFU.

/The drive from Chicago to Denver will make you lose your will to live

As a former resident of Wichita,KS, I will say it looked NOTHING like this. Maybe before the winter freeze, but then again, every place before the winter freeze looks this way.

How true is that.
Portland is bad enough then bam! lovely Vancouver WA.
I guess the only good thing is that you now have a highway speed limit over 55 mph.

Moved from Vancouver to Victoria as a kid. The weather on the island is generally much better than Van. Weekend trips to Vancouver for urban activities make up for the lack of nightlife in Victoria.

They film the Twilight movies there, someone probably already said that I didn't read the whole forum, therefore, to this sick and twisted woman who would like to do illegal things to Robert Pattinson, it's a wonderful place.

Too lazy to go through but I finally clicked through and the reason he called it the most depressing city was because he had to fly back into San Diego and leave it behind and it was basically a rant against the San Diego city council.

also your use of "and cafes" suggests that you can just roll up up to any ol' place and spark a fatty with your other unemployed 420 douche crew without fear of legal problems...this is not the case.
