Fizics: This "kid" was operating a business and making huge profits without paying taxes, I don't see what the problem is with shutting her down. I'm just concerned that there won't be an audit.

Humor?

I'm sure the kid will find a way to profit from the shutdown situation. After all, when life gives you lemons...

oh wait
oops

I'm not sure about the whole "Busy" street thing. I guess I'd have to see it.

Re: Lemonade stands in general

-I approve of the parent standing their for safety sake (similar to girl scout cookie selling)
-License to sell for a child is asinine. No way around that. You're being a douche, stop.
-Customers getting "sick" off of product. That might happen. I would suggest setting up in your neighborhood where everyone knows you. Will buy a pity glass and forgive you if you get them sick. (Lemonade would probably be rather hard to get sick off of actually...)

Re: Reason for selling lemonade

-So long as it's legal I don't care what her motivation is. That's really up to her isn't it? You don't like it, don't buy any lemonade. Real simple.

Forget the Nanny State. This is like 1984. How sad to see a once great nation reduced to this.

"Vice Mayor Philip Vandegrift said a compromise -- possibly asking lemonade stand operators to pay a nominal fee"

Yes, that's the "compromise" we were looking for!
Pay the government!
What a massive douche.

AbbeySomeone: They are in California - family may have had a lemon tree in their yard.
Good for them for teaching the girl to do something other than sitting on her ass playing video games.

I ought to put my tweens to work. Orange tree, lemon tree and cherry tree. Too bad I don't live far enough south for a lime tree. Those rock.

onebadgungan: shadesofblack: Oh, wonderful. Now she's probably completely soured on the idea of free enterprise.

Sounds like she had a pretty sweet deal. She seems to know how to squeeze the most out of an opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised to see her standing up for herself and taking her slice of America.

I'd like to invite you to a lemon party.

Some local kids set up their shop along a slightly-busy two-lane road around here...at the top of a hill, so not great visibility, and no shoulder so you can't pull over even if you want to. Zero foot traffic. And of course they ran out into the road to try and flag people down.

Concerned and thirsty citizen that I am, I drove into their housing complex to park, walked way uphill to their stand, bought a lemonade (turned out to be some orange-pineapple thing straight out of Safeway but it wasn't bad). The kids got all excited and said I was their second customer in half an hour. Then, the youngest kid in the group piped up and said "I was the first!"...

AWWWwwww.

FTFA:Richard Garcia, a Tulare code enforcement officer, happened to be at the same intersection to remove illegal signs left behind by someone selling tetherball poles.

There was no benefit to shutting down the lemonade stand. None.

What's next, cracking down on the local 12 year old kid who is mowing without a license?
Maybe fining babysitters for failing to pay estimated tax?

Please. If we are paying officials to regulate children's front yard businesses, we deserve all the economic shiat we are getting. Wow.

Conservatives will go to any lengths to mess with people over trivia, but then when some kid goes outside the lines it is suddenly okay. I say we should euthanize the girl and her whole family. It's the only way to be sure. All lawbreakers are the scum of the earth, and lemonade stands are gateway commerce that lead to whoring.

FTA: "Illegal tetherball poles." Illegal tetherball poles?! Oh, no!

Didn't this same exact thing happen somewhere else last week? But seriously, that cop wasn't really trying to be a dick like every cop ever, he was on an illegal tetherball pole patrol with his "task force" and couldn't ignore the blatant criminality that was the little girl's lemonade stand.

And that is why I laugh whenever I hear about cops getting shot. Overpaid retarded pussies.

If you actually read the article, and pay attention to what you're reading, this is fine. Seriously. You really shouldn't let people sell things at busy intersections. Front yard, sure, no problem.

Obviously the letter of the law is pretty silly, but that's why they plan to change it. That's a lot better than just not enforcing the rules, that undermines the whole system.

Here's the intersection in question.

Failing_Junk: You could find out for yourself with a minimum of intellectual curiosity.

This is how it works: You make unsupported assertion. Another person calls you on it. You support your assertion.

You don't put the burden of supporting said assertion on your accuser.

In most cases, but in this case Failing Junk is correct. look it up yourself, you might learn something, although I am somewhat appalled that there are people so ignorant of history that they do not know that all regulation of business, originating as far back as the middle ages, (really earlier if you count the classical ancient world) consisted of appeals for either monopoly power, or the forming of guilds to regulate and stifle competition.

"to remove illegal signs left behind by someone selling tetherball poles."

One can actually make money selling tetherball poles?
Did the game pick up in popularity thanks to Napoleon Dynamite or something?
Is this a regional phenomenon? I live in New York, and I don't think I've ever seen a tetherball pole.

Just like to point out that in the UK you don't need a licence to start or run a business. Apart from a few types like selling alcohol, running a fleet of trucks etc.

And we don't have HOAs either!

Come to the UK! Land Of The Free!

Chelsea Clinton Is Carrot Top's Lost Twin: Failing_Junk: The purpose of licensing is to reduce competition.1

1citation needed.

Uh...actually it is. Bike Taxis (working for tips) are finally becoming semi common here in tucson. A friend and I have built our own. We have now learned that someone with a lot of money has bought a number of prefab ones and is pushing the city council to require a license for them. They are essentially trying to cock-block the competition that was here before them.

Now this poses a ton of problems for the council. How do you differentiate between a rickshaw and a tandem. Giving friends rides versus giving rides for tips. Its not a business. You are certainly trying to make money but as long as you don't have a rate and don't demand money, its not a business.
